What will I be missing in Doom 3?

I need the help of a stout Doom 3 fan :):

I'm a HL2 guy and that's why I bought an ATI, but I'm still curious what I'll be missing in Doom 3 compared to the people with the newer NVidia card. Are we talking only performance or are there nifty features that only the NVidia can handle (screenshots please).

My brother keeps bragging cause he's got an NVidia card :).

I can't really say without you posting just which video card you have.

But in general if you have a top of the line card, or near top of the line, it's going to be pretty much the same experience regardless of whether you use ATI or Nvidia.

does opengl not run with same features on nvidia and ati card?

Well with that highend of card I sincerely doubt you would notice any difference between it and an equivalent Nvidia card. I'm sure you can run it fine at high detail (Assuming the rest of your rig can handle it as well.)

Not alot.

Not even the top end nvidia and radeon cards can run it in ultra quality mode.

In addition to the 9800 Pro I got 512 Ram and 3.0 CPU, but I'm curious: there's been a ATI Nvidia stand-off over Doom 3 and HL2, are you just saying that in the lower end cards NVidia is better than ATI?

No, Doom 3 does not run any special features for ATI or Nvidia hardware.

The 6800 series will run slightly faster than the X800 series because of its architecture, OpenGL performance (ATI's OpenGL drivers suck), and Ultrashadow 2.

What does that mean for ATI cards? Absolutely nothing, Doom 3 will still run incredibly fast. In fact, faster frame rates will not help you at all because Doom 3 will cap frame rates at 60 FPS.

People have the misconception that Doom 3 will run horribly, even on top of the line systems. This is not true, it maybe the most advanced graphics engine on the planet but they have spent plenty of time optmizing it for all types of hardware.

Ok, so Doom 3 did it's job for both ATI/Nvidia, but HL2 clearly has a ATI advantage (they had to write a special program so it would run reasonably on NVidia). If I had an NVidia card I'd be pissed at Valve (but I'm not, go HL2).

Not scans, it's copyrighted material and that's a no-no on here

Nvidia card owners should not be pissed at Valve or Gabe at all... heres a thread link below.. read and be enlightened :p

Gabe on Nvidia cards

scans are not allowed here because of copyright reasons.. expect to see that post removed.. and/or be warned by pm or otherwise..

Both the Radeon 9800 and the FX 5900 (I assume this is the card your brother has) will render frames that look identical. The FX5900 very well may give far better frame rates though because that card was designed with Doom 3 in mind. Nvidia added a fetaure to the GPU called Ultra Shadow that is used for Shadow Volume Acceleration.

As for the guy who said Doom 3 is capped at 60fps he is DEAD WRONG.

The game runs at 60hz, once more the game is capped at 60hz not 60fps.

Objects (people, bullets, anything affected by physics) will update 60 times a second. If you are getting 120 FPS and you see a shadow slide along a wall it will be drawn in a different spot every frame. If you spin your mouse 360 degrees in 1 second at 120 fps you will draw a frame every 3 degrees ...

OK, now does that clear up this Doom 3 is capped at 60 FPS miss-quote that is floating around the web?

As for the guy who said Doom 3 is capped at 60fps he is DEAD right

once more the game is not capped at 60hz refresh as i've run it at 100hz refresh using program called refresh lock

OK, now does that clear up this Doom 3 is capped at 60 FPS

as for half life 2 the nvidia Fx 5200-5950 cards will be only using direct x 8 and not direct x 9 as they are just too slow for it. haha

go ATI

WHY would you drag up a thread that's 3+ months old to make a useless comment that's already been stated in threads since this? Also, why do this for your FIRST post? It boggles the mind.

Haha. The joke is on you. Doom 3 is an OpenGL game. It's primarily DX8, with very very few DX9 instructions.

The only advantage Doom 3 has in graphics over Half-life 2 is the dynamic shadows cast by EVERYTHING. But with the great gameplay of HL2, who needs that?

In the end, it doesn't matter. I have a 9800 Pro, 768 MB RDRAM, and a P4 2.2 gHz processor. It runs great on high detail, 1280x1024 resolution.

The key words are halflife2 so the jokes really on you. Remember read the beginning of the sentence.

You should actually be less worried about the video card you have since you have a 9800 Pro and start think about getting another 512mb of Ram. Doom 3 and HL2 love a Gig of Ram under the hood.

edit: woah, wtf, didn't realize this just got drug up out of the basement. a second time no less.

Let me ask you this..if the eye cannot tell 60 fps vs 120fps..why would you need more than 60 FPS?

Human eyes I believe cannot see past 60 frames per second.....

Actually this guy just needs to practice his english.
By "It" it refered to Doom 3, though he ment to have it link back to the gfx card.
So he really ment
"Doom 3 is an OpenGL game. The Nvidia Fx 5200-5950 cards are primarily DX8, with very very few DX9 instructions."

No the jokes on you as i posted this and it clearly says:--

as for half life 2 the nvidia Fx 5200-5950 cards will be only using direct x 8 and not direct x 9 as they are just too slow for it. haha

No, the joke is still on you because you bumped a ~6 month old thread.

you as i posted this and it clearly says:--
I wasn't the one who posted earlier.

Yes but THAT IS WRONG.
He WAS RIGHT, using my revised sentence it
Thus
direct x 8 and not direct x 9 as they are just too slow for it.
Is Wrong
and
The Nvidia Fx 5200-5950 cards are primarily DX8, with very very few DX9 instructions.
Is Right.
He wasn't refering to doom 3 AT ALL.
