OK. So I have just beaten half life 2. The ending was poor, to say the least. The climax was fantastic- the gravity gun was superb, the twists and turns before the final confrontation were the best ive seen In a game. The genius of overpowering the manipulator… but all that climax was wasted, when just as it reaches its highest, time freezes and the Gman says goodbye. that’s it.

WHAT THE HELL? that’s supposed to be an ending?

So here’s mine.

“Gordon! The portal is imploding!” screams Alyx. The hazed universe floating in front of you buckles and warps, before spewing out a dozen combine dropships. Hundreds of troops rush out onto the skyscraper and point their gun at you, screaming “FREEZE!”
“Don’t shoot them Gordon… we don’t have a choice…” Looking around, you see there is no point in trying to kill them. Bullets would pierce your skin before you could even pull the trigger on the manipulator.
“Gordon…” whispers Alyx, “the portal…” Looking at the flickering and terribly instable hole that has been ripped in the sky, you realise its you only choice.
“RUN!” as you sprint for the opening, the whole left side of the upper skyscraper explodes, sending half the covenant forces plummeting down to the ground while the other half are left in disarray, leaving you to jump through the portal to the unknown…

ZZZZzzzzap
“where are we Gordon?”
Looking around, you notice you are in the heart of a civil war. There are skyscrapers everywhere, huge flying beasts roar past as the city is torn apart. The combine are revolting against someone, and you are stuck in the middle. Suddenly you jump to various other parts of the city, separated from alyx in the teleportation. Glancing up from the battle you see a man in a suit in the window of a skyscraper, talking to someone--

ZZZZzzzzap
Back on earth, and the situation is not better. The covenant have deserted the skyscraper, and you are alone on the very top…
CCRRRRUUUUNNNCCHHHHH
The skyscraper sways, and tons of rubble tumble off the edge. Suddenly the chunk you are standing on breaks off, and plummets down the skyscraper until- CRUNCH, the rubble smashes on a spike and the manipulator slips and smashes into the side of the building, erupting in a blue explosion. You shakily get up, balanced on the very edge of the skyscraper. its a long way down...
“freeze!” shouts a squad of combine. Looking up, you see you are surrounded.
“I’m going to enjoy this…” mumbles the combine… and just as he is about to fire, you are whisked off the ledge and suddenly begin to fall down at a tremendous speed. Looking around, you see that Dog has grabbed you and jumped off…
Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.
The ground speeds up to your face, and Dogs metal grip only tightens. theres no way you can survive this... OH MY GOD... AAAAGHR!
CRRRAASDHSHSHHHHHHHHHHH……. The screen goes white, and as your vision returns you see that you landed fine, but dog is inactive, crushed under its own weight. if he hadnt of held you...
But what’s this? The buggy is sitting next to you. And as you look behind, you see an army of combine blocking the way to out of city 17, with striders and gunships. There is no possible way you can make it… but you can try…
“Gordon!” screams barney, “you made it! There’s not a second to lose, they’re going to destroy the city!” And so barney jumps on the back, utilising the newly mounted gun. Slipping into the cockpit you prepare yourself…

CCRRRREEEAAAKKK….
“Gordon, look behind you!”
The skyscraper is falling down, plummeting like a tree, and it is about to hit you…
“GO GO GO!!”
Screeching on the turbo, you rush past the ruined houses and shops, desperately evading the combine. Smashing past cars and troops you notice a shadow is forming… its going to land.. Putting your foot on the pedal you notice a bridge. You can make it.
BAAAANNNNGGG
The bridge is blown in two by a stray rocket, and the right side is crumbling away, with no time to stop you smash into the crumbling bride, and jump over the remaining gap… screeching down on the other side, you fall out the buggy and smash onto the floor. When you regain your senses you get up, JUST to witness the tip of the skyscraper smash down a metre in front of you.

Barney crawls himself out of the rubble. “dear god… we actually did it…”
Looking forward, you see the final gate of the city. This is all that blocks your way between enslavement and freedom.
“All the other survivors have made it out… its just us left. I’ll go and open it, you wait here. we must hurry... theyve allready planted the bomb... ”
Barney runs off and climbs over a wall.
……dudududuududDUDUDUDUDU
As if things werent confusing enough, a helicopter crashes down in front of you, and out steps your old friend, the Gman.

“good evening, Doctor freeman. I see you have had quite an impact on this town in your little stay here… but there is still more to do. While you may have liberated one small city, there is a lot to do before you can come anywhere near to victory, and time is short. I hear your friend has appeared somewhere… unfortunate. If you want to save her, you will have to follow me. Enter the helicopter, and you can help me with a small task I must attend to. You may find the location rather… ironic. I am sure it is a place you would not like to see again. If you do not want to risk your life again, you can follow barney to the gate, and help your freind. but in doing this, it will be too late to stop Xen.. ”.
You step into the helicopter.
“wonderful choice, Dr. Freeman. I think you will find that Black mesa has changed quite a lot scince you last visited.”

Then the credits come down, and it says “HALF LIFE 3, RELEASED IN 20 YEARS!!! PRE ORDER NOW TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT!!!

I think there should be two gunships.

J/k.

Erm... ok, you come to a bridge with a giant orange haired dinosaur thing on the other side spitting fireballs. You jump over his head and hit a button destroying the bridge and sending the dinosaur thing into the lava. Beyond the button you find alyx who says "Thank you Gordon, but the princess is in another castle"

Meh. :p I liked the ending...

Oh, and  at "covenant". :p

aha yeah as soon as i saw that i stopped reading.

I'd like to have a trip to the combine world, chasing Dr. Breen. That and a better explanation of all what has happened.

Lemme guess, you rushed through the game?
took me about 20 hours. i spent ages checking EVERYTHING, i reckon i saw most things in the game. im going to buy the guide later and play it through again on hard mode, but this time get everything. so no i did not rush through the game... what exactly makes you think that? because i dont like the ending? :|

we already defeted the Combine, so the rest would be useless...

we know what happened, aside from whether Alyx survived.

I'm betting that Eli Vance and the other doctor did, she would have been taking him out of the tower while your fighting Breen, so no worries.

Alyx...next time she's either dead, or in the employ of G-Man

Because you don't seem to understand it. The ending is actually so predictable that no one even thought of it and I admit that even I literally yelled "WHAT!? Is this it?" when the credits rolled in. First it felt completely pointless but then I recapped the whole game and noticed that it fits perfectly in the theme of the game and especially gman.

I Thought the end of the game was great, it was simple but still fit so well that it astounds me. It looked really cool the way time stoped and everything, the g-man fit well, fit into the game's plot well.... I did, however think that the last two levels were too easy, even on hard. In fact I thought the whole game was too easy. I played through it on hard, and finished in 20 hrs, I did kind of rushed, just to finish before my little brother, but still 20 hrs on hard? The game was great though and I loved every bit of it, great graphics, sound, plot, enemys, weapons, vehicle, they created a better environment and feel about the game since Deus Ex, and the end fit all of these attributes as well.

Also, I think Valve not explaining a whole lot at the end is what really keeps the game intriguing, if they explain a lot, then you aren't wonderiing about it anymore, instead you have to play through the game a few more times, and pick up all of the little things.

The ending was perfect, you just need to understand it...like if you dont udnerstand it hits you like a frieght train...but you have to stop that freight train before ti does hit you :D

I think the ending was about as suitable as is possible. It's to mature a game to have some sort of 'boss fight'.

I thought the ending was good. In fact, that they ended it in the climax sort of was the best possible thing for Half Life 3's continuation.

I have a feeling we're going to have to kill that huge worm thing Breen was talking to on the screen...

This thread serves as proof as to why this thread creator was not in charge of the Half-Life story. That is the worst script I've ever read. You didn't even have the bad guys named correctly.

Well, they definately should have explained more about the situation when you stopped at the rebel bases and stuff. Like why some of the aliens were on your side, maybe a bit about the headcrabs, and a little bit about the combine. And most importantly more about what happened after hl1. Finding out about that stuff was part of the reason there was so much hype about hl2.
The ending with G-Man was great though. They could have made his speech a little bit longer, maybe saying something about combine, but very little. They also could have shown him quickly in certain areas like in hl1. When Dr. Breen was trying to convince the combine to stay on earth, they could have shown him standing behind the combine leader guy or something, to make him seem more ominous.

Well you do find out what happened after black mesa...theres a clipboard in Eli's lab tellign you what happened...

"Portal storm continues"

Also the combine werent leavign earth, breen was simply wanting to give it to them still in exchange for power...god dam you breen!!

They did (show him throughout the game, and he leaves quickly)

Maybe you missed him.

He showed up usually during a calm time

The aliens tell you why they are on your side if you bother to talk to them.
We learn all about what happens in the interem between HL1 and HL2. Add in Op Force and you know EXACTLY what happens between the two.

Headcrabs? Self explanitory.

Whats to know about the combine? The only sorta unanswered question, and I think even this was answered, is are they, or were they, human. The combine anliens, I don't think anyone aside from Breen and the G-man know much about. Other then they are enslaving our entire species in a brutal overruling of our way of life.

Soo, no problems at all really.

I dont see how the normal ending could get ny better, maybe if they actually showed the earth/city/people getting annihilated, then it would be a little better :)

It was perfect, G-man wanted to make the events seem like a quick glance. Like we have no sense of time, which we dont since he can stop time and suspend us after the black mesa incident.

i LOVED the ending..

L-O-V-E-D!

it was just this awsome climax of pure Gman...

the freight train hit me hard, and crushed me into bloody little 1998 gibs...

i agree it would have been better to explain more about the story, what happoned since black mesa, but remember, there is still hl3 (and its possible, but unlikely, hl4), and that doesnt mention all the content valve promosed, they cut a lot from this game, which means they have a lot of unfinished crap lying around the HDD's, so they can pump out little expansions (didnt they say they would do it for free or something?)
