which processor (AMD or Intel) would be much better for high performance gaming?
also, which of the two provides a better price to performance ration?

1st question.

the simple awsner is....there isnt one....... and anyone who tells you differant is either

a. a fanboy

b. lying

c. doesnt know what there talking about.

2nd question.

Again ..you cant say one brand always has a better bang for your buck ratio than the other.

It comes down to comparing two specific cpus.

As it stands right now

low end cpus- AMD wins
midrange cpus- Intel wins
high end cpus- pretty close...with the nod going to AMD.

with plenty of exceptions im sure

A better strategy than building up preconceptions that one is better than the other.....figure out what you want to spend ..and go from there.

i guess what you mean by high performance is getting good fps. you can get good fps on a very midrange cpu, maybe a Athlon 2500+ (which will run you around 90 bucks). generally, you will get a better price to performance ratio with an AMD cpu.

if you want us to recommend a good cpu for you, tell us what your price range is.

edit: though frankly right now the 2 bleeding edge CPU's are the pentium IV 3.2EE ghz (which will run you about 900-1000 bucks) and... probably the AMD FX-51, which will run you a cool 800, neither of these are worth it

but for those prices i would suggest a A64 3000+ or 3200+

eh go for midrange cpu, i'd say. that'll last PLENTY long, besides, there are other factors in performance like, ram, motherboard, video card, etc...

yeah, midrange cpu, plenty of ram, and a good graphics card will set you up for quite awhile for all your gaming needs.

Just about any decent CPU will do very will with a 300$ gfx card.
Athlon XP's
P4 800FSB
Athlon 64 cores are a big jump up from the XP's. Games love that built-in memory controller. ;)

I know which one I would get but which one is best for you may be totally different.
Upgrading to the next GFX card will be a bigger improvment than upgrading to the next CPU model for the most part.
The only exceptions I know of would be maybe choosing a A64 3000+/3200+ over a Athlon XP 3000+/3200+.
Or
Choosing a P4 3ghz/3.2ghz (Northwood) with 800FSB over a P4 3.06ghz 533 FSB.

IMO when getting a P4, I would look for the C's.
P4 2.4c / P4 2.6c / P4 2.8c / P4 3.0c / p4 3.2c
Not the E's....2.8e (Prescott). OoOo. Too hot, don't touch.

hmm....right now i think i'm leaning more towards the AMD cpu's. i'm kinda thinking of waiting for the next generation of Intel cpu's though (socket 775? something like that).

i heard they'll be introduced at Cebit and i wasn't thinking of building a new comp 'til around the end of the year anyway.

Pretty much it's hard to say which is better, they're both designed for gaming and the both do very well on it. Just avoid celerons, definately not made for gaming. Everyone else has pretty much hit it on the head.

I'll put it like this, I got a AMD Athlon XP 2200+, also have a 2600+ for my gaming pc but I won't get into that, it would be pwnij, anyways as I was saying the 2200+, 512 mb ddr ram, and geforce 4 mx440 beats my cuz's p4 2.56ghz,512mb rdram, geforce mx440(same company video cards him and mine are), my fps are hellalot better and don't lag when hosting lan servers. This may be due, since he is a complete moron when coming to pc's, both of his are pathetic, but still he should run me over in games, like nothing...I got the 2600+, geforce 4 fx5600, 512ddr ram, and that makes his pc, look like my 500mhz celeron, I kid you not, thats how horrible his pc's are....

there is a performance gap between the athlon xp and the p4"B"

as asus said...if he went with intel he would want a "c" wich are every bit as good if not better than an athlon xp.

I would say Pentium, but then you'd have to call me a fanboy.
AMD's win on cost though hands-down.

thats not entirely true. a pentium 4XCghz would make a good gaming machine, and they are good processors. though im a bit of an amd fanboy.

though in my opinion if you buy that processor youd be better spent to just buy a 64bit processor, and dominate any/most mid and upper range intel processors. just my opinion.
