What games were you expecting in 2004? And did they live up to your expectations?

My idea is to rate every game based on your expectations before the release, and then rate the final product if you have completed the game.

Unreal Tournament 2004
- before : 95%

Doom 3

And thank god it isn't Half-Life. And why say it's "more overrated than Halo 2" when you apparently haven't played Halo 2 to find out?

Half-Life 2:
- before : 95%
- after : 97%
(Taken as a single player game at least. Though I try to like it, CS still does my head in).

UT2004:
- before : 75%
- after : 96%
(I desperately wanted to like UT2003. I fooled myself into thinking that there was still a little bit of my beloved Unreal Tournament there somewhere. Only after UT2004 was released did I realise just how dreadful 2003 really was.)

Doom 3:
- before : 75%
- after : 80%
(I never get excited about ID games so I never get disappointed.)

Deus Ex 2:
- before : 90%
- after : 69%
(The european release took enough extra time to delay the release until 2004. Frankly the game was the most atrocious sequel this side of Unreal 2. And that's a bad comparrison considering that Deus Ex 1 was far far better than Unreal 1 ever was.)

Rating things with Percentages:
- before : 90%
- after : 3/10
(No seriously, 2004 has shown me how ridiculous percentage scores are when previously I thought they were great ^^)

My expectations for 2004:

Half-Life 2
-before: 98%
-after: 98%

That is all. Of course there were other games this year, but they all became a big blur once Half-Life 2 was released. :)

Feath. Why not just shut the **** up and let someone have an opinion.

Kupoartist. I've played Halo2 and it sucks as much as i thought the first one did. I would'nt put a game i've not liked since the day Xbox came out in a list of games i was looking forward too....

You still made the claim that HL2 is more overrated than Halo 2 though. Halo 2 just became a Gamespy GOTY... does that make any sense to you at all? Surely with the far greater sales that Halo 2 achieves, and the shining reviews it recieves, doesn't that make Halo 2 more overrated if you like it even less than HL2?

I'm just saying, I don't agree with saying that games are great because they are very similar to their prequels. I prefer something a bit more innovative.

A little disappointed but still the easily one of the best FPS games i've ever played.

Far Cry
-before: 93%

Before i got this game i had to wait three weeks to play it, and during that time i spent it on the ubisoft forum and read about how everyone on there thought it was the best game ever. So i got hyped up for it, but let down. Great game, but nothing special. First few levels were great fun, afterwards it got really dull, really fast.

Ninja Gaiden
- before: Didn't know it existed

Best game i've played all year. And the hardest game i've ever played. Anyone whose played the Master Ninja Tournament knows what i'm talking about.

Average shooter, fantastic graphics.

Halo 2

Its a real shame this game turned out to be the exact same game as the original. Nothing new here but the multiplayer, which is damn good.

UT 2004

Best MP ever.

GTA: SA
- before: 94%

Wicked game. Like Halo 2, it was essentially the same gameplay with a few added features. But hot-damn those features are SO MUCH COOLER then anything in Halo 2.

Burnout 3
- before: 90%
- after: 93%

Best racing game ever.

Fable
- before: 85%
- after: 70%

It wasn't even an RPG, it was an action-adventure game.

Vampire The Masquerade : Bloodlines
- before: 85%
- after: 88%

Great game, could be a shitload better if they fixed the bugs (specifically the LONG load times, stuttering and FPS bugs)

Rome: Total War
- before: 80%

Best RTS i've played since Starcraft. and its also provided one of the most memorable gaming experiences of the past few years for me.
This year has taught me that less attention i pay towards games, the bigger the pay-off is. Now to save up for WoW

No actually, I didn't think that, but in the end I was wrong, it was very different. In a bad way. It wasn't innovative, but it wasn't like Doom 1 or 2 at all either, it just screwed up. It tried to be a Doom remake, but failed horribly.

Could've easily been so much more if Ion Storm just went with another engine.
I think the Unreal 2 Engine is fine, it's just a matter of how Ion Storm modded that engine and gave it a bunch of ridiculous low quality textures, micro-environments and low model densities so they could afford Ugly but fairly high-poly models and fancy "look we're almost Doom 3!" shadows that don't do jack-s**t. Oh, and then there's the ultimate issue that Deus Ex 2 looks uglier than every other Unreal Engine game i've ever seen, yet it runs worse than all of them.

Oh and I was suprised to hear that Half-Life 2 uses Light Bloom. I thought that was an Ion Storm code word for making everything impossibly ugly.

Stop being such a tart. If you can't handle someone telling you to shut up then you should'nt use the internet...or even go outside your own house. I never quoted and disagreed with your opinion so come again?

Oh and i never said a game has to be the same as its prequel for it to be good...but Doom3 is supposed to be and play like mother****ing DOOM man. It plays like DOOM, it FEELS like DOOM...it is DOOM. If you bought Doom3 expecting a complicated, strategic FPS then more fool you.

And thats why Burnout 3 won Xbox game of the year at Gamespot. Because it is ridiculously fun. Especially when smashing your best friend into an oncoming truck, and watching his car twist and wretch in slow-mo :E.

But Doom 3 didn't play like Doom.

Doom throws you into a map where there are 10-20 monsters in each room. Doom 3 threw you into a corridor where there were 2 imps waiting in the dark, a health pack in the corner with a zombie camping next to it in the darkness and another imp hiding in a secret wall.

Doom was/still is really fun run-and-gun gameplay. Doom 3 was walk and wait the imp to jump kind of gameplay. Not that fun to the majority of people out there, and nothing compared to its predecessor.

but anyway, like you said, its my opinion. But i seriously doubt that you'll find alot of people who agrees with you on what you think of Doom 3 compared to the original.

Feath said:

in my opinion the reazon of why the people say that the first game of a serie is the best cuz sometimes the sequels are very diferents and feel like playing a diferent game
is good that a sequel can be a lot innovative but is better that the get sticked to the principles of the first game

for example I watched a video of HL2 and I see that the sounds was very similiar to the sounds of HL1 so that makes me happy cuz I was worried if HL2 was going to be very diferent of HL1

but someone say the opossite in this thread so I am worried again

Well RMJC...i don't think HL2 is a shit game, its far from shit compared to most FPS games we get but i just don't think its half the fun HL1 was. It is quite similar to HL1 but the advanced AI has made it less fun tbh.

Far Cry was my suprise of the year. Not because I loved the game. Not that at all, (Although many bits of it were great).

The engine is certainly capable, and I found myself wondering around on many cases going "This would be a good engine to mod (idea)"

However the game itself was let down by a few rather irritating things. And its all design based. (Who the hell thought the Catacombs were a good idea?)

Enemies that can fire stupid amounts of rockets at with you and take a lot of damage are cool, but only outside when there is room to run around. Putting this same enemy in a choke point area in a corridoor where there seems to be no way round isn't a good idea its a silly one. And one that almost forced me to put my keyboard through the wall. Oh that and it has one of those damn Trigent "olo one hit kill" punch things. So the typical way of dealing with someone with a rocket launcher can't happen. GAH!

Oh and don't get me started about the Trigent "UBER LEAP OF DEWM!" I'm walking round a map, put two bullets in this thing and then whoosh and I'm dead. Woo.

However in Far Crys defense it did improve on that mess that is Catacombs by using the total awesomeness that is Swamps. And then all the other levels all the way to Volcano. Which sucked. Incidently however the story didn't annoy me. It was a little like Quake 2's. Its an action game. Its meant to be in the same vein as an action movie. Where not much story happens and a lot of shooting does.

Also Far Cry wins for one of the best gaming lines ever "Doyle! My arm is turning green!"

But as a Game, HL2 beats it. But enginewise, I'm not so sure now.....
