Not enough
Cliffhangers are a good thing, but if the X-Files have taught us anything it's that you have to strike a good balance.
The way the X-Files kept us hooked was by answering SOME of the nagging questions, but doing it in such a way that MORE questions would arise. Throughout all of this, the MAIN mystery remained mysterious.
In Half-Life 2, we never got answers to anything, really. It's fine that the G-man is a big question mark, being the overarching mystery, but I would have liked some more explanation of the Combine, the Combine's plans for humanity, the Combine's relationship to the Vortigons, what Dr Brain was up to exactly, etc. Obviously we know the general outline of the answers to these questions, but I wanted more.
I'm sure you could fill in some of these blanks and retain a good cliffhanger ending.
Someone mentioned reading the newspapers on the walls in the game and whatnot, but I didn't see any that were readable (even with my textures all the way up). If you COULD have read the newspapers, heard a news radio broadcast in passing, etc. we could have been a little more immersed in the story without being "spoon-fed" the details.
The only way a cliffhanger works is if you provide enough substance to make someone really CARE about what they're missing.
I'm sure no-one's not going to play HL3 because they lost interest -- I'm just sayin'.
