Vista Beta 2 should become publically released today

Man I'd totally get Vista JUST for the spiffy animations and physics-enabled windows.

Yes, I'm easily entertained.
I'd sit there just jiggling a window for hours... and minimizing everything just to watch it get sucked into the taskbar.

Things get sucked into the taskbar as it's animated, but no jiggly windows like in Ubuntu (?)

I am downloading it. 4 GB and its at 30%. I have downloaded 1.2 GB. I am the winner.

For those that only have 1 hard drive, I would recommend downloading Partition Magic to make it seem like you have 2 HDDs. It is exactly like having 2 HDDs except it just splits the one into how many GBs you want on the second.

On a wireless connection, I am downloading through Firefox and clicked the automatic download link, and it has been getting a constant 170 KB/S. I am surprised. Cannot wait to install this.

I don't know why, but the text hurts my eyes. Its very different looking. Some of it even appears rainbow colored.

Also, does anyone know how to get rid of the security center icon? I don't want a virus scanner nor do I want that malware defender thing.

I give up (for now). I keep getting error message 80070241. I looked it up online and they say when you have SATA and PATA on your motherboard, you have to set it on compatibility mode in bios or installation will fail. I looked everywhere in bios and I have no idea how to do that. I have a Asus K8V SE Deluxe if anyone knows how.

BTW.. I've tried everything. Safe mode this, unattach that. Etc, etc. I think this is the only way to fix it and I'm not sure if I can. :(

Dumb Dude: Check your resolution, make sure your video card drivers are up to date, etc etc

I've noticed the rainbow-ish looking text too, and it's gotten better with every build, so by release I hope that it's gone... It has to do with them using DirectX stuff now I believe.

I'm not in Vista right now, but I just Google'd and in the Security Center window in the bottom area of the screen should be an option that says "Turn off Security Alerts"

If that doesn't work, tell it that you have your own virus scanner that you will monitor yourself.

atomicspark: No idea on that one... Did you unhook the hard drive with XP from the mother board, and so then you only have one hard drive and then try to install (ensuring that the jumpers have it set at the "Master" setting)

I tried all those things with security center, the stupid icon remains. But thats not too much of a bother. I'm getting used to the text, but I can still tell its not like normal. Resoultion and drivers are all ok on my part.

Here is one, only because I'm really lazy.

I unhooked the SATA drive and disabled all SATA/PATA things in my BIOS but it must still be detecting it/bug is still there. I'll try making the other hard drive the master in a bit. Good thinking.

And about that picture... soo pretty. I want it to work. :( How is your guys' experience with using less then the recommended 2 gig of ram? I only have 1 gig but its low latency goodness. I figure I'll be fine maybe a few slow downs when I try to run big programs.

Also, if you're going to upgrade to vista, which edition are you going to buy? Depends on price for me. I expect to get the Ultimate edition of course. ;)

I'm running on 1gb of 2700 DDRram in my laptop. It runs pretty good, except every now and then the desktop will flash black, and once I lost the areo glass effect, causing me to have to reboot for it. I still haven't gotten 100% used to everything, but I'm pretty pleased with the results.

That's just the video card's beta drivers probably. I know when my regular system is loading everything at start up it will flash black quick like a "refresh". Probably when loading catalyst control center or something. :x

Dumb Dude: No sidebar? :(

I love the sidebar, I think it will be great with additional addons. Loving this new beta so far too, it contains usefull programs (this screenshot was in fact taken with a new utility "snipping tool"). I think it will be worth the price when it comes out.

I can get pics of anything you want to see, just ask.

Is there anyone who has WoW and has played it under Vista? I can't seem to get WoW to recognize my widescreen resolutions. The only choices I have are 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1600x1200. My laptop goes up to 1280x800. I have the ATi vista 32-bit drivers installed. Anyone else run into this?

UAC stands for User Assault Core - it's a program inside Vista that is similar to Windows XP Remote Assistance, but instead of helping another user, it punches them in the face for making stupid smart arse internet comments. :dozey:

:) :D

I lol'd

is it worth downloading and installing this?
Can you install it over XP....then unistall if you don't like it?

So has anyone witnessed "Trusted Computing" in Vista Yet? Is it active?
Vista looks soo purty

What is "Trusted Computing" supposed to be? In the task manager there is a "TrustedInstaller.exe" but I have no idea what it is.

tpm, palladium and that isn't really in, there's some 'bits' over it here and there but nothing really, and you also need new hardware with the palladium-related chipsets which aren't really out.

Lol dont do it lawlz.

Seriously, Trusted Computing is where Vista and Macintosh get together and create a huge online database of serial keys for every single file on the internetz. Every mp3 you have will now have a key. If it sees a lot of users with this file... guess what? It wont let you listen to that mp3 anymore.

here here, let me show you a quick 3 minute video about trusted computing.
This video animation is done pretty well http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3980990769014487143&q=

Wikipedia has an article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusted_computing

"Trusted computing encompasses four key technology concepts, of which all are required for a fully trusted system.

1. Secure Input and Output
2. Memory curtaining / Protected execution
3. Sealed storage
4. Remote attestation"
"Users can't change software, Users don't control information they receive, Users don't control their data, and the Loss of Internet anonymity"

Eventually a chip will be in your computer to enable all of these things. Vista alone only has a few features of Trusted Computing without the chip fully implemented.

Still, eventually you will be able to buy your DVD's online and download them. Now, when you finish downloading them it will generate a serial key for that dvd. You can burn the DVD, But ONLY ONCE! You will have to pay MORE money to burn it AGAIN. You cannot put the dvd .avi file or whatever back ON your computer. It wont let you. It will burn the disc, then delete the file from your PC. You can go to someone else's computer and if they have the chip too, you still cant put the dvd file on their computer. Trusted Computing is made for people to believe it will protect you from every single virus and trojan out there and other hamrful files, but it is Also a big movement into anti-piracy and other forms of 'freedom' of the internet.

I trust my computer enough already without having to go through that :P

Holy shit, if that trusted computing thing isn't turnoffable I'm going suicide bomb Microsoft HQ.

It wont be, its basically something out of 1984 =p. They will monitor the files you CREATE and can see the file tracks back directly to your PC. Every time you make a file. The code on it has data that tells you its from you!
What is the Internet now, its totally different. They disguise this by saying "OMG HAXX0r ON YOUR teh PC? OH NOES MY MEGAHURTZ HAVE BEEN STOLEED- We will save you! get this pc chip and Vista/ or the new MAC."

Microsoft and Mac will be working together to create a huge database of all serial codes from files.

This is really good for people that support it, like adobe. I know so many people that have cracked their product. Now it will be virtually impossible for those people.
This software/hardware wont let you play any pirated mp3's you already have and wont let you get new ones.

It wont be turnoffable. This chip will be in your damn Dvd-Players, cell-phones, everything

It puts a dilema on me. Should I get the full Vista? I want DX10 =p.

Microsoft is saying great things to pull you into Vista. Purty OS, Dx10 only on vista, and ZOMG play with xbox360 peepz! They draw you in then ::BANG:: you get hit with a lead pipe and wake up in a bloody cell.

I dunno. If DirectX10 really is revolutionary, I'll get it. Otherwise my XP serves me fine =|

Yea, I really want DX10. Crysis is supposedly using some of it.

ugh, i guess ill try out vista on my second HD =p

I thought you couldn't use any other OS with Vista?

wow, the new public beta is much better than the closed beta I tested several months ago. It runs much better. The copy I had used up 800MB of system memory just sitting there, and I was unable to shutdown, it caused a crash.

you can install it on anothor hard drive and boot with that drive or partition space on a hard drive if you only have a single drive

Meh, Looks like I'll be getting Vista when 85% of the gaming market requires it in order to run them.

Hmm. I have the .Iso. Now what? run Iso emulation - If I install it to a second hd does teh HD need to be formated? I dont want to screw over my PC

Itll be cracked. And if its not microsoft can go **** themselves.

Most likely, untill its a requirement to have that chip on your computer. I burned the .iso.... not what? Boot with the CD in my drive?

It doesn't run as good as it does in XP, but its playable (sacraficing the much needed AA).

This can go to hell.

I've now tried for FOUR DAYS with various different methods to get the piece of shit to install, it won't.

****ing hunk of shit.
