What do you expect to find in the 'Practice' on HL2?

I would expect, of course, some work with jumping and ducking, practicing with some main weapons on dummies. Just like the Half Life 1.

But after all of that, there will be a room full of stuff to mess with, a Manipulator Gun on a table and a message on a sign saying: "Have fun.".

What do you guys expect in it? :D

I expect no practice, just like in Max Payne 2. I mean, I would much rather see the pracices throughout the game (like when you get the manipulator, you can play around with it in that room, before you set out). Much more proffessional and more immersive.

i would like to see some sort of starting out room just to make the story a little more interesting. I dont want to just end up with some guns and full armor sitting in a room with a door to another room and a monster. Some AI interaction to start out the story would be nice. :D

The way you say it does sound more 'profressional', but there is always something that you didn't know about it, and then when you realize what you can do with it its too late... :x

Have you ever played through Knight of the Old Republic. Read the manual, play throught the game once, and only then can you even get a glimpse of the mechanics driving that game :). But even in HL, the practice was only there to introduce the basic first person shooter movements., nothing specific (except the long jump).

ow yeah, that is right. I forgot that Gabe answered somebody's questions that NPCs can drop you a weapon or something, so that would be one of the things to mess with AI. ;D

In one of the videos, Alyx gives you a weapon, so yeah, NPC are aple to help you a lot more this time around.

I haven't played that game. :(
But you can't compare the things you could do on HL1 and the things you can do on HL2. Like phisics, NPCs commands and all. =/

I agree, but the game isn't gonna start out hardcore. It'll be rather easy first, letting you get used to the physics and the new possibilites of the Source engine. The first couple of chapters will be almost with no combat (I would think so) and there you can play and have fun. But when the proverbial sh|t hits the fan, you better be ready with that manipulator, cause boxes will fly!!

Yeah, that would be good... better than my thoughts.. :(

You got one ""

:p

It should be interesting to see how they do the training, as before, in hl1, it fitted into the game, as you where in BM's HC, but now your no longer there, maybe a "flashback" of one of the training things he has done, who knows..

For every point that I get, I get flames 10 times, so yay, plus this is just my opinion and few people like my opinions (although they are a lot better than anybody elses, ha ha ha).

yeah I'm expecting pretty much the same thing as in Half-life, but with a different look. It'll be something like the G-man waking you up to test your skills before sending you on the train to city 17.

That acutally doesn't sound half bad. I would take that chance to pop one in the middle of his forehead.

haha, didnt expect that last comment, thats great.

Sorry if my last message sounded sarcastic, but I really meant that your opinion was better than mine =D

or maybe the training will have NOTHING to do with the story... rather it's there to TRAIN you on how to play the game

Nah, there won't be any formal training levels in HL2. It wouldn't make sense any more, like it did in HL1.

I just expect that every time you get a major new weapon or vehicle, the game will slow down and take it easy on you, so you have time to experiment. Maybe the NPCs will give you pointers on how to do things, yeah that would work pretty well.

Alyx will probably be the main NPC that helps Gordon learn how to do things. (No, not those kinds of things. )

The first training level was a hev suit familiarisation tutorial, presumably given to gordon before starting his job. I loved this level - it fitted in with the storyline and atmosphere well.
I hope there will be something similar, perhaps a resistance assault course or training camp.

I guess i'm one of those nerds who always likes to read the manual and do the training first...

Other tutorials I like include Unreal2 (sucky game though), and CoD.

something basic, that ties into the story somehow.. the boot camp for Opfor was fantastic, as was the Training thingy with HL1.

heres hoping they dont skimp on it though.

I've always thought it could be some kind of slightly muddled dream sequence, where Gordon remembers the HL1 training sequence, but with added weirdness like vortigaunts watching from the windows, "ghosts" of scientists, broken walls looking out onto starfields rushing past, that sort of thing...

Actually I don't think you'll be handed a manipulator, only maybe a simple pistol, and the trainingcourse will be held by G-man. (You suddenly wake up there).

Then the screen goes black and you see how you fall down... Then you wake up on the train heading for City 17. That's what I expect if they're actually going for a seperate Training Course...

If not, then I expect to have a little room to try out each thing I get throughout the game (Unless it's something similiar to a pistol...)

Does sound compelling I must say...

Yeah i agree that it wouldnt make sense to have a seperate set of training levels.

HL1's hazard course made sense because it fitted into the storyline of Gordon starting out at BMRF and having to pcomplete a training program first.

I vote for the "Training as you move along" theory.. Wouldnt make sense to play a training course or resistance assault course when the starting plot in hl2 (or what i at least looks like from the e32k4 vid) is that you wake up and dont know what has happened after the resident cascade.. If you see what I mean..

.... maybe...

You should be banned instantly, because you told ppl things about the beta, while they wanted to speculate..

IF this is true..

I seem to remember one of the valve team saying there would be a training level. Maybe Ady is quoting that before you burn him at the stake..?

i imagine gman wakes you up tells you to smell the ashes and then you actually come round on the train. Str8 into this alien world where you know nothing, still rubbing the sandmans dust from your eyes.

That point in the vid where the guy whispers to you and says 'hey you, in here' will be the intro to the resistance followed with some kind of 'look we've smuggled in this pistol, we'll train you how to.....omgwtfSTRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDERRRR QUICK GR0D0N USE TEH PI5TOL.' and you're thrown straight into the action forced to learn on your feet. :smoking:

I don't remember where he said it, but Gabe ( I think) confirmed the hazard course for HL2. So, no beta peeping here... I hope...

I liked those things also. I realy hope that Half life 2 has some sort training tutorial that fits in the story.

I thing that I belong that "nerd" group too :)

That sounds like a pretty good idea.

Perhaps he has fallen asleep on the tram ride in to City 17 (or wherever he's going at the start)? Along with getting the training aspects in, you could also add in any G-man stuff: The back story and how and why Gordon is where he is. Would make sense with that line from G-man about, "Wake up Mr Freeman......"

He wakes with a shudder on the tram; a concerned passenger looks down upon him. "You okay buddy? Bad dream?"

Game begins.

I like it!

You don't. You start out with the GMan talking to you. Then you get off the train, and start at the station, and then whatever happens from there, happens.

You talk to Eli Vance, but I don't know when..

I think Valve would include the training level. They play test with people who don't play FPSs, and they want to attract people to the genre. Plus, some of the extra squad/ai/driving/manipulator stuff is sufficiently new/confusing to warrant it. I'm sure all of the l33t players here can opt out.

The first level of training you have to control the NPC's through obstacles and tunnels and the second training part you get guns and ammunition.

I hope you can pick up and fire health packs at combine. How ironic would that be getting killed by a healthpack
