Was the nuke in Opposing Force a good idea?

Or was it just a way to cleanup all lingering questions about Black Mesa? I, for one, would've loved to some more survivors of the whole ordeal, and thought it might have been cool to revisit it as a Combine-occupied stronghold (like New Nova Prospekt).

It doesn't make much sense given the state of the world after the Black Mesa incident. Black Mesa itself wouldn't have been much of a problem. But hey, least the Combine can no longer leach of the technology there.

But, I'd hate to go back. Even if it were still there, no way. Anyway, it's a crater now, and just like the whole world, infested with aliens.

Speaking of leeching technology, I initially thought this was the site Judith was talking about until I realized it was nuked at the end of Op4 and she was wearing winter clothes. :rolling:

Also, is it plausible that Eli and Kleiner got out of the blast radius in time? Eli was pretty deep into the facility. I don't questions Barney and Rosenberg, as their escape is about at the time of Apprehension (since you saw Gordon being carried) and the place doesn't blow until long after Gordon defeats Nihilanth (and Shepard defeats the Worm).

Eli and Kleiner weren't that deep. They had like, a day to get out.

and it took freeman a day or two to end up on xen and kill the Xen Ninny Boss thingy :p

Black Mesa was half a world away from City 17. Considering that Eli and Kleiner lived in BM they knew the facility better than Gordon?

I think bmrf was nuked to prevent the combine from acquiring the superior teleport technology. The previously mentioned "technology leeching".

The Combine was attracted to Earth via the energy given off during the resonance cascade and portal storms.

The polticial reasons it was nuked was so, when the UN picked up wind of this happening when they go to investigate, there'll be nothing there. even though now that I think, The HECU are owned by the Goverment and so is the UN. Maybe it was to get rid of the Alien Infestation that was in the BMRF, of course they didn't know about Portal storms. but that was a bit later. after the BMRF Incidient.

I think a nuke was in mind from the moment they gained wind of what was happening. They just, you know, forgot to tell the grunts.

Well they lost contact to forces outside of the BMRF and since the Grunts were unable to fight against most aliens and Freeman. They decided that the Grunts were "expendable."

But this is the one thing that makes OPFOR bad storyline wise. They didn't introduce the Black Op VS Hgrunts thing well.

there are many flaws in the half life story. I look foward to how black mesa source redoes the game. Though I doubt they will fix any flaws in the story. We will just have to accept it as a mystery.

What flaws?

Don't get me wrong, I think there may certainly be some errors since the original was done largely without the sequel in mind. Just wondering what you're talking about.

There are two possible reasons for the nuking of black mesa.

Number one= Government clean-up. Pretty self-explanatory.
Number two= the gman knew of the combine. So he helped the government in nuking the base to prevent the combine from acquiring the lambda teleport technology.

But anyway, this is not a flaw in the plot. The nuking of bm just makes sense, from any possibile point of view.

Although it is a bit of a cheat... And it marks the only point where the G-man truely, directly, inteferes. Well, besides opening doors and teleporting people in and out of places.

It was part of G-Man's job to tie all loose ends. Plus the government thought that leaving BM while aliens roam around freely was NOT a good idea. Thats why they nuked it, but the portal storms continued so that did not take much effect.

Perhaps the g-man did not yet forsee the full extent of the portal storms. Or perhaps he was working for the Combine (please no debates about this) and thought that if the research was salvaged (which it was anyway) it could pose a threat to them.

yeah, also the government sure as hell couldn't foresee the extent of the portal storms, so it makes sense to nuke the site.

But, after hl2, I think the gman knew about the combine prior to the events of hl1. Maybe he didn't know they were after earth, but if he did he could have nuked the base for the reasons I have already stated. Of course I suppose he was an antagonist to them all the time.

I believe it is safe to assume, that G-Man has no love for the Combine, on the contrary, he is opposed to it, unless, of course, he is a mercenary.

The nuking of Black Mesa may have been a move that would remove third party interference, the Race-X, so that the future scenario would be duked out only between humanity and the Combine.

However, if the G-Man indeed is a mercenary... then nuking the facility would have been a measure to at least eliminate the main source of the infestation to minimize it's effects, for reasons unknown (employers' wishes?)

Xen wildlife roams freely around the world. How come there is a guarantee that all Race X were eliminated in the nuke?

I'm assuming that Race-X was performing a military incursion into the facility, a scout party of sorts. The shock troopers seem to confirm this. Also, their teleportation seems to be more precise, at least less random than Xen wildlife.

Also, you stated that it was the wildlife that roams and was teleported in by the portal storms. Wildlife = random teleportation, military = planned teleportation.

The absence of Race-X in further installments may very well mean that they've given up any further effort on conquering Earth, seeing as their scout force was wiped out by the nuke.

Good point. But they COULD return.

They just hoped to close the gate.
Typical for US gov, just bomb the problem. :>

Valve confirmed they will not be continued at any point. So no, they can't.
Valve said that they themselves will not be covering any more futher escapades of Race X, but that Gearbox could should they ever find themselves in the position of dealing with the Half-Life story again. Here's to Gearbox for Episode 4.

Anyway, I don't see why Race X would have a reason to come back. They wanted Earth's natural resources, and now that the Combine seem to have ruined much of them, there's nothing for Race X to try and take again.

I don't really see Race X fitting in the storyline anytime soon so I doubt they'll return. They were fun to fight, but wouldn't make much sense to bring back plotwise.

Wait, Valve said that Race X was never going to return? Can I have the source please, so I can rub it on Race X fans.

Well, if you're gonna act like that, of course not. :rolling:

Just joshin' ya. The relevant e-mail from Marc Laidlaw is here: http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showpost.php?p=1668159&postcount=15

The relevant quote is here:
Race-X was Gearbox's creation, and likely would only be continued if Gearbox were to do more episodes in the HL universe.
So as you can see, Laidlaw says that Race X is likely not to be continued, not "never". This leaves the door open for Race X should they, for some totally inexplicable reason, decide to return to the story. I guess your fantastical dream of Race X absolutely never coming back will simply have to remain a fantastical dream.

Thanks Omega.

"likely not to be continued" is a polite way of saying "never" :p
