Got my ASVAB scores back on Friday, and got the chance to reserve a job (MOS - Military Occupational Specialty). I didn't quite get an MP job, but I still have to confirm my reservation on Monday.

As for now though, I have a job as an Armor Crewmember. Moreover, I'd be getting to either drive an M1A1 Abrams or fire the cannon from it. My date to leave for basic is in March, and I'll be heading to Kentucky for it. So begins the last stages of my pre-enlistment ordeal.

Cool. Although in my armchair-expertise I would say gunner has a more interesting job.

Absolutely, it just depends on how I do during the skill training. If I turn out to be more proficient working the gun, I'll probably be seated there.

How about UAV-operator? The Army likes gamers for that I've read. Also, it is a lot safer.

Bring your own helmet. Soviet tank crew helmets FTW

I don't have much of an interest in UAV/robotic tech. Always wanted to do something that would put me on the Frontlines.

I imagine being a Tank crewman would be pretty cool. At least, for the first 20 mins or so before the cramped quarters get on my nerves.

Is there anywhere that we're even using tanks though? Seems like it'll probably be just years of training exercises and then you leave.

There are still a ton of armored divisions over in Afghanistan that do provide fire support before an assault. Basically, just blow up everything before the Infantry go in.

Cool. Seriously cool. I want to go Armored or MP myself, when the time comes for me. Of course, I'm trying to go officer, so it's going to take time, but Tank Commander ftw.

Also, I think you'll be thankfully safe with tanks; nothing the 'terrorists' have is going to be able to punch to M1A1/2 armor. :p

What do Korean tanks look like? Are they made by Kia? I'd assume if that was the case they'd be made of plastic.

I tried to join the air force recently, but they denied my request for a medical waiver, since I "had asthma" after age 13. Even though I haven't had to use an inhaler in years, and I had two letters of recommendation from a colonel and a lt. colonel, as well as a letter from my doc saying that he thinks that I'm fit for service.

Just out of curiousity, what did you get on your asvab?

No, Hyundai Precision Industries. Self-propelled arties are Samsung, btw.

Have some pics:

Those are K1A1s, kinda look like M1s, don't they?

Uh, I think they've got some stuff for that...

EDIT: I removed a gif, probably not the most well thought out post I've made.

I'm going to college, then joining the Air Force as a commissioned officer.

That's pretty cool. It must be nice not being restricted to MOSs which aren't "closed to women", which is many of the interesting ones. It sounds more fun than sitting around decoding Chinese babble all day. I hope it's not too cold for you in basic.

I assure you, dealing with UAV's can put you on the frontline. I'm actively seeking a civilian job working on UAV's and have learned a great deal about them.

Knox.

All I have to do is sign a form on Wednesday. My reservation is confirmed. My only other option would have been Infantry at this point.

In that case: tanks ftw! multiple inches of steel > kevlar

most canadians killed in afghanistan are killed while they're in transport. shrapnel bouncing around in a metal box tends to make mincemeat of it's occupants

good luck with soldiering!

I hope so. The closer you can get to the civilians you fire missiles at, the better.

dick.

Anyways good luck man it's a shame all this blood and sweat will be wasted a few years down the road.

You do know that lighter weight UAV's are often used for Recon?

Sucks man, the military wouldn't take me since I had asthma seven years ago and haven't seen it since.

rejoice. your humanity is preserved for now

I can't work for the government since I have 1 drug charge 10 years ago.

yes ... I know lots of things

obviously I dont live where you do (USA) but in canada you're eligible for a pardon pretty much as soon as you serve out your sentence for minor offences and up to 5 years after serving your sentence for more serious offences

so obviously check the law in your neck of the woods
