So, before this year is out, we will have laid the current generation of consoles to rest, replaced by the newer models that are unsuprisingly more powerful. Just because a console is newer, it does not make the previous generation any less important.

So, which console do you think demands the most respect in terms of what it brought to the gaming community?

Please remember that this is not which console is the most powerful, or which has the best games, but which earns the most respect for what it brought to us gamers.

Personally I think the Playstation 1 was a revolution, by sheer numbers alone. Closely followed by the original NES.

Its close between Sega and Nintendo I'd say, and both for the same reason. They've never been afraid to innovate like crazy, but know how to endow their games with that classic appeal.

I'm gonna go with the Gamecube just because Nintendo's still fighting the good fight. It's not often that a console comes along that's affordable, durable, and offers an incredible number of good games that can be played and enjoyed by everyone.

N64, because it's set the standard for modern console gaming, had some great games with it too.

Or, Dreamcast because it was the 1st console which allowed online gaming.

The DC for me. It was almost too revolutionary for it's time. Some of the games on it were amazing, like Seaman I love all that weird sheet.

Tough one - it's between the SNES and N64 imo. In terms of innovation and influencing the way we play games today no one has done as much as Nintendo (or even begins to get slightly close) when it comes to harware and software.

Sega come in second. Their hardware has never shook the world, but they're responsible for some of the best and most creative games ever :)

my vote goes to nintendo 64

I remenber when I was a kid I allways wanted a n64 and was very desired, but even if I get a playstation 1 that is special for me too, the n64 will allways keep in my memory when I get serious in gaming

The original NES deserves all our respect if only for the fact that it kickstarted home gaming and made it possible for all those other consoles to even exist. The video game home entertainment industry was all but dead until the NES came along. Innovation and hardware mean little if you don't have an industry to support it, and without the NES it's hard to say that we'd be where we are now with games.

dont want to offend but why the xbox?

the only reason I see for the xbox on be on the list of most respected is cuz is the frist console whit a hardisk, that was a dream for every console player that hav to buy a memory card or something like that

The Xbox deserves a mention for Xbox live alone. Quite simply, Xbox Live is excellent - and proof that not only does console gaming work well online, but also that in a few areas it puts online pc gaming to shame.

It's the start of things to come :)

The polls are influenced by peoples personal experiences with the consoles, so I added every console on there.

I think the Xbox was pretty revolutionary because it was built around an x86 cpu and used a Direct3D graphics chip from nVidia. It was basically a minature PC built for gaming - this is a trend that is merging consoles with PCs - a trend that is growing with the next generation of consoles, that are merely souped-up PCs in a box.

No other console before the Xbox can claim to have been able to run Linux straight out of the box.

I don't think the Xbox deserves to win the poll though - at the end of the day it wasn't anything spectacular alongside the PS2.

I still think the original Playstation deserves the vote. If you stopped random people in the street and asked them what the first name that popped into their head was when you mentioned Consoles, I bet you that 90% of people would say Playstation. At the end of the day, that's what gets respect... Popularity.

Respect from the average consumer - or respect from the industry and discerning gamer?

Nintendo are the most respected in the business - fact. Like it or not.

I say Playstation or SNES. Tough call. PS has FFVII and all other old FF games remade and some other badass rpgs.

N64 or Neo Geo. Never owned a NeoGeo but had an emulator once and the games totally rocked. Way too japanese but they had the best fighting games, and they had Metal Slug :E

Wow, you're like a one-eyed Carlton supporter. Anyway, I forgot about the NeoGeo, to think they still make games on the same hardware that was released like 15 years ago is amazing. Look no further than Mark of the Wolves to see how far developers can go with pushing the boundaries of old hardware.

Nope - that's just the way it is. Doesn't make them 'the best' though.

I remember spending a year doing a film degree. So many hours were spent studying movies and directors that I considered (along with many fellow students) to be complete shite. We couldn't deny the impact they'd had on the business though, and the techniques they'd pionered. Like them or not, there's a reason why these are the most most respected and studied directors there have been. It's the same with Nintendo (name another company that has done as much in terms or hardware and software over the years)

I know this one, it was on Double Jeopardy last night........gimme a sec....nope nothing

Wait - Atari. They pretty much started it all didn't they, but now they dont make any great games like Nintendo still does, but still they're the only ones i can think of

Dreamcast for having the best controller ever. And those gorgeous memory sticks...

Nintendo. Sega used to be good, not so much anymore. Rather than revive a beloved franchise and/or create a new innovative one, they cram crap like sonic down our throats. Sonic used to be good, but was too overused and eventually lost his luster. Hell in the newer games, they're not even using him right.

and for the Xbox, I really don't like the fact that they made a "PC Console". Though i love PC games, I see PC games as a whole diffrent experience than consoles. If you merge them, theres no real point in consoles for me anymore.

I think the Pc Console is best!
Am I talking about xbox?
NO.

There was an actual Pc Console made folks! A Pc that would play PC Games aswell as some of the bigger mods. It was a console to ^_^.
I forgot who made it but alienware had backed it and sold there own version.

How?

What kinda games did it play? I doubt they made games specially for it and if they supported games from other consoles, they'd be sodomized with lawsuits

I rmember a pc that came out with e Genesis in oneof the bays - that was pretty neat :)

I voted for psx, but now that I think about it, it would be the dreamcast.
Basicly when it came out sega just forcusd on making beautifull games, all other consoles were wel marketed, but on the dreamcats, almost every game that came on it got 9+ score. After that it would have to be the psx, it just revolutionized gaming, matured it.
After that Gamecube, it is powerfull, it is cheap, it has got great games,it is by far the best nextgen console.

The worst would be the N64, such a backwards console, made for people with three hands, beaten in almost every field by it's rivals, not designed with teh consumer in mind, not very versitile just suited for nintendo own games.

PS2, from the beginning a way over priced peice of shit, but at least versitile.

I'd say Sony Playstation. It has brought many of the best games to the table, like GT, GTA, MGS, 4 amazing FF's, Resident Evil and many more...while it may not be more loved than the SNES it certaintly puts every other console to shame in terms of the games it brought to us over the years.

You mean by taking it apart, etc. and installing it, right? Sony had a Linux kit (bundled with the PS2 hardrive, network adapter, and keyboard and mouse) made specifically for the PS2 several months before the Xbox even came out.

I voted for the PS2, it can play the most games of any console, and is the most popular by far.

Most definitely not X-Box or Gamecube.

PS2, PSX, N64 (for games, certainly not for control), and retro nintendo and sega all have bids.

Dunno what you guys have got against the N64 controller. It was certainly the best joypad out at the time.

(imagine playing Zelda OoT, Mario 64, or Golden Eye on the psx pad)

Don't start me on the dual shock :/

What was bad about it? Nothing at all, it was and still is the most user friendly controller to date. I reckon you're in the minority thinking it sucks :p The N64 controller was horrible to hold and the analog was just...meh!.

And the fact that the analog got dirty, wore out and turned to shit after a couple months didn't help either. I must have went through 8 controllers for the n64. I've still got my dual shocks though and they're still just as good as the day I bought em.

Just for kicks though, the Sega Genesis controllers pwned in the pre-analog days.

Completely agreed.

Yeah Warbie I can play Mario 64 on an Axispad, and Zelda OoT on me Axispad that has overall the same layout as the Ps1\Ps2 pad.

Played amazing. I really did love it. Right Joystick for camera(C-Buttons), left for moving around & things. Worked Real Real well.
I mean overall I got the controls set up so they played better than the N64 ones. Though I will admit I did love the N64 controller ^_^. Yeah it did wear out kinda fast..but hehe we played it non stop... The N64 Controller did have a nice set up.

N64, owned and played that console the most, and was the last console I played hardcore before I got into PC gaming. Since then, I owned and gamed on PS1, PS2, Xbox, and GC and that console IMO was the funnest. Ahead of it's time. One of the best controllers, and Golden Eye, and Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora's mask are among my top 10 games of all time.
