Gaming blog Kotaku recently caught up with Hideo Kojima, the brains behind the influential Metal Gear series, shortly after his keynote address at last week's GO3 expo in Perth, Australia. Although both Kojima's speech and the subsequent interview run across the whole gamut of Kojima's development experience, Kotaku asked the question that has been plaguing the minds of PS3 and Xbox 360 fanboys alike:

Will Metal Gear Solid 4 remain PS3 exclusive?

To answer this question, Kojima, perhaps appropriately, equated the three next gen systems to a moviegoing experience.

"The PS3 is like the theatre, it's a little bit high-priced but it has to be high quality as well," he explained. "The 360 is a DVD, it still needs to be high quality but you need more variations, while the Wii is almost like a TV channel, because every game you have it with your family".

So how does this relate to PS3 exclusivity, you may ask? When the subject changed to Devil May Cry 4 going multiplatform, Kojima knew exactly where the conversation was going.

"[L]ike I said, MGS4 is aimed for the movie theatre, it's aimed for the PS3, so the game's scenario and graphics need this theatre-type hardware," Kojima responded. "It's when a producer has a game that can work on the 'DVD level' that a game will go multiplatform."

Summed up: "We're being payed tons of money by Sony to keep this exclusive. Plus, they have us by the balls."

Im happy about this. Dunno why just am. Probably because i WANT the PS3 to do good with the 360.

Its a very diplomatic answer, doesnt say anything concrete.
Its only confirmation of ps3 exclusivity if you believe that...
when a producer has a game that can work on the 'DVD level' that a game will go multiplatform
...doesnt include mgs4.

Wow, so multiplatform games are just mediocre compared to PS3-exclusive games. Strong words indeed but I can't help still loving the guy!!!

It sold like shit because it was way too underrated. No commercials shown for game, pretty much whole bunch of Xbox owners never thought there was a game call MGS2 Substance.

Well if you think about it, movies in the theaters do in fact go to DVD, so if you follow his analogy that means we're getting it for the 360!!! :p

/sarcasm

I really would want it on the 360 or else I'm going to miss out on this game.

The guy is talking out of his bottom :)

'theatre-type hardware' XD

If it takes commercials to achieve sales for the video game, the game fails to entertain the right crowd and deserves to die.

Exclusive games are usually better. A game designed from the ground up to take full advantage of either the 360 or PS3 would be better than one designed on both of them simultaneously.

Also, MGS4 is designed very much with the PS3 in mind. They've said so much with the engine being tailor made to PS3 hardware, Kojima even said the stealth effect on the suit would probably only be possible with PS3 (doubt this is true, but he did say it). Also, they're filling up the entire Blu-Ray with high quality sound sampling.

A port would be very expensive, very time consuming, and probably be significantly worse than the PS3 version. This coupled with the fact that X-BOX owners didn't show too much interest the first time around when MGS2 got ported, and that Konami already set precedence by not porting MGS3 ... makes it pretty likely that MGS4 will stay PS3 exclusive.

Last time I made a benign comment on something some guy called me a fanboy. For the record, I don't really care as long as I get to play it, I just think it's unlikely you'll see a port.

Hahah, nothing like insulting developers on your platform, I hope whoever makes DMC bails on the PS3 version for being insulted.

okay, that's good posting. No PS3 IS TEH PWN fanboyism, he just says what he thinks. Take notes ppl, take notes.

and from what i read about Substance, they basically just changed the ps2 read codes out for the xbox codes and called it a day. ZERO optimising, so u probably hold a valid point.

There'll probably be a MGS4 Substance, or something similar, on the 360. It's not something I expect to come out anytime soon, though.

Well I can tell you right now with almost perfect certainty that MGS4 could run on the 360. PS3 isn't that far superior of 360.

I just think it's sort of a bummer. They know TONS of people want it on the 360. They should deliver because think of how huge that would be.

Sure the MGS' that did get ported to Xbox didn't do so hot, but that's cause they were simple ports and also released after PS counter-parts. If they would have taken the time to improve the game to the platform and also optimize it and give it some extra love, it would do very well.

Also, I think there's also an expanded demographic that is getting the Xbox360 than the original Xbox.

True, it isnt much more powerful, if at all, but the gap between Xbox and PS2 was massive tech wise. That and 360 and PS3 run on completely different proccesing systems so you would have to recode it. . .

I think one reasons of why not so many people will buy mgs4 for 360 is cuz is a sequell, and sure people wouldnt hav much interest on buy a sequel whitout playing the firsts one
and the metal gear games are games that you hav play from begining

well, i started with mgs2, had no idea wtf was going on, but loved the pretty cutscenes and the great gameplay, so it worked for me.

I disagree. Advertising can play a very important role in making a title reach a wide and successful market, especially if it's not an already-established franchise. Immaculate successes aren't that common.

Plenty of great games could have achieved more financial success if they had been marketed well. Ico and Deus Ex come to mind.

<VADER> NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! </VADER>

Oh well this was the only thing I wanted on the PS3 and ?425 doesn't warrant a single game.

....Will he shut up with his stupid analogies? No sense at all.

his analogies were just a dig at the other two consoles.

But I think MSG is lame anyway so no bother.

PSYCHONAUTS!!!!!!

And yes, it would make sense to see this on the 360 at some point down the road, but not until Sony has milked it for a good long while and it has pushed quite a few PS3s into buyers' hands. This and Final Fantasy 13 are going to blow it up I predict....

Aren't there rumours that FF XIII will also go multi platform?

pretty bold prediction there. ;)
I mean physically blow up the system!! Hahaha! No, seriously, in japan in particular they will be flying off the shelves when FF13 hits. Mark my words...

There are supposed exclusivity talks underway right now--that is all. Half-empty? Half-full? Twice as big as it needs to be? You decide (your inner-fanboy will help).

actually, the words from the Exec's mouth when he was asked about exclusivity was "it's under discussion"

There is no doubt that it's up for grabs, it's just what happens after money is passed under table that counts.

Basically: PS3 is $600 Blu-Ray player, 360 requries actual work to be put towards the gameplay, Wii is all about family fun

Or: I'm talking complete bollox because Sony pays me loads of cash :)

Personally, I feel the PS3 is a more forest type experience, the 360 is obviously a medow and the Wii is a shubbery.

Ps3 is like a theater. Lots of movies, no games.
