How do you define being a "pro" at HL2DM? How good do you really have to be?
I'd consider Nextrex pro judging by his video. I'm not saying I am anywhere near that good, but I certainly am no noob. I check every corner, up, down, left, right. I check in the obvious places and others that I wouldn't think someone would be hiding in, but you can never be so sure. I can do that trick where you throw the grenade and grab it with the gravity gun before it gets too far out of reach. I can easily use the surrounding ennvironment to my advantage. My favorite weapon is the crossbow.

What's a good free site to upload your own sample video clips? Preferably able to be transferred via FTP?

Thanks

Just find a sniping point and you're fine. If there are no sniping points become a rocket whore and camp.

That's not being pro at all. I put red hot rods of steel through the heads of people who do that, and if they're lucky enough to fire a rocket at me just before I pull the trigger, well, at least I took them with me.

I consider a player pro (professional) when he/she is paid for playing that game.

I don't find that applicable because no matter how good a player is, even a n00b will get lucky sometimes.

Who cares, just keep playing deathmatch until you get better. Use your imagination, always keep your 2 best weapons with you.

Here's a good pointer tho. If you're at a really good sniping point, and it's one of those areas where people can throw grenades into it easily, then always keep your grav gun ready to throw the grenades out.

When you're running around with your SMG, then keep your grav gun as your secondary weapon at all times because if you have to reload or anything, and if there are objects around you, you can do a fast switch and destroy your enemy with the grav gun.

So yea just use common sense/imagination. Oh and I think the best combo is the grav gun with the saw blade..trust me it's super powerful, i've killed 4 people in a row with it once.

Pros are people who...

-don't run around with splody barrels
-recognize the announcement in lockdown for what it means
-don't have to rely soly on rockets and orbs to win
-know how to use the right weapon for the right moment, and improvise when for some reason they don't have the right weapon
-who can grav nade without scripts
-who can take you out without you having realized it until the last minute.
-that don't go "OMFG WTF WAS THAT!!!11" when they get nuked in runoff after 5 minutes of siren
ec etc

Thanks guys, those pointers pwn. I can grav-nade without any script, but still need a bit of practice.

What's grav nade? Is that when you toss a grenande in front of you then quickly switch to the grav gun and launch it?

Because if so, that's one of the easiest maneouvers around, and I don't know why you'd ever need a script for that.

And running around with explosive barrels isn't a n00b thing if you know how to use it, trust me.

It always helps to know your map. If the map is relatively small, and has a lot of items, then stick with the shot gun and grav gun as your primary and secondary weapons, so if you run outta shells, then chances are you can kill more than 1 person by launching an object at them. And don't be afraid to grav gun the hell outta cars down a map, that usually gives you a few extra kills.

A pro is someone who can effortlessley adapt to any game situation. Controlling the game is an unconscious act, and all focus is on tactics and combat (not .. "shit what was my grav gun bind again"?).

You can of course go into much further detail within the 'pro' bracket, but I think it's a good clean line. It's like a musician. Whether they are professionally employed or not, I would call someone a musical pro when they get to the point of not thinking about playing - just playing.

My favorite map is dm_overwatch. I know it like I know my apartment. Spawn points, weapon locations, good spots to get a good surprising shot, etc. Also, the last time someone tried to kill me with a car, I out-grav-gunned them and they ended up crushed. So much fun.
Any tips for dealing with rockets? I mean, you can duck if they are aiming at your head, jump if they aim for your legs (if they want to see you fly), or just dodge. Too bad you can't catch a rocket with the gravity gun, I mean, it's bigger than a grenade...

The best way to deal with rockets, is to A. Run... B. rush the player. A general rule for people weilding explosives at close range, is to move in as close as you can...like right in their face (preferably laying into them with a weapon). This puts them in the position to potentially blow themselves up with their own explosive, or launch it past you.

It won't do any good if you have a guy using an RPG at a high place where you'd have to take a ladder or another long way to get up.

If theres an RPG user up high, then the most obvious way to kill him is to find a good hiding spot and snipe him, or use the grenada/grav gun technique.

A perfect example of this is dm_lego. Now once someone gets control over that castle roof-top, things get extremely frustrating. The best way that seems to work for me is sniping those guys while hiding behind trees. Then, when you got them down, get your team to rush the rooftop and before you know it you'll be the ones who control the game.

Also don't be afraid to use your magnum, that gun is extremely useful and powerful, if there is no crossbow, or you run out of grenades, then please, use the magnum because it'll only take 2 shots to take someone down from far away.

+1
People who call themselves pros are mongs who want to feel 1337, unless they actually earn a living by playing in gaming tournaments.

Oh yeah...what do the announcements in Lockdown mean - I feel like I used to know, but I haven't played in awhile...

Is it when someone enters the Control Room, or is it when someone enters the place where the RPG is, or is it something else?

Its when someone enters the little airvent that leads to the the RPG/fan room.

Its an audio clue to either chuck a nade in there or plug in the fan-o-death

Ah yes, I knew it was one of those.... I love turning on the fan on an unsuspecting person... hehe

HAHA, the fan-0-death is awsome. I havent played HL2 DM in forever.

Pro is when you can summersault off a crate into a pile of explosive barrels, whip out your gravity gun and blast them into the far corners of the map, killing everyone on the enemy team, and your own.

How to plug the fan?
To plug it in… you know where the fan is right? Well on the wall on the other side of the fan there is a plug and a plug hole, simply plug the plug in to turn on the fan.

Combine balls and Rockets… Bleh… they should not even be in Pro, I hate n00bs use them in Pro, GRRRRRAAAAAAH it pisses me off.

I might add... i do play Pro and im not to bad at it, but im not the best :(
