Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

How do I dig out the sound files (specifically, dialogue) so I can play them? Where are they, and/or what do I need to extract them? (Or, alternatively, if someone can point me to an online source, that'd be just as good. I tried entering "npc_speakall" in the console, but it made the game crash.)

They are compressed into the .gcf file in your steam apps.

Download GCFscape to extract them.

source sounds.gcf is where Half-Life 2's sounds are stored.

[1]: Download GCFScape.

[2]: If you don't have the .NET Framework installed (you know this is the case if GCFScape won't run after you install it), you must download and install that too (from the same site).

[3]: Run GCFScape.

[4]: Select File, then Open. Select the file source sounds.gcf in your 'SteamApps' folder, as this is where the audio is located.

[5]: Navigate through the folder hl2 and then from there expand the folder sound, locate the folder vo and after right-clicking on it, select Extract if you want to properly grab it on your Hard drive.

[6]: Close GCFScape.

[7]: Navigate to the folder where you extracted the files.

[8]: Enjoy your Half-Life 2 music, dialogue or sound effects.
