They both have freakish bug-eyes surely? But whoever said that the above images are an unfair comparrison is entirely right. You've got a horridly pixelated picture pulled from hell-knows where versus a hi-res image which is clearly from promotional materials. Whilst Azumanga did a pretty good job in having well chosen colours and detailed drawings (and on another point it has the advantage of several years youth over Dexter's Lab), it also reminds me of lengthy static shots where nothing happens and of generally choppy animation. That's the general rule with the whole American Vs Japanese debate though. Compare something like Aladdin to Porco Rosso (both made in the same year IIRC, and by the Western and Eastern powerhouses of Animation) and you'll see that the former hasn't an 8th of the detail of the later, but it moves in a wonderfully fluid way that the Japanese film doesn't.ElFuhrer said:I can't really decide which is worse, the simplistic character drawings of the USA one, or the freakish bug eyes of the Japan one.
Bad^Hat said:Worth noting also that many anime typically work on lower budgets, focussing more on compelling plots/characters than high-quality animation (which isn't to say they always nail that either ).
I tend to stick to anime movies if I'm after quality of animation. Watch anything Studio Ghibli if you want the quality, the frames-per-second and none of the "bug-eyes". Check out Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust for extreme detail (and gore).
Also, I think the bug-eyes are meant to mimick american animation, or just americans in general . Notice noone in any anime EVER looks asian, despite the fact they typically live in Japan and speak Japanese?
