A poll to see what is most scary in a game

sudden fright's.. creepy sounds, Doom III Delta labs, in the dark with headphones on, turned right up... poo'd my pants.

only in a game eh?

in the first hl, it was all the monsters teleporting right behind you,

hl2 it was the fast zombies :D

I haven't really had any other 'scary' games

Well the alien vs predator games had a good way of building up suspense, and they just hang you there for a long time, then something fast and quick happens with lots of sreaming and noise then you release crud into your pants.

Great stuff.

There was one good scene in Doom 3 where those imps are in these tube things, in the research lab. Oldest trick in the book, i walked up really close to one and it jolted and banged the glass. That was the one and only time i physically jolted in my chair. More of that would have been great.

:O

TDE is scared of practically everything :E

Little creepy girls. edit: or babies, and dolls ;(

sudden shocks, things jump out quickly, and a spooky atmosphere generally give me the heebeejeebies! :D

Super Huge & Super Fat naked women.

anyone here play siren on ps2,bloody scary that was

Fear effect comes to mind when people talk about scary games - i played it at a mates house. I dont really buy into the horror genre myself.

atmosphere and psychological horror ala silent hill

Does anyone remember the voice acting from Res Evil 1. It was unbelievably crap.
"AHHHHHHH. Sorry, I didn't mean to do that"

"What is it?"
"Blood"
"Hope this is not Chris' blood"

Honestly, did they just grab people off the street and give them lines to read?

I'd rather not remember it.

Little girls with long hair covering their faces are scary - ex.The Ring or FEAR trailer.

or silent hill 4

Atmosphere/Psychological Stuff

I found the level "Our Benefactors" in HL2 to be truly frightening.

I just noticed anticipation scares me. In SC:CT, do you know how fast your heart is beating when you're hiding in the shadows and an enemy is just mere inches away?

Surprises, Atmosphere and Physhological horror scares me the most. Thats why Doom3 is like the scariest game i've ever played, ever!.

-surprises (eg things that jump at you)
-atmosphere (includes background noise and darkness)
-phycological horror (eg Silent Hill)
-anticipation

A Zombie plague something like the classic Dawn of the Dead scares me but not as much as a psychological horror, the first Silent Hill will always give me the chills. I think Harry Mason is one tough dad going through all that. Silent Hill is one spooky place.

Atmospheres, psychological horror and small enemies.

Uh not much really.

DOOM 3 was a walk in the park, Resident Evil was just fun, Silent Hill was not scary.

In fact, neither was System Shock 2.

(Also worth noting, I took the oppertunity to watch the Japanese versions of "Ring and Ring 2", totally not scary.)

Yea, but that could be true, or you might be trying to be all "tough and manly" to enlarge your e-penis. :P

Actually, what would really have been scarey, would have been if you went close up and it tapped on the glass, it rocks on the glass, you jolt, then one falls out a handy vent nearby and kicks your sorry ass.

Or, you go near it, it rocks on the glass, you jolt, you go 'better not touch any buttons', you turn around, the glass breaks, lots of demons kick your sorry ass.

What realy scared me before was playing Silent Hill 2 while listening to REM.

The strangest parts scare me. Like in Doom 3, it was the stuff growing on the walls that really freaked me. Not because it was gory, but because it just felt wrong. And, when I was young, the original Doom games scared me for similar reasons. Just things that felt 'wrong', like the faces in the walls, and the dissonant music on the last level of Doom 2.

Anticipation OF surprise. That's the worst, worse than the surprise.

Like when in Half Life, enterring an air duct pitch black. You KNOW there is a headcrab somewhere down the line to jump out, and with me, even though I know it when it happens it still makes me jump. Inching forward waiting for it to happen is worse than when it finally does.

I don't get scared from anticipation like someone said earlier though waiting in the shadows near an enemy you already know about but they don't know about you. That gets my heart going but not scared, just hoping I win.

Theres nothing as scary as things jumpin out at you, I found this out when playing FarCry, bloody trigens lunging at you then swiping their big claws across your face (usually dead with two swipes of their claws)
