whit church and all
and the church will be decorate whit pics of famous atheists

Indeed, democracy is SUCH a shitty system, can't believe we're actually trying to introduce it into other countries and then pretend it's something good. Granted, the political system of those countries is even worse.

I refuse to believe we can't come up with something better. Let the people vote? I wouldn't even let the people vote on what I should have for dinner, let alone who gets to run the country! Democracy is good in principle, retarded in practice because the majority of the people is retarded.

Why do you let the people decide about stuff they have no knowledge of? And everyone is guilty of that, why does the government allow me to make a decision about where to head with the country in terms of the economy when I know FUCK all about economics?

How about a system where a select group of people who've proven their worth get to vote? Let economists vote about the economy, scientists about eductation etc. A system of knowledge rather than lack of. For example, get two groups of three established economists; have each group reach a unanimous decision about what plans to execute for the economy seperately from the other group, then have the two groups reach a unanimous decision together.

Can't be any worse than this right?
 
That sounds like an Elitist society where only the few have the power to do anything, and to do whatever they want... while the people they govern over are powerless.

I could see a female president and a black president being elected in the near future in America. But a non-christian prez? Not gonna happen.

Truth.

Besides, in my mind it's frankly the only justifiable way to run a government (with consent of the people).

Of course, whether current 'democratic' systems are actually democratic, and whether their results actually constitute 'the people's consent - well, that's a different matter.
 
I'm not entirely sold that this is true. Granted I don't go around screaming that I'm an atheist, but I'm not bashful about it either. I live on a college campus and the people I hang out with outside of college aren't the type to care, so I guess I'm a bit sheltered in that regard ... but I don't see it ever being a big problem. If I lived in the south or wherever then yeah, but most people really don't give a shit.

The only time I've seen religious people get pissed at atheists is either a)they're extremists or b)the atheist wouldn't leave them alone and shut the **** up. I hate it when people try and push their beliefs, or lack thereof, off on other people.

Regardless, I wouldn't consider myself an oppressed minority. I might have a hard time getting elected, but really pretty much anyone who isn't a WASP has a hard time getting elected, I'm not special in that regard.
 
As somebody who has received threats of physical injury and even death, been subject to unsuccessful conversions, been ostracized from certain people, and been called anything from "lost" to "ignorant" to "evil" on a relatively often basis, I'm most inclined to believe this to be true.

This isn't about if the majority of the US population cares. It's about how, in comparison to every other group that exists, we are the most discriminated against. Even if it's not something you experience on a daily basis, there's no denying the prejudice is at least considered acceptable. Paula Zahn, anybody? Or how about the declaration that atheists aren't true Americans by Papa Bush? There's this pervasive notion that atheism isn't really a legitimate view, and even if you aren't outright attacking it, it's not so bad if other people do.

I have no doubt that this is less of an issue further north, but it still exists. Scott, I'm surprised that you would recognize your inability to get elected to a government position and still think you're not getting the short end of the stick along with dozens of other minority groups. I don't understand why people are so complacent over that kind of state-ingrained bias. Calling a spade a spade, addressing prejudice against you, and criticizing religion as the wasteful heap of idiocy it is isn't extremism. It's a dose of much-needed reality.

Extremist atheists are probably in the same league with extremist procrastinators or something equally benign.

When I was referring to the "extremists" I meant religious fundamentalists, not atheists. I agree that an "extremist atheist" is a bit of an oxymoron. Still, there are plenty of atheists who do go around trying to convert everyone to their way of thinking. I hate that. If someone wants to have an honest debate with me then great, I love that - but I don't want to force feed my opinions down other peoples throats and I can't ****ing stand when people try to do that to me. Let people believe whatever stupid shit they want to, the only time I care is when it becomes law and infringes on my rights.

I have also been told that I'm lost, going to hell, stupid, crazy, etc. I've had people try and convert me as well. I agree that we are a discriminated against minority, but definitely not the most discriminated minority. But like I said that is mostly by people whom I would identify as extremists. Gays, blacks, Mexicans and Arabs all have it worse than we do.

As far as my inability to be elected to public office, I'm not complacent. It pisses me off. But I was referring to our standing relative to other minorities. It's really no different than any other group.

I find it very, very hard to believe that I face as much prejudice on a daily basis as the average gay or Arab person.
 
I usually don't receive too much flak for being an atheist, but the people I hang out with don't care for various reasons. There was a time when I thought that religion was a harmless mental crutch for people, but the more I see it cause harm/damage/war/prejudice, the more I think it's a social ill.
 
My Grandma knows that I "dont believe"
She doesn't really care though.
