I have a simple question as I read my PCGamer...

Who will have more fun playing HL2, the people who dont keep up with it and just pick it up one day from the computer store, or the people like us who have been drueling over every screenshot?

Short sweet and to the point.

very good topic, I believe it's us the diehard fans who will truly enjoy getting out hands on the precious game... that is if the game is indeed worthy of our drooling

You could argue that people who dont know what to expect might think its more enjoyable but.....

Hype can be a bad thing but most of the time it only sweetens the deal.

i know before i joined the community i wasnt even going to get Hl2, i saw the preview and flicked through it without much care....

once i read these forums for a wee while though i began to realise just how ground breaking HL2 is/will be.

the people who dont know anything about the game will enjoy it more, all of you have hyped the game so much for yourselves it'll never live up to it...

on the other hand, we know about the physics and stuff so we might jump into the game and have a better grasp on whats happening and we'll be able to play the game in interesting ways, whereas people who just play fps games will just play it like a normal game and perhaps not get into the physics so much on their first play through.

but i still think the people who just happen to pick it up will enjoy it more.

ya.......what he said

I think the people who don't go to HL2 message boards and don't get caught up in the hype are gonna have a more enjoyable time. It's cool to look forward to a game and expect it to kick ass, but jeez some people here talk about the game like it's the second coming. And that's just completely wrong, we all know the second coming will be Team Fortress 2 :p

But seriously, some people are hyping it up so much that I wouldn't be suprised if they were a bit disappointed by the final product. Then again maybe all of that excitement they hold for the game will make the experience that much better. It all depends on the person.

I'll have more fun playing HL2! Ha..hahahaha..
no, but seriously, I know we've hyped it up alot, but I was this hyped when the game got stolen, and the rather underwhelming stolen build was as good as I had hoped.. the final game can only be better :)

OK nice posts suckas...

I guess Ill voice my opinion since i started this mutha*ucka!

I think us, the people lickin every morsel off our funky ass plates of HL2 goody goodness wiull enjoy it, due to the simple fact that we know hw great the game will be, and we will be better judges of how groundbreaking each groundbreaking momment is.

I am a self proclaimed fanboy who is extremely easily pleased, i have never been dissapointed by a screenshot or video of this game, i still play hl1, i think ill enjoy it to the point of insanity.

the people who buy it and carry on playing it for another 5 years, until HL3 comes out.

oh oops, I mean us... err the die hards :)

It is the second coming, thats why they call is Half-Life 2 :)

Seriousely though, this is the type of game that creates fans, so it'll probably be getting very busy once the game is released.

hmm real fans

i mean if i didn't play hl and i knew about hl2 i would go and get hl and play it to the full before i play hl2

Alot of people are gonna get this game that played through Half-Life, but know barely anything about the sequel, and don't post on HL2 messageboards, and I would classify them as real fans.

true

but if you was a person who played through half life and you knew half life 2 was coming out soon and there are new pics and new movies. MAN i dont know if i could sit on my ass and not read look or watch new things before release! hehehe

Although im not coming to any hl2 forum or site if the game is released to the US first

I don't think this question can really be answered. I mean, I only learned of HL1 through a friend showing me TFC (and playing it at his house, it was great, we had a game where I'd work the mouse and he'd do the keyboard, lots of laughs). I got HL just to get TFC, but then started the game and LOVED IT! Now I'm one of these fanboys waiting anxiously for anything HL2 related.

I relate this tale, because while I am sure some fanboys who take HL2 will LOVE it, some will think it OK, while others will just hate Valve for something. The same will be said for those who get HL2 without having tried HL1 or who aren't fanboys. Some will become fanboys, some will think it cool, while some will think it sucks. Probably more of us who are awaiting it will be in the "love it" category than the public, but who knows, this time around HL2 is HUGE, whereas HL1 didn't have this publicity (at least that I saw).

Well we all know that wishing something can be more fun then getting the thing you want. But I think fans will just explode from the bliss when they get their hands on the game.

I concur.

I know HL2 will meet my expectations becuase.

#1. the stolen build was rather fun.

#2. you could hardly describe me as a Valve fan boy, quite the opposite realy....

i base my hype on what ive seen, and boy.... me likey what ive seen.

You got that right. :) But wouldn't it be better if HL2 would have exceeded your expectations?

I'd put my outlook on it similar to Dougy's then. I'm not on the level of some of the Half-Life 2 fanboys here (no offense to them), but I definately love the hell out of Half-Life, and liked alot of what I saw when I played er...watched the HL2 demos and it's got me excited. I'm just cautious when it comes to release dates, I don't expect the game any earlier than September. Even if there is information that suggests the contrary, I don't care. That way, if it does hit in September, I wouldn't have been let down, but if it releases sooner, than my head can explode in suprise and excitement.

the people that are die hard fans that manage to completely avoid ALL info will enjoy it the most.

Imagion your reaction if you didn't know what a strider was, or the antlions, or the DX9 effects, etc.

myself, I'm in between...I read up on the engine, and attempt to avoid all new HL2 specific info. (All I have is last years E3 vids, not going to watch the new ones)

I'm considering not watching the new E3 footage, but I don't know if I will be able to resist it. As lame as it sounds, I really don't know.

I remember seeing the strider for the first time in the E3 vid and then - that cannon blow. I just went: "What the f***?!?!?!"

It's not that hard to imagine, because last year before E3 nobody really knew what valve was upto. Yes, it's only been a year since we know of the existence of HL2!
Before the reports i was really into all the D3 info thinking that it would be the best game yet. Then came some vague info about HL2, but nothing concrete, and i dismissed it thinking "they'll never repeat the success of HL1" and went back to obsessing over D3.

Then came E3 and the legendary "will this run on my 486" shakycam.

needless to say I haven't wasted anymore time on D3

Your loss, you can always play and love both ya know

Don't get me wrong, i'll still buy D3. However, the facts to date lead me to the conclusion that D3 cannot hold a candle to HL2 in the gameplay category.
I really get the idea that ID is using D3 to get it's engine sold to the most bidders, a sort of public tech demo. I think the game itself will be somewhat dissapointing (although the mod community will prolly jump on it, and fix some of carmack's mistakes). Plus 4 player multiplayer? Gimme a break.

D3: tollerate
HL2: love :)

exactly. I'll tolerate D3 by ignoring it. Yea. Zombie shooting action with no plot! WHEEE!!!

One of my buddies has actually managed to avoid ALL HL2 info. he watched the traptown vid, and only most of it. (Not the zombie part). sooo...he's in for a shock. :D

That's cool I guess. I personally can't wait to play Doom3. It's going to be a more slower paced, horror style game so it and HL2 should be two rather different FPS experiences. As for the multiplayer, Id has already said it's moddable up to 16 if the community should so decide to change it (and they most likely will). I like the small amount, dunno about anyone else but I'm getting burnt out on the massive 32/64 player matches. I'll play HL2 for the large-scale multiplay, and Doom3 for the smaller, more personal deathmatches. It's the best of both worlds :)

Doubt it. Big map size + highly optimized engine + vehicles = definate large-scale multiplayer. There may be a few smaller deathmatch maps or something like UT has but I'd say it's a certainty that we'll be seeing some nice, huge maps.

i think that the people that can utilize the versatility of the gameplay style in hl2 will have the best experiences. i think the average "oh this game could be fun, let me buy this one" crowd will try to play it like a normal fps, but then ... maybe the game tutorial or some of the levels will be disigned specifically to make people understand how to do "tricks" in the game with physics or what have you. kinda like in hl, the scientists explaining some things to you here and there. but ... meh, hmm i think it'll be one of those games that stands out from the pack for its greatness because it's as fun for newbie and vet alike...

edit: oh, and i'm hoping the map sizes vary. i love playing some of the small more personal games(especially in cs... like 10 ppl or less playing, clan match style) but i also love vast open battles like in BF 1942 & desert combat... i hope we're pleasantly surprised with the MP portion of the game, friendly... :):):):):):):):)

i think u touched on something there.

there are also those of us (like me :E ) who are diehard fans who chose not to download any stolen builds.. and limited themselves from viewing screen shots.. i think these pple will enjoy it just as much as pple who know nothing about HL2 and just buy the game.

I agree with Dr.Freeman. Although Xtasy0 also has a good point. I'm just gonna be so damn excited to get the game i doubt it will disappoint me much. Not that im saying its gonna be the best game ever, its just that everything i've read and all says its got alot more to offer then other games. Hopefully it will.

I don't really care about the hype, two things that I will be interested in.

HL2 storyline
HL2 SDK

The physics is there so that we can truly call the game

Half-Life2: 1001 ways to die

Personally I've never seen or played a single second of any half life game or mod ever in my whole life. I haven't looked at a single HL2 video. I've seen some screens, pretty unimpressive, but most screenshots are I guess.

I can't wait to see what all this hype is over. To be honest I doubt it's worth it, but that's just my pessimistic attitude shining through. I was excited to play the new "next-gen" games with all the new graphics techniques.

Well the new graphic techiniques, mainly the dx9 stuff, aren't new anymore. I've seen them in action already and while neat to see at first have become old news. So to me personally HL2 is just another game coming out.

Hopefully this amazing storyline everyone keeps talking about will be enough.

I think the people who have been looking forward to this game for so long will have the most fun. For example, when I make plans with a couple of friends to go paintballing or whatever a week in advance, I will have more fun because of the expectations and we talk about it and stuff. Once we just decided to go paintballing -right now-.. it was fun, but felt like no one was "prepared" for it and just didn't have the exitement when we make plans in advance.

If you catch my drift ;)
