Warren Spectator doesn't think we'll see HL2 this fall

Not that WS, the creator of Deus Ex 2, is necessarily any more in the know than we are, but this probably isn't a good sign, given that people who are tied into the industry directly (and the marketing end of things) generally have a much better idea about what's going on.

http://www.etoychest.org/interviews/interview_022.html

With so many excellent first-person games coming out this winter season, Doom III and Half-Life 2 chief among them, how are you making sure that Deus Ex: Invisible War stands out as the brightest gem in such a prestigious group?

Sadly, it looks as if neither Doom 3 nor Half Life 2 will be coming out for fall after all, so standing out may not be quite as challenging as it might have been!

HL2 missing a 2003 release would, of course, be great great news for his gaming studio, though obviously not great news for him as a gamer.

It'd be a shame, but if the game needs more time; it needs more time. It didn't do HL1 any harm to get delayed a bit.

I doesn't sound like he is real sure of his statement... and if you ask me it sounds like he is trying to tell everyone to forget those other two games they won't be out this year, so buy ours, ah well nice find none the less...

you have a point, heck all companies are like that.

Then again i loved Deus Ex, i know i am getting Deus Ex 2 and HL 2

but, but i want it now.......now now now now now now now now now now now....all of them!! he does have a point egm. dues ex does seem like it will come out first and prevail above all

laff, 2003 looking more grim each day. if it were to come out in november of december it would have probably been anounced along with CZ, since thats about how long valve will let us know before hand

I have reasons to believe it'll be out within 2 months, but I'm becoming more apathetic each day. But hey, it's just a game. Until then I'll play whatever else I can get my hands on. But we'll never know until then, so until they say something about it being 2004 - I'll scrounge up all the optimism I can find.

It'd be gold by now if it was going to make it's 5th anniversary :(

The original Deus Ex was a big boost to the sagging Ion Storm during the whole "John Romeo is going to make you his bitch" era, hopefully this will put Ion up at the front of the line of game developers again.

hey, if they are reworking the security in hl2, because of ppl that have access to source, id love that, cause i HATE cheaters that are found on hl1/mods, and they dont even have the source code for that!!!
- so yeah, it will help, but if they are only doing the security issues, i think they could just release hl2 single player only, for now, with the ability to upgrade to multiplayer when that is good to go

Well, not quite. It could go GOLD within 2 weeks of the release date. A lot of games do. *thinks of Halo*
And if it misses the anniversary, that doesn't mean it won't be out this year. Cheer up, bucko!

Almost makes me feel jubilant again... hang on....no, just saw a picture of George Bush. Me = 0 Jubilance.

When is the anniversary anyway? 5th November?

Lord God, it's been so long; I'm not sure. I believe it was some time between 15 & Thanksgiving; I can't remember. I'm pretty sure it came out Thanksgiving Week.

-Ghost.

EDIT: Or the week before.

Considering how long a lead time CS:CZ has had since it's "gold" date (which later seemed inaccurate, since they said it was "code complete" but that they were still tweaking gameplay, which isn't quite gold), I doubt HL2 has time to spring on us BEFORE CS:CZ comes out. CS:CZ is their chance to test online sales thru Steam, and they'll want to make that works well before even thinking about releasing HL2. So, if it does come out this year, my bet is that it won't go gold until at least sometime after CS:CZ is released... but that's a pretty small window between then and when they might as well delay it until after Christmas.

yup, the longer it takes to release CS:CZ means the later we will see HL2.. its just the way it is..

Valve need some way of testing out Steam as mentioned above, and CZ will provide that test.. releasing HL2 without knowing what the Steam network could handle is not only bad business but also bad PR.. and we know Valve isn't doing so well these days in the PR department with the whole leak/delay thing.

Ya never know. I just don't see Best Buy hyping it up for nothing. Best Buy is the most accurate about release dates. Best Buy doesn't do many Pre-Sells - which when they do; it's within a month, or so, of release,...usually. And EB Games just put out the PC Gamer ad for Pre-Orders...something's wrong when a company blindly advertises for a tentative release; They must(or should) have some internal inkling about a release date. I don't see them shelling out hundreds of thousands, if not a few million, for ads on game they won't capitalize off any time soon. There are other reasons, but I've gone through that list so many times; it's rediculous. I agree about the whole Steam issue. I think CZ is the test, before the real deal. After all, we're seeing all of these news updates, as forecasted.

EDIT: VALVe could be sitting on the game, adding new stuff until Steam's ready. I, personally, think that's what's been going on; this whole time. If CZ's internet launch is successful, we could be reading Gone GOLD - within a couple of days.

thank god maybe deus ex 2 will get the goty award it really deserves it if its at all like the first

I *think* the anniversary was the 19th. That number just sticks to my mind when I think about it. *shrugs*

That sounds close...could've been the 26th. It was somewhere around late Nov.

I don't think they'd release it Winter 2003....that's what...5 days before Christmas? ;)

Oh and HL1 was released on Nov 11...or 13...something around that.

They could release it as late as the 23rd of December, if they want it out on a tuesday...and if they want to cut it that close.

Of course they are; I was just stating that's the latest they could release, before Christmas. I think we'll se it before then, though.

I don't see how a delay with Half-Life 2 or Doom III would create any kind of increase in how much Deux Ex: Invisible War would stands out. Infact logicaly it would seem as if having the game released at the same time or atleast near the same time as HL2 and Doom III would give it the chance to try and stand out, not surpass them. If HL2 is the greatest FPS ever made, it won't matter how much HL2 is delayed. HL2 will still tower over the competition, hence making that developers statment hold alot less barring. Mind you, he's going to say whatever is needed to make his company sound confident, and get more sales because of that. Even if hes really lieing. I also do not see how his opinion on HL2's release would be better than any of the ones we already heard before. Just because he is in the gamming business too, doesn't mean his company is ran exactly the same as Valve. His guesses would be alot more meaninful if he worked directly with Valve, or perhaps even indirectly as a partner.

"Not that WS, the creator of Deus Ex 2, is necessarily any more in the know than we are, but this probably isn't a good sign"

This is not even a sign, let alone a bad one. A recent event that like the source code being stolen constitutes as a more valid example of a 'bad sign' than some random employee of a completely different companys opinion which is biased in the first place and marked to follow certain rules for publicity sake. Let's be real now..

Let's say all games but one were taken off the market. Sure, game sales in general would drastically decrease. But that one game would sell a lot more than if it weren't alone.

Competition (in this case) is bad for sales. It's simple as that.

And I wouldn't take that quote from Warren too seriously.

too much vocabulary, not enough grammar.

Anyway...
DX2 will be top game if HL2 isnt out at the same time, think about it. HL2 is going to be the dominant game on the market when it comes out and everything else will get minimal notice. A delay gives DX2 a chance to shine for a while.

Too bad DX 2 looks like crap, seriously. The bump-mapping might look nice on characters - but the environment, and weapons, look like utter crap. If VALVe misses this year, the only thing shining will be games like Kill.Swtich, and the possibly reincarnation of Ninja Gaiden. I think Kill.Switch will stick-out this year, even with Hl2's competition...Not that it'll surpass Hl2, just the MGS series gets so much attention; and Kill.Switch is like MGS on steroids, and without the gay-ass bosses.

-Ghost.

Kill.Switch will be an 8/10 type of game. It'll probably sell better than average, but it ain't anything incredible.

DX2 is all about the gameplay. There are pretty good visuals, but everyone's gonna be playing this for the gameplay. That is, assuming Ion Storm can manage to follow-up a Looking Glass Studio title.

I think Kill.Switch will be something a little different. It won't be spectacular, but it'll be a great survival title. The story seems to be intruiging, along with the whole self-healing mechanism...I bet they say it's Nano-Machines. Anyway, I'm not sure it'll be anything great. As far as visuals go, you're right, but you can generally tell how good a game is by how the Dev Team treats the visuals. DX2 looks like a game where they can say "See, we have Bump-mapping, too!"

-Ghost.

If you seriously think how visuals are treated tells you about the game...well I don't know what your glitch is, but there is one.

Original Deus Ex didn't look great either...in comparison to the games out in 2000....but it sacked every other game and beat the sacks to death when it came to story, gameplay, and depth.

But the graphics in DX2 are not bad anyway. It doesn't have the DX9 shaders of HL2, but it's good looking.

The XBOX screenshots the game has suck...

But the PC version look great...higher res textures...

Example 1

Example 2

Example 3

Example 4

I was talking about games in general...I guess I should have defined, sorry. You're right, graphics aren't a basis for analyzing what the gameplay could boast. Perhaps DX2 will be good, I hope so; I'd hate to waste $7.00 renting a crappy game. And DX2 could look a lot different, from the Screenshot that are out. The gun still look like crap, though; you have to admit that...or not. It's your choice.

I admit it, something that you see through out the entire game should look better...

well, perusing around just now i came across THIS
dunno what it means but...ya never know.

just to let you people know. a game company and especially how Valve has been acting they dont need to tell you if it goes Gold. yoour thinking just cause a few game companies tell you the game is ready for mass production they all will...tipical but NO.

This is true; the only reason I don't see it being the case is because VALVe will probably announce it's GOLD, the day after or later...like they did with HL. I know Valve likes to suddenly surprise their customers, so this would be the most likely thing to do. Plus it would kick-start the hype right before the soon release.

CZ isn't a very, if at all, anticipated title; thus there was no reason to wait and surprise.
