Where will the option to download HL2 be in steam?

If anyone DLs HL2 I hope they have a seperate server or 2 (preferably new servers) specific for it. And why would anyone want to DL it? I don't get this, it takes ages to DL, especially from Steam and you don't have a hard copy of it so you can't install it again without downloading it, unless you write it to CD, in which case, why not just buy it, get a better looking CD and all the stuff with it.

HL2 could be pre-cached before release ;)

That way, when you buy, you would only have to download a little extra to 'activate' your copy.

Maybe..

If I use Steam to download Half Life 2, is the £9.99 subscription indefinite? Or will it only charge me until I have paid the equivalent of the average retail version? My apologies if this has been explained elsewhere, but I'm still not sure :s

It's for as long as you want to use Half-Life 2, think about it as renting the game.

But there's an option to just purchase the game over Steam, and then it would be yours forever as long as you download it.

Once they get the bugs sorted out over Steam, all you'll have to do is get the first level, then you can start playing while it downloads the rest. And you can just leave it downloading if you stop playing. So, the download option isn't as bad as you think.

Not to mention that by the time it gets to HL2 launch, the load on Steam should have died down some and Valve would have laid on a LOT more Steam Content Servers so it will download pretty damn quickly.
