Basically Vivendi is running around pushing alot of it's developer's shipping dates to 2004... not just Valve.

Interplay is dumping them and probably gonna sue for missing back payments. Interplay also vowed to get their games out in Q4 2003, even if they have to do all the distribution THEMSELVES.

If HL2 will in fact be ready for a 2003 release, could Valve afford to distribute it themselves?

Vivendi, what's left of them, is a real mess.

this is old info, but I'm sure Vivendi wont cause trouble for VALVe.

Oh?

I was aware of the Interplay/Vivendi conflict, but I was not aware of them giving conflicting release dates, nor of Interplay's blantant refusal to accept Vivendi's 2004 date.

Wouldn't it be nice if Valve came out and said "F-U Vivendi! We're shipping on Halloween!"

ok - well, I can dream can't I?

that would be great, I don't know how it all works. I don't know who controlls who, well who controlls the release date.

Well, go Interplay.

They're sort of ok though, because they don't specifically just develop games, they also publish too. Valve is just a developer.

So... perhaps it puts into focus the validity of Vivendi's "April 2004" announcement...

Or maybe I'm desperately trying to grab anything that proves it wrong...

Don't hold any hopes on it. Just assume April 2004 and be pleasantly suprised if it surfaces eariler. I'm still wary of it turning into another 'Duke Nukem: Forever'.

I guess Interplay had more of a case against Vivendi then does Valve. Valve getting hacked sort of gives Vivendi more power in their case.

Oh well.

There's no reason for it to turn into a DNF situation. The game is basically done. They're not gonna go switching to the Wolfenstein 3D engine on us. :dozey:

Oh, and if Valve decided to dump Vivendi, I imagine a line would form pretty quick for the right to sell HL2 in stores.

I'm imagining that there no doubt would have been a contract signed for this. Thus why they aren't dropped. I think Valve may be waiting for Vi to do something contract-breaking to be able to get out of it.

Note: I may be full of shit though.

Vivendi really has a big ego. They need to be dropped by Valve so Valve can show them what the **** is really going on.

Own Vivendi, please Valve.

That's why Steam is such a great medium. Not only does Valve get 100% of the money we pay for the game, but they don't have to deal with scum bags like Vivendi dictating release dates and skimping on payments. I mean honestly, what does Vivendi have except for some CD press machines, paper, cardboard, and a couple trucks? Who needs 'em? (other than 56kers?)

Hl2 will be the last game valve will publish with vivendi anyway. DOD was published via activision, remember? Only reason vivendi is publishing hl2 is that its been in development for five years... roughly same amount of time DNF has been in development, just no information has actually been given out since E3 this year, makes all the difference really...
The reason (or so I hear) that hl2 was really delayed from sept 30th, to the holidays (pre hacker) is that the steam wasn't going to be successful at all unless overhauled, and valve want steam to succed, and not unreasonably.
