Of course. Any TV channel that's going to run something like this is going to do it because they want better ratings, and better ratings means more money from advertizers. What better way to get good ratings than to award to highest sales figures?
Also keep in mind, all of the brand-loyal console gamers that have never tried anything on any other system other than the PS2/Xbox/whatever and don't plan to ever try, simply because "I want to go home and shoot hookers on GTA3", they're the ones who generate the most money.
There's really no point in worrying about this.
