Valve **** us Over with In-game Ads loool

Fun fact: Most of the companies advertising in Blade Runner were cursed and suffered greatly after appearing in that movie.

e.g. Atari, Pan Am.

I like 1.6 and Source. I never even notice the ads in BF 2142 so it will likely apply to 1.6 as well.

Even if they make sense? Like having the vending machines in Office give out Coca-Cola bottles?
Well that's un-intrusive advertising (Hell some texture modders have done that anyway for more realism), but something like huge "VAGISIL" adverts in Dust2 covering all the boxes at A would be too much, for instance.

Now that would be shit :P

I'm not worried. I'll be worried when I hear an announcement, but as it stands, I don't see advertising spreading out into the Episodes. Perhaps DM or something, but then so long as it isn't cookie tracker stuff I'm not really fazed. I can handle sub standard advertising in multiplayer games - a few billboards and posters isn't really going to detract from my experience. Though if Valve take it further, I'll be worried.

Be worried. This is big, precedent-setting stuff, and being apathetic just because your gaming experience isn't affected yet isn't a good attitude. The fact that the Episodes likely won't be affected is irrelevant :P

Why is everybody throwing a hissy fit over some ads? It's not like they are going to hinder your playing ability? What's wrong with a company wanting to make some money? I figure the more money Valve puts out, the more quality games we can receive in a more timely manner...You guys are acting like they are DELETING 1.6...

>notepad.exe windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

127.0.0.1 adserver2.valvesoftware.com

etc

What about the Northern Petrol ads in HL2? D: Or hidden terrorist propaganda?

I don't think they will put it in Episode Two for several reason's. Firstly your in an a area where you will not see signs, ads, billboards & other advertisements in a place where there is forests, caves, cabins, plenty of water such as rivers + watersfalls. EP2 isn't a very citified area.

Also Valve would be stupid to implement it in, because of that fact that it would take away "The atmosphere" that made the HL games great, it will remind you that this is just a game.

lol :D

Player 1: "They're at site vag!"
Player 2: ":|"

I doubt Valve would throw in huge ads, I think they will be smallish and not really distracting. They obviously know big ads in the map would annoy people, or well I hope they do...

That's what I think, but I'm all for people just waiting and seeing, and then having something to actually BITCH about then going off saying, "OMFG ITS GOING TO RUIN TEH GAME ITS GOING TO BE HUGE OMBOMOGMOMGOMOG."

When they bring em out, play the game, enjoy it, don't worry...I seriously doubt Valve will put something in there that would cause people to stop playing. And if ads in general make you want to quit a game, get a clue, shit.

I have faith in Valve...

Ads were inevitable, and in fact it can really enhance the environment

For example in a Splinter Cell map, it was held in a theater. On the walls were real movie poster signs. That was good advertising because it fits.

I'm sure Valve won't put in any ads that will screw up the immersion.

Like someone made in that other thread, since people have already made the Coke vending machine skins and such, what's it matter now if it's official?

Ads, hm...

I think they're wrong when the company is making money from it and the community doesn't get anything in return (such as a lower purchase price). However, CS1.6 being technically free (once you have HL, which won't show ads) complicates matters.

Valve seems like a company with integrity, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I would start worrying when they're introduced into CSS which I paid for, or into new games but at standard retail price without an additional benefit for customers.

I don't care about ads in CS 1.6 and stupid l33t cs 1.6 playerz community.
After all Valve still rocks!

It seems obvious theres some friction between the communities.

We must fight to the death!

I dont understand what the big fuss is. THERES IN GAME ADS ALREADY IN THE GAME. From back when it was a mod. They wont change the look of anything. Itll just be there like you treat the old school ads.

you guys live ina dream world.
Valve, just like EA cares about $$$$.
And this proves it.

Yes, because in Lemonking's world game developers can operate without money.

Lemonking is here?

I'm no fan of in-game ads, but at the moment I'm going to stick to cautious awareness instead of mouth-foaming anger.

CS 1.6 is a testing ground. And I vastly prefer static ads to cookie-tracking software. So long as this doesn't eventually lead to the extent of giant Pepsi billboards in City 17 or Ford ads plastered on the walls of dod_caen, I don't mind all that much. Wether or not they intrude on the atmosphere is the key issue for me, and CS doesn't really have a lot to worry about in that department any way.

Ultimately, this is up to the community. If you don't like it, you have two choices. You can either sit on your ass and take it like the majority of BF players do, or you can vocally express your displeasure to Valve (without being a cock). My guess is that there will be a Steam poll at some point collecting user feedback regarding the issue, which means the lazy people won't have to go through the arduous task of typing out an e-mail.

Well seeing as the 1.6 community is full of whiny little kids, the Source community should have no trouble killing all of them.

I really hardly play CS & the only CS I have is CS:S, so I will not be bothered one bit unless it makes it way to the episode's which I don't see happening.

The next episode, Half-Life 2: Episode Two is taking place in an area where there is no urban thing's like billboards, ads, signs, posters..etc. We are going to places where we will explore (example: caves n' forests) there will probably will not be any combine propaganda for a while. We are heading into area where people would vacation or you would tend to see wildlife. Where would you be able to put that? there is no room.

Then as Samon suggested, in Half-Life 2: Episode Three we will be heading to the arctic to see the "Project" that Mossman was working on, there also will not be any billboards there either...just mindless area's of snow & ice. Having in-game Ad's in the Episode's is mindboggling & would get rid of the "Atmosphere" that Half-Life 2 has.

Gotta pay for those content servers somehow...
Besides, it's a good business move. Ad's = income.

At most they will be billboards above the rest of the action, so it's not like you'll ever be hiding behind a Pepsi machine... though that is a good idea...

Bravo team take your levi clad asses and get behind that pepsi machine! Alpha squad, put those Converse All Stars Vintage 2004 to use and set up a flank behind the GMC Denali, sniper team I need you to camp out behind the UPS boxes and keep them from coming through the Masonite Cavalier Mahogany 2 Panel Wood Door! Alright team, go, go, go!!

It bothers me that some people here don't seem to see the bigger picture.

I for one hate CS. I could care less if they just blew up every single server. The problem here is that the current plan sets a dangerous precedent:

1.) Adding ads to games you have already purchased, thereby decreasing their value to you. (And yes, we did purchase CS 1.6. It came in a package with Half-Life, which we all purchased somehow.)

2.) Making it "ok" for a small, respected developer to use in game ads. Sure, everyone knows EA is the evil empire - we expected it from them. But if Valve does it, that's the OK for every studio in the world to open the advertising floodgates.

3.) Making multiplayer games substantially more profitable than singleplayer games, which depend more on a cohesive setting where ads wouldn't be appropriate. The industry is already going this way, and this will just speed it up.

Most of this is moot, of course, if you don't mind the idea of ads in the first place. But personally, I play games to get immersed. I want to forget the real world and all the troubles that go with it for just a few hours. True, it's not so bad in games that are supposed to be realistic, but who knows if that's where they'll stay?

EDIT: And does anyone suspect that EA (Valve's new publisher) is egging them along on this?

Well seeing as the 1.6 community is full of whiny little kids, the Source community should have no trouble killing all of them.

And then when you are weakend from fighting, the 1.5 community will strike and once again take up the matle of the true rulers of CS!

I don't really care about 1.6, but I'm worried about it spreading to other games. Hopefully the outrage will be big enough to discourage them from putting ads in games they are still hoping to be big sellers in the future (I don't think 1.6 sells that much anymore; almost anyone who plays online games has it already).

Please no ads in Left 4 Dead!

Dear god have some faith. VALVe hasn't become EA overnight. I imagine they'll stick with unobtrusive stuff like vending machines and replacing fake billboard ads with real billboard ads. Maybe generic cars with real world cars, and so on. Even in the SP it wouldn't be so unbelievable for many things.

I don't see what people are so worried about. It's not like they're going to replace the sound files with crap like "Affirmative - DRINK COKE!" or "Storm the front... with Dominos Pizza!"

It'll be non-intrusive, and there's already product placement in games.

Actually that would be funnier than annoying (but lets not experiment to find out)

It'd be amusing for a day as satire or whatever but not if you really wanted to play some CS
