I got a question! Did u.s. go into vietnam to stop the north vietnamese communist spread? If so what is the current situation?

:dozey: Yes, the U.S. went into Vietnam to "contain" communism so it wouldn't spread, for it to stay just in that area that has already been infected with communism, this containment program started when the U.S. thought Russia was trying to take over the world. The current situation with the U.S. and Vietnam, well... if the U.S. pulled out of Vietnam; losing the war, what do you think? The U.S. isn't ****in with it anymore!

Yep. They went there to stop the spread of communism in Southeast Asia. We had to pull out before we could finish the job, and the soldiers were greeted at home by hippies who called the baby killers and other insulting things. Had we stayed, we would have lost more guys. China and North Korea are the major powers that are communist and have nuclear weapons.

umm.. maybe a google search of vietnam history would help a bit more. Luckily I just wrote IB exams on world history which includes the Cold War. Basically what happened was that after WWII, the Japanese left Vietnam. The French had Vietnam as a colony before and they came back, but the Vietminh lead by Ho Chi Minh weren't too happy. They fought a long geurilla war and the French left the North to the Communist Ho Chi Minh. Then the Cold War started and Vietnam was split essentially into North and South, capitalist, communist, with the plan to hold elections to bring the two together. However it looked like the Commies would win, and the American puppet, Diem was a real asshole, so they never had elections. Eventually everyone hates Diem, and the North are taking over. So to prevent communism from spreading, the US starts sending "advisors" and pilots and stuff, but eventually they commit a lot of troops and essentially fight the same geurilla war that the French already lost. Eventually the Americans leave in 73, and the Socialists run the country and things are pretty happy, except for a couple more wars with the neighbours and that stuff. But now with the Cold War over and all, it's kinda going mainstream I think.

well i don't think they're really communist anymore. I think it kinda faded away or into a more moderate socialism atleast like in China. Only Cuba and South Korea are hardcore commies still.

Yeah... had to do quite a few essays on this recently.. Dan had it pretty much on...

After we had "advisors" over there, a north vietnamise gunboat fired on one our our ships in the gulf of tonkin. Later the captian reported being fired on again, htough that wasn't completly true. Presidient Johnson went before Congress and got the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that allowe dhim to use all nessacary force to stop N.Vietnam. (This was later replaced by the War Powers Act....nixon era)

We initially got invloved in vietnam as part of, as other have said, our policy of containment and the theroy that if one country fell to communism, they all would fall. The otherpart, which was related, was our treaty obligation as part of SEATO.

Anyway, under nixon we started pulling our troops out, south vietnamese weren't opposed to unification, country is communist now.

Dan...you mena North Korea?

Okay so if they are communist. How does it work. Try to be as exact or as specific as possible :D

Havent been out of hell in a couple hundred years, sue me sheeze.

Seriosuly tho I was just wondering. I thought they where just a socialist capitialist mix. I really didnt think there where anymore commies left. You would think after seeing how bad russia went to hell they would learn.

Nobody ever learns, about anything. Anyway...after the Vietnam war (or at least the one we know as the Vietnam war) Vietnam ended up in a massive mess of fighting with the whole of indo-china, Cambodia, Laos etc. I'm not sure if there's still fighting going on but the situation was pretty bad...

When I first saw this thread it sounded like a Vietnam vet asking for help with his post-traumatic stress syndrome or something...

:dozey: During the Vietnam war, Khmer Rouge was trying to turn Cambodia into a communisitic country, killing all who had western influence. So I guess the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia, while it was in such a weak state. I dunno how Viet's had beef with Lao's and China, fill me in.

Clinton normalized relations with Vietnam during his administration. We're all buddy-buddy now.

During the Vietnam war the CIA had been secretly trafficking drugs ina nd out of Laos to get extra money, I think. When 'peace' descended in 1973 it allowed the Americans to concentrate on Cambodia - Pol Pot blamed Hanoi for giving in. In general NVs were racist towards Svs, moving affiliates of the Thieu government into 'reeducation camps' and also picking on Chinese-Vietnamese etc. Meanwhile the Pathet Lao are taking over in Laos. Many Svs fled into China or out to sea.

Meanwhile, the Khmer Rouge take over in 1975 and make a royal cock-up of things, bringing the country to it's knees. Thousands of refugees flee into Vietnam and Thailand meaning these two countries are brought into Cambodian affairs. Border clashes between Vietnam and Cambodia escalate until Hanoi commits troops to an invasion. In 1979 Phnom Penh falls. The Chinese, who support Pol Pot, want to help, but ti is now a clash between two superpowers: the Vietnamese are now officially allied with the Soviets.

The Chinese fear they are being surrounded by the Soviets and threaten the Vietnamese with retalliation. This has no effect and China is forced to invade North Vietnam, before pulling out due to heavy resistance. It was intended to force Vietnam to pull out of Cabodia but it failed and the fighting went on. Thailand is full of refugees from both countries, although doesn't get involved apart from that. Laos didn't geet involved much either, but was part of it since the Vietnamese had their Ho Chi Minh trail going through part of Laos, which I believe they used to combat Cambodia as well, drawing Laos into the conflict though I'm not sure of the part they played. Vietnam is having trouble continuing their occupation and eventually pulls out. Almost immediately, Cambodia launches more attacks. And so it continued...

So yeah, basically, it became a clash between two superpowers before degenerating completely into a brutal melee of warring governments, guerilla factions etc. Does anyone know if it ever ended?
