What sets HL2 apart from all else...

HL2 will be set apart from the rest because of its fantastic individualistic Story and content, the graphics are just the Iceing on the cake. :p, and if you want a decent cake youve got to have good quality iceing, and its the nicest flavoured Iceing,, and I know for sure that its a much bigger cake, :)

Does NFS:U use Havok? I've played the game (alot), and the suspension (car hangs sideways in heavy curves) and car-crashes (cars crashing full frontal, or from 300km/h to 0 in 0.1 sec) look great, but I can't find any evidence on google.
I haven't played Max Payne 2, but I can imagine the physics must be great. As soon as I finish CoD and my exams, I'll give it a go...

Yeah its in the credits somewhere.

NFS undeground is kool :), but it doesnt really exploit the Havoc system much, and apart from being able to pretty much fully customise your car. I dont think it really ventures into new territory for the driving Sim genre. ... ( I wanna see cars that are built to be fully destructable, e.g. ripping tears of metal off the body, and random dents. Now that would be great with a havoc system, :)...)

Now that would be great with a havoc system, and its more of an incentive to keep you away from walls, and simply 'rebounding off like your cars made of indestructable material' :)...)

I can see it now: "OMG wh3re are teh kewl grphx that r on teh box!?!!?111"
It is simply inevitable that this forum will be flooded with those kinds of replies when HL2 comes out.

On another point, I have noticed a lack of comprehension among the masses when it comes to the difference between having DX9 installed and having a card that supports it. Why, just the other day I was talking to an acquaintance who insisted that Halo was a DX9 app because it required DX9 to be installed, and because it ran beautifuly on his computer, he assumed his GeForce 4 MX 440 was a DX9 card. This was not the only time, it has poped up with several people.

This is the biggest problem I forsee when HL2 comes out. Educate the masses now, or we will not be able to stem the flow of people saying: "OMG, i just bought HL2 and it doesnt work on my computer like on the vids. i am sooooooooo going to kill gabe newell for tricking me!!!111"

Edit: Woo! I'm a zombie!

Answer to question:
Game design. Yep. They build technology around the game they want to make. They push limits in areas other companies haven't bothered to look into. They polish existing gameplay and introduce completely new elements into their games. They invent new ideas and techniques in their game making process.

.... i have become a shameless spokesman for valve......
