Well of course it was quicker on IRC, but nobody had posted it here yet, oh, and a wee bit off topic, i'm loving your xmas avatar

I've always wondered what spielberg would do with a film featuring malevolent aliens after he did ET and Close encounters of the third kind. Therefore i am eagerly anticipating this film!

Sweet. Downloading now.

I hope they have walkers in this one instead of just the recon ships.

Thats of course...if he followed the book or early war of the worlds movies at all. :|

So if he followed the book...we already know the ending. Our bacteria killed the aliens and drove them off.

If he didn't follow the book...well...we will have to wait and see the ending.

Well the voice over was directly quoting the start of H.G. Wells original novel!!!

That doesn't really calm my fears about him ****ing the movie up. :|

Nope...Tom Cruise is in it...not gonna work.
Dont knock cruise. He has made some bad films in the past but when he is good he is very good indeed! Ever seen Collateral?

Collateral is Tom Cruises only really good film. Ever. Then again it had the right script, mood and setting... all the other films have been utterly fictional and you just dont believe it, with exception to the love story films.

The trailer doesnt reveal much :) and Mr Cruise isn't in it. yay.

No striders. ;(

That was the part I wanted to see most.

Unlikely they'll be giving away the Fighting Machines so early.. ten to one the CG hasn't been completed on those anyway..

Besides, Willy Wonka looks way better than this :p

Oh, Tom Cruise is a great actor, I agree with you 100%. It's just...I don't see him doin' very well in a movie base on an H.G. Wells novel.
Besides...that is my default reaction for ANY Tom Cruise movie...in all likelyhood, I'll boycott it, then see it when it comes out on video and love it.

...or maybe I'm right. We may never know...DUM DUM DUM!

I think this has the potential to be awesome.

But Dakota Fanning? Double you tee eff?

What's wrong with Dakota Fanning? I thought she was rather good in the Spielberg TV production "Taken".

The movie has gained my interest. It has the makings of a good action flick, and with the Speilberg touch it could be a modern classic. It'll be interesting to see how Spielberg treats the invaders. I like the movies where the enemies are actually enemies and not our friends/allies in disguise. The less human these invaders are the better.

Hmm the book was good but imagine if the movie was based of Jeff Wayne's musical version of the book.

It's not, don't worry.. There's an animated CG version of Jeff Wayne's Musical being made. The Paramount one isn't connected to it, its more likely to be based on the Radio play version than the H. G. Wells original too.. Though I hope I'm wrong about that last bit.

Waaaaaaaaa? The radio play was the best adaptation/implementation of them all! People actually freaked out and fled their homes because they thought it was real! ...'course I guess it doesn't really translate well to film, that version...

Actually thats a myth, it wasn't _as_ bad as people seem to remember it being. Just a few people lost the plot, history just remembered it as some major thing.

Kinda like how the WOTW TV series seemed to completely forget the film's destruction of most of the world ever happened :p

I didn't say the cities emptied, but people did believe it. Maybe only a couple hundred, or a handful...but how many TV shows have actually made you BELIEVE them? Still impressive in my book.

ghostwatch i think it was called.. BBC ran it one Halloween a few years back.. It was pretty badly made but it scared a LOT of people, a few even killed themselves afterwards, needless to say I think its only ever been shown once since, a lot of people believed it because of its documentry style and that nobody was told it was made up, just that it was a ghost documentry for that night. It was creepy though hehe.

My worst fear is if this movie turns out like all of the other "world is ending" movies where they just show landmarks all blown up. But its directed by speilberg so there is hope. Also another thing I dont want to see in this movie, and thats patriotism, not that its a bad thing, it just makes the movie less interesting i guess.

Thats why im hoping its not based on the radio play.. should be set in the UK and done as Wells intended.

Course thats not really gonna happen cause already its set in the wrong year. I mean, the whole thing about the original story was how these machines were just entirely unstopable for 1890's technology yet felled by an innocent to us bug. The premise doesn't really work in modern day settings and could risk ending up being a snowspeeder vs AT AT type battle, tripping up the FM's.

But, I'll stay confident cause Cruise is one of the few people who actually make films for the right reasons, if it does go wrong, it'll be the studio thats had its hand in it with the whole "oh the audience wants big explosions etc. and make America look like the hero and so on"

Which will just spoil it, like ID4..

I'd be apprehensive if it wasn't Spielberg or Cruise. Spielberg is just a genius, and Cruise has not only had some really good films to his credit, but his recent ones have been some of his best. (Minority Report and Collateral anyone?)
Now if it was Ben Affleck I'd understand the worry.

That trailer really gives me no idea of what the film will be like, it looks like they've taken stock footage, put some special effects in edited it all together and stuck a voice over on top.
I'm interested as to how the film turns out though.

it'll probably be excellent, spielberg's the man and cruise is a good actor.

looks very interesting... i will be interested to see if it is good. speilberg shouldn't let us down...

i may read the book, it's a very interesting concept - i've been interested in it scince i was very young and my dad showed me his record collection, with the big LP of the War of the worlds music, with a huge alien strider type thing decimating earth. man it looked so cool!

Or the last samurai, that was an awesome cruise movie.

I wouldnt be suprised if that is mordenised, ie. the aliens could be stopped by pollution, radiocative decay from bombs, or maybe they could be stopped by something really simple, like in signs (excellent movie) or evolution (head and shoulders!).

Anyway im really excited about this, i love aliens, i love figting which said aliens, steven speilberg, nuff said. I hope it gains the kind of tension Signs does. Yes, im really lookinf foward to this, so much, oh yeh....
SUMMER 2005! WHAT
bah, ah well it will be good in the end
was a movie ever made orgininaly or just the book and radio play?

There's been

the book
the radio play
the 50's movie (paramount)
the jeff wayne musical
the TV series
the PC game based on the Wayne version
the pendragon pictures version (just been done)
a CG version of Jeff Wayne's in the works
And then this one from Paramount again

Taken, yup.
For those who have not seen the series it is kind of like this, imagine finding out HL3 is coming out TOMMOROW. You queue outside for it in the cold before running back to jam it in your cd drive. Then you find out that the combine are from mars and g-man is gordon freeman from the future.
That series built up so much suspence and mystery, only to give the answers you already new and ending it all in spectacular cheesyness, "im just a little girl", just plain terrible.

Wow! I hope it goes away from the lightheartdedness of a musical to something much darker, and it better not end in some sort of family movie ending that involves anything along the lines of "im just a little girl!". The only place where that worked was Signs with a clever intrication with fate.
I hope, if there is to be one, a GOOD game, maybe by C&C developers, they did battle for middle earth nicely!

If its not set in the UK...then I won't watch it.

Ok so i will...but I won't enjoy it! Even the bits I enjoy.

I doubt it very much, and to be honest I dont care. I would prefer to see aliens ransaking New York or LA than London. Aslong as there is aliens- :D
