Will you be able to stand on a vehicle that someone else is driving and not "slide" off?

E.g. If you have a truck, people could jump on and stand on the platform and shoot at other people, while the truck is moving. (Like in Joint Ops, really good game btw ;))

Or do you need a "place" for everyone? (Like in OFP)

ehm.. HL² wont have MP (exept for CS:S - but that "mod" doesnt have vehicles), so nope :D

You don't think anyone will mod it??

I remember this comming up over a year ago but I cant remember the answer :( I think it should be in the Valve info thread though. I also think that it should be fine tho as they actually have proper vehicle code no unlike hl1.

Well how are we supposed to know? Its up to the modder.

erm cs does have vehicals, 1.6 did anyway

They said they might add like new game mods for css that use big maps and vehicles/planes. I think it was cliffe who said it in a interview.

Why would anyone believe that cs:s is hl2 mp it will obiously have its own mp thats just stupid :flame: . and back to the Q, well everything is physically simulated so it should act like what would happen in real life if u are ontop of a vehicle!

I really want HLDM.... ;(
It wouldn't be as easy to run over someone with a vehicle in HLDM, not when everyone has a Manipulator :E

It confirmed CS:S is only Mp shipping with HL2. I dont mind that I love cs. They will probably later on make some more stuff. And so many mods to look into.

Like switch said, this actually has been brought up in the Valve Info thread. They said that it's always an option to the modder, but the default physics settings will allow people to ride on vehicles (without set 'seats'), and the faster the vehicle moves, the easier it is to fall off of/out of. However if you're just riding on top of a car or buggy, and it turns hard, you'll slip sideways and probably slide off, unless your character is moving slowly the other direction.

I'm sure this can also be modded so that whenever you're touching a vehicle, it's as if your character is actually holding on to it, so you can stand in the door of a dropship and not fall out when your side tilts downward, like Joint Ops.

So centripetal force is not modeled? Would be awesome if it was..

A bigger question is 'Do vehicles WORK in multiplayer?'

'Work' as in can you actually drive them, or do they really belong in multiplayer, or what exactly are you asking? It's pretty clear that they'll be moddable, because we already know they exist in singleplayer.

Yes you can drive them in multiplayer, yes it's possible for a modder to make them invincible or susceptible to damage.

(Don't remember the name... something cheesy... anyone?) is a fun MP game with vehicles. You can man different "stations" in the vehicles and shoot from them with you own weapon, you can even "man" a enemy vehicle and shoot the other guys, this is the kind of gameplay that I would like to see in HLDM². I remember one map which consisted largely of a multy story car park... that was fun :)

Well since the player is a physical object too, so when you're standing on top of a vehicle, you inherit its momentum. So when a vehicle instantly stops, you fly off because you still have the momentum of the vehicle.

No???

Hehe ;)

Well, centripetal force is calculated to some extent. Like I said, if you're just standing on top of a vehic and it turns hard, you'll slide off the side. I take it your question is based on my comment about walking the other direction to avoid falling off, right? I mean, in real life you'd fly off the car no matter how fast you moved the other direction. Not so, by default, in HL2.

However, like I mentioned before, it's easy to change the physics model so that whenever someone is riding on a vehicle, they're holding on to it, and thus won't fall off, even if affected by centripetal force. For example, it would be as if someone riding on the buggy was bracing themselves between the bars on either side.

the thing is, valve said there would be vehicles in MP (just not air vehicles)
wtf happened to that?

they didnt want their own MP component competing with TF2 or something I bet.

I am so pissed about CS:S being the multiplayer component ("Something we did to test how easy it was to port something over with our tools, was porting CS into source...") sloppy seconds if you ask me.

Yeah, exactly. So if you're on top a buggy and it slams into a 4-foot-high wall, the vehicle will stop instantly and you'll keep moving the same speed forward. My understanding is that by default, Source will function in this way. You could easily mod it, however, to keep the player inside/on top the vehicle no matter its velocity or speed.

The force of which you speak is not a special force, by any means that it would need to be specially programmed in. It's just the force nececary to keep an object going in a circular path. In this case it would be provided by friction between the player and the car. The car turns and the player standing on the car tends to want to keep going in the original direction. If the turn is slow enough, and the player massive enough, the frictional force may be enough to keep him on top of the car. If the turn is too fast, however, the player will likely sail off the car.

I have no idea if at that point they knew CS:S would be the only MP, but we still don't know what surprises are included in CS:S. I suspect a few levels will involve driveable tanks or APCs, for one team or the other. It would be easy to add, and if vehics aren't included in the official levels, you can bet it'll be modded into one of them, or a new, more appropriate level, within days.

Actually I meant the thing about not falling out of a chopper when it's turning... or if you stand on a vehicle driving in a velodrome you wouldn't need to change anything if the centripetal force was modeled.
But when the vehicle is not tilting in the turn "holding on" by walking is fine by me :)

That would be hilarious if they actually did make HL2DM, found it much better than TF2, and shitcanned it so people would buy TF2.

Watching from a fixed point though, wouldn't the car sail away from the player? ;)

Anyway... so you're saying that if you stand on a car which is making a hard heavily banked turn, the player wouldn't fall off? Coool :E

what about when they were having that discussion about Gabe welding propane tanks or something onto (I forget who's.. coulda been rick) Rick's jeep and then sending him to space?

hey maybe there is coop.. that would be impressive. (non-sven coop)

So... If Halflife Source is the same good ol' Halflife on the new engine, does that mean we get HLDM when HL:S is released?

Here's hoping.

CS had vehicles so I'm sure CSS will at some point.

Space... hmm... I wonder if it's possible to simulate realistic space environments with Source. When you're floating around, would it work to fire a gun or throw something to gain momentum? Moonraker fight!! :sniper:

Please don't say CSS which stands for Cascading Style Sheets... say CS:S... Please :)

cs had vehicles on official maps....oh the days of the apc.....

and there are tons of custom maps with vehicles...unfortunately they're all shitty

i wanted to use the gravity gun so badly im multiplayer. to bad :(

Ever heard of the "Armed Forces" Mod, They Obviously feel confident they will be able to implement Tanks, Humvees, And I think Even Helicopters... !! Can't wait for that mod..

Sounds real good, except for the helicopters... never feels right to fly when you have walls and roof on the map.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Valve was working towards putting vehicles in CSS

u can put vehicles in cs :s maps yes this is the case with HL:CS too. They wont add them to league maps like dust2 , nuke, inferno etc but loads of custom maps will come out with vehicles. People have already made flying vehicles with the stolen build.

Yellonet, i would say 2005 is a good bet for CS2 yes.
