When will it go gold?

Id say this week or next if it is going to be released on time. Does this sound about right, usually 3 weeks before the launch date.

I heard (a while back) that it was going gold on 15th September. Can anyone confirm this?

Sept 15 or so would be necessary to really make a Sept. 30 release a solid fact. That gives them about two weeks (which, if that interview was real, is what they expect as well). So, two weeks hopefully.

I just hope they release the benchmark tool when it goes gold :)

I know there's websites like gonegold.com that announce what seem to be ALL the gold dates, but do you think there'll be anyway for Valve to get it gold without anyone knowing? I think that'd be cool.

They stay out of contact between the 15th and the 30th, we don't think it's gone gold, we go to the shop HL2!! :D

i swear you will all shit yourselves when it gets delayed till jan 2004.....hehe

Not really, Id get first semester + exams done without the game consuming my life. Actually it would be for the better probably ;)

The only Gold Date I've heard is the 13th of September, which is what Gamestar reported.

How long will it take Vivendi to make enough copies to supply demand? Can't be any more than a week, surely.

Also, Valve may not announce when it goes gold. If I see any "the game is delayed because it hasn't gone gold yet" comments in the middle of September, I'll start throttling people.

Anytime from now up to the 25th of September.

I think anywhere between Sept. 13th - Sept. 20th is my best guess.....yet again I look back with my experiences when Epic rushed UT2K3 going gold, took them less than a week to publish, and start spinnin CD's.

The same day it go gold some warez group probably release it and i don't think they can keep it quite.

what does it mean when it goes gold?

When the finished game is burned onto a Master CD (which used to be gold). That master copy is burned thousands of times, which are the Cds sold in stores. Basically it means its ready for mass production,

They print/write/burn all CD's and boxes and ship them a cuple of days later.

Edit: another guy was before me. :O (i can't delete the post) :(

Now here is a thought.Since HL2 will be available over steam for download,It would be reasonable to assume that they could in theory start offering it for DL once it goes gold since there is no pressing, packaging or shipping to deal with.Hmmm

No that will DEFINATLY cause Vivendi to :flame:

i bet they sell many more copies through steam if they release on steam first. It would be a good way to get people onto steam, but i doubt this will happen. Plus 3 cds over steam is for most a day at least of downloading.

That wont happen, Vivendi-Universal wouldnt be so dumb as to let that happen.

Replace the word "reasonable" with the words "wishful thinking" and you're absolutely right. Alternatively, replace the words "wishful thinking" with the words "a breach of contract"

As other people said, that'd piss Vivendi off big-time, but releasing entire games over the internet directly via the developers does raise some interesting issues as to whether publishers could be rendered uselss in the future.

if not gold in 13th - 15sep
they could still release it on steam sept 30
and in stores a day or 2 after, if so that would be real sad ;(

now imagine this:

as a response to all the annoying e-mails Gabe has gotten thru the last month or two. people purchasing HL2 via steam will get the download when the game goes gold 13-18sep.(or whatever) but the content will be locked untill 30sep. hahaha that would be cruel!

honestly though it might make some sense for them to make pre-downloads like with the videos so that the steam servers won't get brought to their knees on sep.30th. then again...maybe nobody will buy it thru steam.

getting it thourgh steam will mean the warez versions will be avaible asap. That completely defeats the whole point of getting the original copy. I dont have steam and i dont use warez but a lot of other people do. Even if they dont get the cd key right they will still be able to play the main campaign. And i bet the servers (that run steam) as said in another download will be brought to their knees, because this is not the only thing people will be downloading

Even if people warez the Steam HL2 Gcache, you still need Steam to auth you as owning HL2 to play, so there's no point.

Also, they'll probably encrypt the pre-download, not to mention that the HL2 binary expects to use the Steam filesystem to load the game, meaning a simple rip of the files out of the cache wouldn't work (and when I say simple i mean very very hard, a rip on the scale that HL2 would require would take ages).

The only real way to warez it would be to reverse-engineer the Steam Filesystem and all the other interfaces HL2 has into Steam to allow all the files to be loaded in plain from the normal filesystem and rip all the game data perfectly from the cache, and this discounts the possiblity of encryption on the cache. This isn't exactly a simple job.

Seriouslly, if you were to download it via Steam, wouldn't it be 1 or 2 GB +? Especially being you'll have practically hundreds of thousands downloading it at once, the server will lag. You could have gone out, bought it, installed and played it and you'd probably only be like 77% done downloading.

Nice signature you moron, what are you blind ?

No, I imported the sig from another board I post on which uses different code.

You, however, appear to be a complete ****

Have a nice day.

Heheh, publishers becoming obselete would be quite interesting. On one hand, developers can try to get a lot more creativity and uniqueness into their titles. On the other hand, publishers do provide funding to allow big-budget games.

hmm.....
