Hey guys... my company, Gratis Internet, is hiring a couple web application developers. The job description is here: http://www.gratisinternet.com/Careers/Openings.aspx?JobID=5.

As the job description says, we're looking for both junior and senior developers. We're primarily an ASP.NET shop, but if you're steeped in another OO language (Java, C++, Ruby, Python, etc) and can learn quickly, that's just as good.

While the company itself is located in Washington, DC, we've had great success having our developers work remotely, which is what I've been doing for the past 2 years. I currently work from home in Shreveport, LA. Additionally, we've just hired another employee in Shreveport, LA, have also had employees in Austin, TX, Boulder, CO and are currently working with a contractor in the UK as well. We use a combination of Microsoft's Office Communications Server, webcams/microphones, VOIP and IM to keep in touch. Unless of course you are willing to relocate to the Washington, DC/Northern VA area, you would be working from your home, with the exception of visiting the main office for 4 weeks out of the year.

I'd also like to comment on one particular perk that isn't mentioned in the job description - our IT team is simply outstanding. Where some companies might skimp on what might be called "supporting" roles, we have a full time DBA, with an ex-Microsoft DBA (one of the guys that fly around the world fixing SQL Server for fortune 500 companies) working part time/on call. We have two full-time network operations gurus ensuring that our production servers and internal network are running in top-notch shape. Finally, we also have a QA department with one full time tester and several interns that test all our applications before release.

In addition to the bodies, we have a working atmosphere that is very conducive to being productive and staying sane. Our interview and hiring process requires that everyone on the team spends a little time with prospective employees, which ensures that everyone gets along. Nobody is required to work extra hours - most of us work a normal day (9am to 6pm), and those of us that work longer do so by choice. We use source control and product management tools (SourceGear Vault and Fog Creek's FogBugz, respectively). The software we develop are the products that the rest of our company uses to make money. In other words, our clients are our coworkers. This means we do the engineering and determine reasonable due dates for projects. This also means that you'll have a fair amount of ownership in whatever you're working on.

Another note - We're a US company, but as I noted above, we've done contracting with a guy in the UK, so this is open to anyone as long as you can speak English fluently and clearly. However, if you're in a completely different timezone (ie, Europe, Asia, Australia, etc), it would be best if you were more "senior" as it would be fairly hard to mentor someone if the working hours don't cross.

If you're interested, shoot me a PM or reply here and I should be able to help get you an interview quickly.

Damn... I really wish I was more advanced in my C# and ASP.NET! ARGH.

lol. I'm way underqualified. I'll take free money though for zero work.

Heh, define "way"...

Way, as in... I've been learning C# and ASP.NET for a while now, but I can't realistically consider myself anything other than a beginner. :( Not enough time to focus on it... as I'm concentrating on my most important goal. My programming has to be on the back burner. One of these days though... one of these days.

I can program polyphonic synthesizers & playback sequencers in C, WHEN DO I START EH!?

I'm fluent in C#, know a little C++, and a fair amount of PHP.

Pssh..gotta use the abbacus to figure out how these boxes really work. Do you think its easy posting here on an abbacus?

It is. :(

Lol unintentional advertising. :P

Edit - Hah, censored. It's a site about devices which play mp3s which are also for free.

Yeah, we're focusing more on straight up advertising now. More b2b than b2c.

Anyways, if you want to get to play with and develop websites that serve at peak over 1000 requests/sec, let me know :P

Well, are you interested?
-No college degree (I'm just getting out of high school).
-No past work (all my work is on my old computer that I gave away for free to my cousin. Not that it's hard to whip something up)
-Don't really know what kind of programs I'd be designing.

I had someone in mind who might be interested, but they're over here in NZ and would probably need to be shown the ropes. They have experience with a couple of somewhat lesser-used languages and are having a real bitch of a time finding programming work, as it were (not to mention NZ isn't exactly a haven for this sort of thing). :(

Man, I keep thinking it's a Dutch company because "Gratis Internet" means "Free Internet" here, and it confuses the hell out of me :|

@Bad^Hat - what time zone is NZ in? See if you can get your friend to send me their resume: daniel (at) gratisinternet (dot) com.

@Beerdude - "Gratis" means "free" in several languages ;) And I'm pretty sure that was the intention.
