Valve might have their hands tied. I'm sure they want to release the game. Its a lotl about $$$ though. With the FX cards not being able to play it, their going to lose out most probably. Plus they might have just found a part of the game that there not happy with. I mean would you release a game after 5 years work if it doesnt live up to your expectations 100% ? Their not going to get a second chance here. How many people have worked on a 5 year project, they eat, sleep and breath HL 2 they just wabt to make sure its perfect.

yea i posted a thread just like this called "correct me if i am wrong...but.."

yea man it is true i don't mind waiting a couple more weeks. i hope it is weeks we are talking about though.

annoying that valve told us 6days before release :(

STFU leave me and my denial in peace!!! :flame:

They'd make more money selling now than during the holidays... You sell now, you have all the time leading up to the holidays, the game creating a tremendous amount of sales.

Holiday time comes around, people are STILL buying it, in a great large amount for the kids and stuff that can't buy it when it was released.

If you just released it during the holidays, you'd have fewer net profit gain easily, as a couple weeks of sales cant match a couple months of sales including that very same holiday.

^ exactly, they need time to optimize water effects specifically, as spitcodfry stated, and im sure they want to make sure it runs smoothe and perfect, with a game this big they cant release it before its done. if valve had wanted to they could have rleeased it on the 30th as they wanted to. its not about money a single bit, perhaps for vivendi, but not for valve.

The reason it's delayed is its not finished, simple.

Then why were they literally wasting their time by doing all that benchmark crap? they should have stayed locked in their offices without outside contact until it was done. :E

They should just come clean and tell us exactly what the problem(s) is.

Them NOT telling us what is causing the hold up has a lot to do with making some of us -(like myself)- angry.

Leaving us to speculate what is causing the delay is only adding fuel to the fire.

This is what is frustrating me too, it's all the silence that is driving the community insane. Now that there's a delay, why can't they at least clarify on what needs to be done? They don't need to give us another date, obviously they don't know themselves, but at least they could say 'we're just optimising X' or 'level Y had some problems' or 'the physics aren't working for Z'. They could do that without giving any of the game away, and people would be satisfied that there is a real reason for the delay; nobody wants the game released unfinished.

the problem is vivendi. they want to make more money so they delayed it to the holidays. valve wanted it released on sept 30th but vivendi said no. valve and vivendi were obviously arguing for a while and valve never gave up till the last minute. if anything everyone should be pissed at vivendi not valve, valve fought for you guys :p

Many people say it is fake because so many others have come out already!

And you know this how? There's a post in the 'info from valve' thread with a dev saying 'it's not done'. Why would Valve want it released if it's not done?

I hear that...if they announced it on the supposed release date...I'd be rather pissed...:x

nah

I sincerely doubt it man. Why in the world would they wait till the holidays? They can make money now and that is what matters.

There's a very good possibility that Valve hoped to release it the 30th (or at least have it gold by then) right up until this last week. They finally realized that whatever it is that has caused the delay, could not be overcome in time and sent out the emails. I don't think it's a case of "well, we know months ago but didn't want to say anything".

there's also an email from gabe at gamershell.com saying it's gone gold.

look, valve wouldn't just say "holiday 2003" after saying it'll be released on the 30th just one month ago. vivendi just wants money and that was pretty obvious when they said holiday 2003 back in july. for valve to say the same means that they have finally just gone along with vivendi but for them to be disagreeing with vivendi for so long means that they were trying to get it out on the 30th for the fans, not for the money.

I think if that gold thing at gamershell is fake then their site should be destroyed.

Really why the hell post FAKE stufF?

Anyone know if Gamer's Hell has a previous reputation of farces such as this?

Of course, the most likely culprit would be h4><0rz.

The post in the valve thread is a link to an image from a conversation on Steam, a lot harder to forge than an email from Gabe. Possible, yes, but who'd go to that trouble when it doesn't even give that much info?

I want it to come out on the 30th as much as you do, and I'm still holding a glimmer of hope that this is all a big hoax, but it's looking doubtful. Last night when there was just the single email from Doug, there was good evidence it could be fake. I woke up this morning to confirmations coming left, right and centre though, so I'm pretty convinced. Let's just hope they get it done quickly and get it out in October. Halloween is still a holiday, right? :)

Well no shit it's delayed but the reason why is because of Vivendi. And a conversation on Steam is so much easier to fake than an email from gabe. all you have to do is go into the friends click on options and click on edit profiles than change your nickname to "Greg" and you're done. I can't believe people actually believed that steam thing

I'd like to think that they could get it out within a few weeks, at the least via Steam.

Otherwise we can look forward to posters of the G-Man in a Santa's hat decorating electronics stores in anticipation for the release. Wow, I just can't wait. [/sarcasm]

Perhaps so. And yes, it's quite possible Vivendi is a large part of the reason for the delay. Perhaps they're using the now inevitable delay to fix things that they were going to leave for a later patch though. I have no reason to believe the Steam messages are fake (I believe there was one from Erik Johnson as well).

I sincerely hope this game doesn't take too much longer to get into my grubby little hands (or HDD, since I'll be buying from Steam most likely), I'm as disappointed as everybody else. I just hope there was a good reason for this delay, and not just marketing bullsh*t. I would've thought Valve would have more clout than that in regards to the marketing of their own game, since most (all?) of it was self funded anyway.

valve said so themselves, vivendi decides when the game is released, not valve.

I was under the impression that only applied to the store release though? Don't Valve have control over the Steam release? Yes, it's been said that they're meant to be out at the same time, but it just seems strange that Valve would leave themselves open to this sort of move if it's completely against their will.

Yes as the publishers actually buy the rights to publish the game from the makers, they have the say on release (when its complete)

I remember seing the thing about DukeNukem Forver and that the publisher paid millions of pounds for the rights.

they tried, you can't blame them. they really felt like they could make vivendi release it on that day. oh well :p i think it's a breach of contract or something if they sell it through steam before it's been released in stores. who knows, there's so much crap we haven't been told it's not even funny.

Hehe, sucks to be them.

Anyway, you may be right saying that Vivendi have complete control over release dates, even Steam; it just seems a bad move by Valve to have agreed to this. I guess most of their sales will come from the stores though, so they may not have had a choice. Ah well.

*waits patiently for more news*

I agree I dont think after paying millions of squids that the publishers would let it get released on steam first.

Especially when the idea of steam is to take money from the publishers.

Its not a bad move bye valve agreeing to this, they have to agree unless they dont want the publisher and release it themselves via steam.

But honestly if it was steam only how many people would download iT?

The only thing I blame Valve for is keeping all it's fans in the dark for so long, and leading them on to believe Sep 30th was almost a certainty. I know they're busy with the game and all, obviously, but they could've been a bit more forthcoming.

Damn evil publishing companies.

*keeps waiting*
