What happened to my feet?!

Ok. I've been seeing something a little disturbing for some time in first person shooters and I notice from what we've seen so far of Half Life 2, that the trend continues.

The issue is where are my feet? This may sound a little bit funny, but when I look down in real life from my first person perspective, I can see the lower part of my body. In Half-Life 2 and other realistic first person shooters, however, they are missing!

So the question is, am I a real person in HL2 or just a floating camera with a hand and weapon mounted to it? This scares me! I want to be real!

So I suggest the following for giving me another step of realism and immersion in the game:

1) I would like to be able to see my lower body when I look down. This would help me know how close I am to the edge of that cliff and whether or not I'm wearing my HEV suit.
2) I would like to be able to see my shadow. Everyone else in the world casts a shadow, how come I don't? Shouldn't Combine soldiers (if they're truly smart) be able to notice my shadow around the corner and know I am there?
3) Realistic ladder climbing. If I climb a ladder in real life, It requires both of my hands. How can I carry a weapon at the same time? If I want to shoot, It should require me to stop so that I can hold on with one hand and use the weapon in the other.

I'll stop here. You can think of other examples (like realistic swimming too.) I really think this would enhance my experience. If not in the final game, I think this would be a great mod if done correctly. Thoughts?
 
Tribes 2 included feet, and it was fantastic. Why no other games have included such a feature is beyond me, I thought it was fantastic.
 
Good post. I was playing DoD the other day, i looked down and thought "i wish i could see my feet". At least in DoD if ur on a ladder, u can't shoot, which is kinda realistic. Like, how can u move up and down a ladder and shoot. U cant.
 
This is a design decision Valve made. They said it was really wierd if you could see your feet and shadow.
 
Valve wants you to feel like you ARE Gordon Freeman, now if you would look down in-game and see feet that are definitely not your size... :p
 
Gordon isn't just a floating camera with a weapon model though. He has a mass, around 80kg. As the other guy pointed out, it was a design decision made by Valve. I'm sure one could enable feet, legs and lower part of the torso if one wanted to.
 
I know it's a design decision but I'm in total agreement about the feet. I actually e-mailed Gabe asking "I noticed that everything has a shadow, but I have yet to see any shadow cast by Gordon himself. Are you going to add one?" and got no reply. I seriously think that even if I can't see my feet, I should still be casting a shadow. :-\
 
I never really understood it to be honest. I think I was the one who sent the email asking if you can see your feat. meh. Ask him why?, maybe?
 
im used to not seeing feet when i look down i guess. It doesnt bother me to look down and not see feet. In my mind, i know they are there. its a simple assumption.
 
I feel the same way, it would develop more depth because you actually feel like your playing the role of an actual person in game.

But it's not necessary. In most cases you will be looking straight forward. If you were in the same predicament as Gordon you shouldn't be standing around looking at your feet with your thumb up your bum.
 
If Half-Life 2 is supposed to be realistic it should come with an option which enables seeing your own feet and shadow. This 'ultra-realism' option should also include blinking your eyes, not being able to turn 180 instantly and having to go to the bathroom after intense action.

I'm serious.
 
I agree, lower torso and feet would be good, though I'd much rather just have a shadow, the neat ones from HL2 would be kinda cool to have one for yourself. Since I assume HL2 will have thirdperson view possible like HL1 could then there is some kind of model there to use and I imagine that plus the shadow would also be available in third person mode. How difficult would it be to rig the two so you get a body and shadow? I'd atleast like the option. And I'm sure the player models will have various sequences available already (multiplayer and driving buggy's for example) so everything should in theory work if enabled right?
 
How about sneazing too? What about sleep? Gordon should get tired, and the game would black out for several hours.

No.

For one blink your eyes. If they were to put that in game, where the screen would black out for a nano second, it would be utterly useless and a waste of time.

I don't know about you but I can turn 180 degrees pretty fast.
 
yeah it was nice too see your feet and legs and torso in tribes2 but it made the game slower :/

Just install really old crappy drivers, it'll do that then and you can pretend its blinking :)
 
I'm cool with no feet in my FPS games. I like having my downward view unobstructed.

accualy, this feature is in all games i've played, do you guys accualy keep your eyes open all the time your playing? :eek: well i prefer blinking with my real eyes
 
The feets are note evrything! I also would need the middle parts!

Just think how it would be cool if we could have a leak without beeing forced to quit the game for a few minutes!!!
 
wasn't there some game that when you looked down you were staring down at this chick's huge rack?? :D
 
I recall a game I played once where if you should look down you are greeted with a good amount of cleavage. I didn't get very far in that game but I sure as hell played it a lot. I think it might of been Trespasser or some kind of dinosaur thing :O

erm as far as the Trespasser game goes.... I haven't played it but I remember seeing screenshots of it and seeing a review in a magazine. You played a woman stuck on one of the Jurassic Park islands and they tried to make the game as realistic as possible apparently. With a horrific usable arm that you could use to manipulate objects in the world.

A review also stated that you could indeed, um, check out the woman's jubblies, but the reason was becuase she had a tatoo there which indicated how healthy she was (!) - it was an attempt at hyper realism. Most of the reviews thought the game was awful though!

Speaking of HL1 I found it hilarious when climbing a ladder I could rotate 180 degrees and fire a machine gun while using both hands! Perhaps Half Life 2 could bring in a few realistic things but still remain as good an "arcade" game as the first (I mean that in the best possible way of course!).
 
Keep the feet hidden, but let us see Gordon's shadow!

the arm was complicated at first to control but after a while it was pretty neat. The shooting of weapons was complicated if your used to crosshairs and static weapon, you had to aim it as you would a real gun. It could have been done better but I do think it was still pretty cool and more satisfaction killing a raptor that way than simply point and shooting at it until its dead

The mod I'm planning I'm hoping somehow to include a similar arm thing, by default no crosshairs either (though you can enable them if you want) but for the most part you'll have to aim as you would a proper weapon. It however wont be as complicated in use so shouldn't risk putting off most gamers not used to it like Tresspasser did. Also a limit on how many weapons can be carried at once aswell as the arms being possible to pick objects up (why have a gravgun when you have hands eh :)

Oh and if anyone knows where I can get the full game of tresspasser can you let me know. And I mean the legit version, don't want warez of it.

Anyhow, I actually reinstalled Trespasser a few weeks ago (still have it installed), and I must say.. the physics are great, a little clunky at times, but great.

Someone made a thread saying HL2's physics were inspired by Trespasser.. whether that's true or not, who knows. But, considering Trespasser was made in what, 98? The physics are still nearly unrivaled.
 
I think seeing feet would be cool, but I agree that having Gordon project a shadown, and have enemies react to it (as suggested earlier) would be much better. Btw, Turin, is that you from KH?

I think you're right about Trespasser. I remember that too. In fact, Trespasser really tried hard to do whith physics and puzzles based on physics what Half Life 2 has now mastered. I guess it was just before its time technologically.

Oh, and what about the original Tomb Raider? (I only played the first one.) I thought when you went into first person mode and looked down you could also see cleavage. Is this right?

Also, does anyone know of some FPS where you could see you own shadow? I really think it would be cool if your own shadow came into gameplay. Consider on-line multiplayer for a moment (think Counter Strike.) If shadows of players is enabled in-game, you will (in some instances) be able to see people before they come around a corner (like real life.) If you can't see your own shadow, then you won't be able to see if you are giving yourself away!

I have a really hard time believing this. Not the credibility of your statement, but that Valve decided to keep it out because it was too "weird." How could it be weird? Especially since it was in Tribes and most people seemed to like it...
 
I'm not really a big fan of "ulta-realism". I play games because they're fun, if I want to look down crouched over a cliff to shoot some guy, i don't want to worry about shooting my knee.

however, if it were an option, i'd have no problem... unless it made the dev time longer.
 
I know its a design decision..but it would have been simple to put it in... its just "that" much more immersion.
