So, I got 50 euro worth of GAME vouchers for Christmas and my new graphics card should be arriving within the next few days. There's been a good few FPSs released that I've missed out on so far and I'm thinking about which one (or two) to get.

Bioshock
Crysis
Call of Duty 4
Unreal Tournament 3
STALKER

I haven't played any of these games or their predecesors (except for the UT series, which I love). Which should I get, and why?
Oh, BTW, my rig is this (or will be when the new card arrives):
3.2 GHz processor
1 GB RAM
256 MB 7600GT graphics card

So I won't be playing Crysis on full settings.

You'll be barely playing Crysis at all. :p
I have practically the same rig as you and I ran the Crysis demo pretty nicely on low/medium.

For longetivity and quality I'd go with STALKER, it beats out every single game there in terms of SP.

But if you have 10 year old hard drive, be prepared for the longest loading times of your life.

Stalker or Bioshock, Crysis is good (graphics is not the only thing it has going for it) but is very very short.

I'm not so sure about STALKER. Open-ended games can sometimes just completly fail to pull me in. I stopped playing Oblivion after a week.

Don't miss Stalker. It's scary, atmospheric, and fun. Too bad it has no demo.

Eurogamer STALKER review said:
Early on in the story I was trying to find my way past a group of well-armed bandits. As night fell I circled their position. I could not get too close, since I was low on ammo, and my weapon was only a sawn-off shotgun anyway. It began to rain, and then thunder and lightning opened up, doing a haywire strobe light on the landscape. As I moved through the dark heaps of wasted masonry I saw movement: large things ahead of me in the valley. In the rain and dark I would not have seen them, except for the lightning. I sat there in the rain, terrified, watching these things move through dead scrubland. Should I just wait for morning? Could I just sit here in the rain, hiding behind some smashed concrete?

I played quite a bit of STALKER, but non-linear RPG element bla-bla isn't my kind of thing, so I'm probably not going to recommend that one.

I'd go for either Bioshock (which is really very good) or Crysis (which you probably won't be able to play that well).

Just because the game isn't as good as people make it out to be, or anything new or amazing, doesn't mean it's a bad game.

No, the game is not bad. I just didn't think you would ever recommend it. I thought you hated it.

I like Halo too, but what I hate is the misconception of its quality.

Indeed. I don't see it as the best game ever like so many people do. :x

SAMON LIKES HALO?!

I was leaning towards getting Bioshock and STALKER, but now the Witcher thread has sparked my interest in that game :P

I hadn't heard about it until twenty minutes ago. I read that thread out of pure boredom.

Call of Duty 4, the single player is exellent, and the multiplayer will have you coming back again and again for years.

Personally Id say a big no to Bioshock, think its incredibly overated, I barely got past the second section before turning off due to bordem, I great storyline it may have, but ill never know because I dont want to endure its boring action.

I haven't got STALKER but it does look to have really good elements to it, been pondering on getting it for a while.

I say get it. It's very fun and scary, there are dozens of side missions to do, but I prefer to do the primary missions only.

I have only played the first chapters too, but I heard it gets much better after the first half of the game.

Which? STALKER?

Really? I heard it gets worse after the first half of the game.

Well I reccomend Crysis, Bioshock (played only the demo but loved it) and UT3.

Crysis is a good fun game but like the others said, it is rather short and it has one of the most lame and downright frustrating endings I've seen in a game...

If you're looking for an interesting story and an atmospheric game, then Bioshock wins out of the lot.

As for UT3, I know there are a lot of people here that hate it for whatever reasons, but I absolutely love it. It depends a lot on what game types you liked in the previous games, if you liked Onslaught and were expecting something extraordinary, you'll be disappointed. However if you're a DM maniac like me, this game delivers. Plus all the new maps and mutators made by the community.

Which? STALKER?

Yes. I prefer to do the primary missions because the if the guy who gave you a secondary mission dies, the mission is failed and you ran around for nothing. That doesn't mean they are not fun, though. I just prefer to do the primary missions to follow the story.

Really? I heard it gets worse after the first half of the game.

Why would it get worse? The amazing story is slowly being revealed, that's why it gets better. But I never played it, so I don't know.

COD4. There is no competition please! Also, if you were an unreal fan, UT3 would be fantastic for a brand new Death match experience. Last but not least, I have a similar rig like yours and Crysis ran at 30 fps with all settings set to medium at 1024 by 768 with no AA or AF.

I enjoyed all those games, but Bioshock and Crysis I'm still playing. I can't say exactly why, but I'd choose Bioshock, it's a great game.

Okay, I'm going to hijack this thread slightly.

If you don't mind older games, try Freespace 2. It went open-source a few years back, and the open-source project has made it capable of supporting DirectX 9. The in-game graphics now have higher-resolution and better lighting than the in-game cinematics.

In fact, my old Geforce 2 can't handle it. :(

Plus there's a ton of good mods out there for it.

PS Bioshock is good but System Shock 2 is still better.

Holy sh**, now that's an old gfx card!:O Almost as old as the Jaton Trident 9880 8MB gfx card I used on my first system, which was a Pentium II Win 95 box.:)

Just because the game isn't as good as people make it out to be, or anything new or amazing, doesn't mean it's a bad game.

At this point I want you to hear yourself ... Here, lemme play it back to ya.

What about it, Barney? CnC3 isn't new and amazing, but it's quite polished and good.

for pure singleplayer, id ignore UT3, CoD4, and MAYBE crysis.

All have short/unsatisfying singleplayers.

Id recommend stalker or bioshock for non online play.

Watch gameplay footage at gametrailers.com of each and see which you would most like best. That's what I do.

Crysis and CoD4 have really short single player games, you'll get a lot more mileage out of STALKER and BioShock. As for UT3, Epic claimed they were making a full single player part for the game but they are full of shit, UT3's SP is just assorted bot matches strung together by boring cutscenes and a stupid story (they use all this twisted crap about "respawners" and "field lattice somethings" to explain why levels of their 'campaign' consist of a CTF match with bots.) Basically if you want more action get BioShock, if you want more role-playing to go with the shooting get STALKER. CoD4 is still fun if you like really linear games and don't mind the shortness, Crysis is less linear but is REALLY short if you only count the good parts of the game and not the part where the aliens come along and ruin the gameplay.

Get COD4 and UT3. I promise you this is the best thing you can do here.

I'm going to defy apparent logic and say Mass Effect. Technically, it's not an FPS - but it's so action-oriented it's got little more of an RPG bias than Deus Ex. The main areas don't really give you free reign to explore and discover - you go there with a specific mission to accomplish, which generally involves blowing shit up. And it's one of the best games I've ever played.
I sat down to play it at 10pm lastnight and didn't go to bed until 9am. One of a few ever-lengtheing nights I spent playing the game. It's the only console game I've actually liked since Sonic Adventure. Usually, I hate consoles with a passion. I'm glad my brother has a 360 now. :)

What about it, Barney? CnC3 isn't new and amazing, but it's quite polished and good.

Me and my old lady are buying a new house (Family is growing), so I only bought three games this year (Damn freaking "Down-payment and Closing Cost" scaring me crap-less): COD4, BIO and SOF3.

COD4 was short and sweat. Definitely deserves second and third time-play.

BIO: It felt OK, about halfway through the game but, I got turned off; where the theatre is, and the performing guy gets killed. I cant make myself to finish the game ever since. I cant explain why (Maybe it felt kind of slow for me) but, most people seem to like the game pretty much.

SOF3, is flat, worst game I have played since Iron Storm, its console, PC-Ported game with lots of flaws, and a lame storyline. Run-and-shoot-them-up tiype game, with no tactics whatsoever. I would never advice anyone I care to buy this game. The game is below budget line.

There is my two and half cents input.

Good Luck.

Bioshock

Good game but not great interms of FPS gameplay more in in terms of it's narrative and atmosphere. A game you'll play once and never play again most likely. If you get it get it cheap

Crysis

Good game even if you don't have everything on full. MP is quite fun as well.

Call of Duty 4

Good game again, short but Mp is very good. If you dont plan to play online then don't bother until it's cheap.

Unreal Tournament 3

Haven't tried this one myself but I've heard alot of mixed things about this ala assassin's creed. Maybe better to stick with the older ones? O_o

STALKER

Haven't tried this one either but I've heard alot of good things.

Personally I'd say it's between cod 4 and crysis and if i have to narrow it down to one then COD 4 would be my pick.

If you're after a story driven RPG then I'd say The Witcher is ideal, if you're after a different FPS then I'd say STALKER.

I recently started it again (having finished the Witcher) and forgot just how downright creepy and atmospheric it is at times. The combat can be ass hard at times, and you do need to save regularly, but it's a strangely compelling game.

Get the ID pack on steam.

Months of singleplayer goodness.

Unless you're a graphic whore
