would it be legal for someone to purchase a domain that was televised to, and recommended to, millions of people and redirect it to someone's website without their permission? I can't even reach GeorgeSoros.com right now. If they didn't have his approval, they're gonna be sued for putting his website through so much bandwidth and hits.

I didn't ask if the government should force him to change the redirect, I asked if it would be the "right" thing to do, because, hey, he wants the truth to come out so we would know to vote Kerry, right? And what way better than a non-partisan website like FactCheck.org?

well, that's an excessively pollyanna-esque stance. should soros be held to a higher standard than any other political pundit? as far as your first question, "would it be legal for someone to purchase a domain that was televised to, and recommended to, millions of people and redirect it to someone's website without their permission?" i honestly don't know whether that is legal or not. at quick glance, i see nothing obviously illegal about it. it all depends on the nature of the buying agreement i suppose.

perhaps I should explain from the vantage point of run/rent/owning two servers myself.

Let's say I put out a link in my portal for a high demand download which is encrypted so that I can limit traffic to my server. Then let's say that someone posts a direct link to that file on another site. My servers get HAMMERED. I go over my limits on bandwidth. My websites are not available due to the excessive traffic. I end up shutting down my servers and all my websites before the end of the month and then have to pay an overage charge for the extra bandwidth which was in effect stolen from me. I'm seriously ready to rip into somebody.

See my point? They are losing uptime because of extra traffic. Is it their fault? If not, who to sue?

The WHOIS should be tale tell when the DNS updates to reflect the changes.

i already understand the view-point of the webmaster on the receiving end, but my question is whether it is legal or not.

I still can't believe Cheney voted against Head Start, Meals on Wheels and the MLK Jr Holiday. They gotta go!
