What is this thing?

That would be the Hydra... an enemy that was removed from the game pre-release as it didn't work very well.

You should ignore that video really, over 95% of the footage showed in it doesn't appear in the retail game :O

Ahh yes, the Hydra. Hopefully we'll see it back again in one of the future episodes.

Here's a link to the HLWiki page about it.

Why wasn't it in the game? Was it because of that whole hacking thing that happened in Germany?? I would really like to see it in HL game.

It looked cool killing NPC's, but when it faced the player the player got killed instantly.

The reason it was taken out according to Raising the Bar, is that it was fun to watch, but was not fun to fight and was hard to kill.

It should return with, say, fire as its weakness or something. It should also be inable to get inside small crawling spaces like ventilation ducts.

Now, imagine a Blast Pit-like puzzle, set in an old gas plant. You start on on of the top floors (say, the roof) and during your descent, some Hydras originating from the plant's sewers come crashing through holes/grates in the floor.
You have to make your way past, say, 3 floors, turning open a valve on each one to send excess gas back to the (ruptured) accumulator in the basement/sewers. When the last valve's opened, a countdown starts to get down to the sewer, ignite the gas buildup in there and kill the Hydras, before the buildup becomes high enough to suffocate you or ignite the entire building from the fires you may have already started.
Of course, Hydras will try and bother your hairy ass all the way to the sewers, and the best way to repel them is to acquaint them with fire. Say, from explosive barrels littered on each floor.

I know there's 'But-what-if's all over my story, but it's just too cool to cook up recipes for the Hydras return. Nargh.

That was pretty cool when he shot down the Gunship and it ran him over as it crashed...

Scripted sequence.

Actually yes and no, they stabbed like that in the leak (I seen video) Also the Co-Op mod Obsidian Conflict has a working hydra.
The Hydra code is actually in the SDK files.

that sounds a lot like the scenario in hl1 with those tentacle things taht responded to sound... did they even have a name ?
It does sounds alot like it, hence the 'Blast Pit' reference in the start ;) ('Blast Pit' is the name of the HL chapter in which the tentacle puzzle is feautred)

I don't know about the tentacle's name in HL1 though. It's just simply referred to as 'The Tentacle'

It's called Space Octopus.

1. Thats so retarded I know Valve wouldnt go through it
2. I dont listen to anything from a forum member named "test"

No, it is indeed called the Space Octopus.
