vote!

for some reason, i want to sacrifice myself for my country. :devil:

The country I live in. I accidently voted "Other"

It's a country; I live in it. My home and everything I know is here, which is worth something. I do hope to expand my horizons with time though. I'm not big on nationalism. If the country were in serious crisis and on the brink of destruction, I would defend it. Otherwise, forget about it.

I voted Number 2. I live in the United States I truly believe that it would be my duty to defend my country with all that I have. I have great pride in being a citizen of the USA.

if anyone ever says shit about canada i sure as hell talk back :)

Now, lets not forget New Zealand, the home of the Kiwi.

I will defend it with everything I have so that I may play my PC under the roof of my house and post in this forum :D Honor and glory!!!!

A country, that i live in.

I would not die for Sweden. The lives of people are more important than the existance of a country.

Since Singapore is so small, it is my duty to save her. :sniper:

It's a country that I live in, pretty much.

And no, I'd not die for Sweden. I don't think I'd even fight for Sweden.

not that many patriots around here..........

not that many patriots around here..........

Better that way :p

I couldn't be, not that I would be regarded bad by foreigners but mostly by my own people...

(btw this thread will be faster in 'politics' than we marched in in Poland*...)

(*politically incorrect joke, as suiting the politics section ;))

A place that I live in... but that I might fight for if there was a guarantee of my safety.

<Bombing raid>

/me hides under table

I live in Australia. I'd prefer to live in the US. Id fight invaders into Australia, depending on who they were and why we were fighting them. I'd fight for the US too.

what if

US vs Austrailia?

i live in it. but if things came to the worst and another country wanted to kill us all, id defend and destroy

I'd fight for the UK, but only if we were actually in danger (Battle of Britain scenario). Likewise, I'd probably fight for a lot of countries if they were in real danger of being taken. France, Germany, Australia, US and such. But to me, my country is a place I live in. I like some of the people, I like some of the culture and history. Not all of them, not all of it. I'd like to move some day because it'd help me understand the world better.

Naturalise as a US citizen then. Arnie did it. And I have a friend who could have, but wanted to stay a UK citizen only. Lives back in the UK now.

As for me I would defend the UK if asked, but it's never gonna happen (we have a professional army, not conscripts).

I'd sure as hell kick invaders out of my hometown, even if the invaders happened to be from London :D

But place where I live I guess.

I didn't vote because I don't like the poll, but I'd fight for my country, because my country seems more like an extension of me and my family...
That however, can be said for most of the world, though I do not feel it so strongly.

I live in it.

However, under the right circumstances, I'd fight for my country.

It would never happen. But in a hypothetical fanstasy scenario, it would depend why and I would decide on the issues and circumstances.

My country is just a country that I live in. Personally I think patriotism is a bain of humanity.

Its not as easy as saying 'yeah i want to be one' you have to be sponsored by corporation for employment. I lost my job in the USA, and could not get another job. Its hard enough to get a job, but it was impossible for me having the baggage of needing a visa and so on. Most companies also will not sponsor u for a greencard, they keep you on a visa, then u cant leave their employ and if u do u r heading back to your homeland.

I even tried to enlist in the United States Army, did the enlistment test and so on. But, they said they needed to check with battalion command before I could get in, as my circumstances were 'irregular'. in the interim period, my visa with my former employer was finished, meaning I had to leave the USA before the army worked out what it was doing.

There was just no way to do it - unless you are:

1) A Political Asylee or from Cuba;

2) Going to Marry an American for real, or convince an American that its real when you marry her, stay for more than 2 years and then bail OR have a sham marriage with some1 very very very cluey to convince the INS who is willing to live with you for 2 years and not turn you in, and never put a foot wrong when talking to the Feds (thats like 1 in a million people btw);

3) win the greencard lottery - roughly 45,000 greencards per year, over 10 million applicants.

4) Have enough money to get an investors visa - roughly US 100,000 with a good lawyer ( not even close to having that money)

5) Get a corporation to sponsor you for a greencard - to do so you must be in a position where they can prove to the satisfaction of the Dept of Labour that no1 else in the United States can do your job. Big call.

6) Serve honorably in a combat theatre for 6 months in the US military, you are eligible for US citizenship then BUT u cannot join the US Army without a greencard, usually.....

7) Be in a category of employment that has automatic rights to a greencard, such as a distinguished professor, or extraordinary ability (like Arnie for his weightlifting).

8) Be the unmarried son or daughter of a US citizen.

9) Be the unmarried daughter or son of a US greencard holder BUT - the application process takes about 8 years, atm.......to move through the queue. Likely to be longer by the time you get to the end of your queue.

So basically - the options are few, not very realistic, and none of which I could apply for or meet. And to be honest, very few people could.

Last time it happened, no1 ran away I think - they just surrendered when it was hopeless.

So you voted for option two then?

edit: I think a lot of people are getting confused, or is it just me? You vote for option 1, yet you would fight for your country if it was ever attacked, so you should of voted for option 2?

I would expect every to fight for their country, perhaps not to save the government, but to save themselves, their home, their family and their friends.

Basically everyone who could afford to run away did. It's not that easy, considering the fact that japan had taken the whole of Malaya.

I think it depends on what you consider a country to be. I would fight to protect the ones I love and what I hold dear. The preservation of the concept of the United States, however, is something I could care less about.

Well clearly the civilians would run away - but we were talking about the armed forces. About 130,000 allied troops were captured. Some got away, but very few.

I would fight for the lives of other citizens in need, but not for my country. Never for my country or any other.
