The source was leaked but what does this mean? What good does it do you to have the source but not the actual game?

Lots of threads about this, check the sticky too. We have several programmers around here that have attempted to address the implications of this.

It means idiots can get credit card numbers from the idiots that wanted it from steam

Ohhhhhh I see.....I am reading the sticky at the top of the page. So basically if Carmack gets his hands on this, he can see how Valve did things with half life 2 and implement them in his own games.

but if he did, Valve could sue them for using their code without permission.

Carmack is a wuss, he probably got bruises from when he was a kid playing with nerf guns for God's sakes.

I somehow doubt Carmack would do such a thing. He is a genius programmer in his own right...the tech behind Doom III is probably more than adequate for his intentions. I wouldn't put it past him to take a gander at it should it float into his e-mail one day...I'm sure he'd be curious how Gabe and Co pulled off some of the things they have with Source. After all, this was a small company that came knocking on their doorstep about six years ago to license the Quake engine.

How would Valve know someone was using their code though? I thought the code was private. But also....isn't this kindof good news for gamers? Because as it is right no, half life 2 seems like it will be the best game out for a long time with no competition. Now that the code is released maybe we can have some great games being made that rival half life 2.

The more good competition there is. The better for us gamers.

the game industry is very tight, and according to some interviews with various developers, its actually relatively easy to see if people are borrowing code.

at the same time, I really don't think anything that valve has in there is so incredibley revolutionary that no other developer given 5 years and a lot of money couldn't come up with.

Sorry but I'm the type of person who believes in the intellectual property rights of individuals and companies. Also, what makes real competition work is the way various people approach similar problems in very different ways - not how various people would use exactly the same technology in slightly different ways.

Look how many people want to make mods & total conversions of HL2! We already have that type of "competition", most that are successful will be free of charge. Why would I want to buy mods from a dozen other companies, all of whom *stole* the gaming engine from the company that created it?

Think a little more deeply in to these issues; what has happened is not very good for anyone. This act has tainted the gaming industry and created a whole new level of distrust between companies & individual consumers. There are few other industries that have such rabid fan bases, and now the chasm will be widened instead of narrowed.

Hell no. Far Cry, Halo 2, Doom III, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost, and Deus Ex: Invisible War are all promising-looking titles. Sure, not many of them have as advanced tech as Half-Life 2 does, but they're contenders nontheless.

Halo 2 should be alright but I really think they could do a lot more with it. I think having water vehicles would really add to the game but I really don't know anything about Halo 2 so I can't talk. I haven't heard of Far Cry i'm going to check that out right now.
