"VPU Recover" message, help needed

I just got my new computer and it seems to work ok for the most part, except for this one "VPU Recover" problem. The problem is that whenever I play a game (I installed Mafia yesterday, plus the Deus Ex 2 and Far Cry demos) I get a VPU Recover message, saying VPU Recover has (I'll have to try translating from Dutch) reset the graphic accelerator because it no longer responds to commands from the graphics driver...or something along those lines. The game plays alright, and I can play for minutes on end, mostly, but the message appears inevitably after a while.

I've a Radeon card, a 9600XT, and looking at the control panel under the Advanced Options for video, I indeed see a tab there for VPU Recover, whatever it is. The question is, why does this message keep popping up? What does it mean, and most of all, how can I get rid of it and finally get to some gaming on this new machine? VPU Recover also gives me the option of sending the error report to ATI Technologies, which I've done up til now, but I don't know if that'll make any difference.

Just turn VPU recover off, i have a ATI 9500 @ 9700Pro and VPU recover has always been off. Never had any problems.
I use Omega Drivers

I had the same problem with CoD...turned it off and never turned it back on. No problems since.

control panel > display > settings > advanaced > VPU Recover > uncheck enable vpu recover.

Been searching around a little and it seems this is a common problem. In most cases, people apparently assume it's either a heat issue or a case of the PC's power supply being too weak. I don't really think either is the case for me. I do notice however that in a lot of cases people are advised to turn off the VPU Recover feature as it's too sensitive, some say, and to see whether there are really any problems with the hardware. I'll try turning it off and see what comes of it. Anyone else here had this problem?

Well, it looks like I'm officially up shit-creek without a paddle :( I turned off VPU Recover and installed Enemy Territory again, a game I'd been playing on my old pc ever since it came out. And it locked up. It's the same problem as before (only without VPU Recover on now, so I had to reset my machine) : I start a game, all goes fine for a few minutes, and then it suddenly locks up. I tried the Far Cry demo again too and it had the same problem. I'm guessing it'd be the same thing for every game I try. Now what? :(
