What is the saddest/most beautiful song you've heard?

i agree, there's loads of crap ambient out there. i figure the problem is ambient is a tough thing to make, perhaps only because it's too easy to make poorly. anyone can throw some pad drones together, toss in some spacey shit, etc. perhaps that's what i find so addicting about it though, when an artist does ambient right, it can move you in a way most music can not.

there's always the risk of crossing into new-age territory too.

to relate ambient back to the topic, some of the most saddening pieces of music i've known were beatless and wordless.

Got some Torchwood music for you now.

To start off with there's this one:

This track is called
The Death of Dr. Owen Harper
. (The title's in spoiler tags because any Torchwood fan on here who has not seen Reset will get the ending spoiled for them).

I Believe In Him:

I don't know which episode this is from but it's a nice piece of music.

Goodbyes:

Played near the end of Exit Wounds, definitely the saddest Torchwood episode.

(Track name's in spoiler tags)
Death of Toshiko
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQegY85hzk8&feature=related
Another track taken from Exit Wounds. The track title would ruin the ending for people who haven't seen Exit Wounds.

The End Is Where We Start From:

Played right at the end of Exit Wounds. IMO a beautiful piece to round off the series.

This one always gets to me. Its got some personal significance to me too, because Ive lived away from my family for awhile now, and I cant imagine what it would be like to never be able to go back, and to only ever hear from them by letters once every few months.

Easily the saddest song out of the whole thread. Thats why it was posted in the "Sad thread" in the video forum.

Ah yes, I remember that. I thought was really sad too. Certainly got the tears welling up.

(Goz Quarter?)

<3

Goz Quarter really tugs at me in a way I can't quite understand. The beat is pretty standard Autechre circa 1997, and the melody isn't particularly extravagant. But it's still so... sad. The synths at the end sound like they're wailing.

watched the movie into the wild a while ago and it has some pretty good Eddie vedder songs in it:

Long nights

Society

the wolf

you should check them out.

I can't believe no one's posted this video yet!

Joseph Arthur - In The Sun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3E1Aa0K0Tp0

I think this is one of the best songs ever written and I MUST GET IT!!! I wish I could download it but I can't find anywhere to get it from. Play.com doesn't do it.

The entirety of "Enjoy Eternal Bliss" from Yndi Halda.

The entire album is pretty damn moving.

(The album is along the lines of Godspeed/A Silver Mt. Zion)

Hate Me by Blue October has been growing on me the past few days. I don't know which category it would fall under, but it's in one of them for me.

I think overall I find A Silver Mt. Zion the sadder band, but not by much.

Radiohead - Creep

Because I can relate to it.. Also:

Radiohead - How to disappear completely

Sigur Ros - Gitarjamm

I've had the DVD since March but just today realized that I watched the performances on Disc Two without ever watching the documentary on Disc One. Turns out the performances are a lot less random in the context of the documentary.....
