That's a generalisation, and it will not be tolerated.

Yes, because everyone feels so safe when they dont know where their money is.

Identity theft is a pretty big thing over here, so thats probably why a lot of people are hesitant to send such important information over the internet.

HAHAHAH AEMRICANS R DUM LOLZ HAHAH

Identity theft isn't so small over here.

I guess, unlike you guys, we enjoy our identity to be ours and ours alone. I'd be worried if I didn't know where my shit was going. It's like giving your wallet to a stranger and saying "make sure you bring it back full of everything it has."

another "amerika sux" thread....

getting very old

What are you talking about? Making negative generalizations about the American public NEVER gets old.

Speaking of Identity Theft in the states, have any of you seen those commercials where that CEO guy of this one identity theft protection company plasters his social security number all over the TV, on the side of trucks and stuff?

It's hilarious that even he had his identity stolen. What a fool for being so confident.

I checked that on the Google to see if it was true and as far as I could find Todd Davis hasn't had his identity stolen.

Because they were allied with Germany?
As fas as I know the swastika was used in the finnish airforce, before Germany started using it. Later it was used by Germany and Finland allied with Germany and blah blah.

Let Nkem Owo of Nigeria tell you a thing or two about advance fee fr--- I mean wire transfer.

Upon say I get sense
Poverty no good at all, no
Na im make I join this business
419 no be thief, its just a game
Everybody dey play am

Chorus
National Airport na me get am
National Stadium na me build am
President na my sister brother
You be the mugu, I be the master
Oyinbo I go chop your dollar, I go take your money dissapear
419 is just a game, you are the loser I am the winner
The refinery na me get am,
The contract, na you I go give am
But you go pay me small money make I bring am
you be the mugu, I be the master… na me be the master ooo!!!!

When Oyinbo play wayo, them go say na new style
When country man do im own, them go de shout bring am, kill am, die!
Oyinbo people greedy, I say them greedy

Oyinbo means white by the way.

It was also the emblem for one of the American infantry divisions at the start of the war

The swastika was considered a good luck symbol, before Hitler copied it.

You can find others easily by just typing in "Todd Davis Identity Stolen" in a search engine.

You may have seen the ads around for LifeLock, they provide identity theft protection. The CEO, Todd Jones, publishes his Social Security number on LifeLock’s web site and in the company’s TV commercials to demonstrate how effective the company is in protecting the identity of its customers.

Someone took out a $500 loan in his name. However, the man who stole the identity of LifeLock co-founder Todd Davis won’t face criminal charges, police say, because LifeLock stepped in before the police could finish investigating the crime and coerced the suspect into making a videotaped confession that isn’t admissible in court.

“They went to his house with a camera crew and they yelled at him and browbeat him into signing a confession that they had already typed out,” Moore said.

The man told police he was informed that if he did not sign the confession and agree to do community service, police would be coming to arrest him.

The man acknowledged illegally obtaining the loan and said he did it because he was desperate. The man also admitted that he got Davis’ Social Security number from LifeLock’s Web site, Moore said.

Though they say Todd Jones, which is wrong. It is Todd Davis

Q: Why are Americans afraid of wire transfers?
A:
Transfers in the United States are subject to monitoring by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC. OFAC monitors information provided in the text of the wire to determine if money is being transferred to terrorist organizations or countries or entities currently under sanction by the United States government. If a financial institution suspects that funds are being sent from or to one of these entities, they must block the transfer and freeze the funds.

Should answer your question.

Q: why are they afraid of giving someone their bank number?
A: Because a number of bad things can happen to stupid people who just throw that around.

For one, people can track down what organization issued that number and can subsequently spy on your activity concerning what you do with that Branch of Bank. They can also illegaly acquire information about you or your account, and make illegal transfers or withdrawals. Possibly, if they're that stupid and power hungry, they can confront you directly and try to rob you.

Q:Why do they think that they are "insecure" because you don't know where the money is going?
A: They're insecure for a number of reasons, just like you should be: For one, you're money can be electronically transfered to the wrong person. That sometimes can be you're fault, they're fault, or the banks fault.

However, it also can be transferred to or intercepted by an illegal entity, such as a scammer, criminal, or terrorist. Funding these people, incidentally, can be a big problem for you especially if the government suspects you of doing it voluntarily. If it's proven to be accidental, it still means that you're funds have been issued now to someone who plans on using to build another Katyusha launcher in Palestine.

You should always be cautious with your money. Americans are'nt bad or silly for doing this, nethire deserving of "silly criticsms".

You couldn't be that naive, could you?

I could be a terrorist owning a store, and by buying stuff from the store you're directly funding terrorism.
There's a border between security and paranoia, and your theory crossed that border only to be secure, but lacking a bit in life.

Giving your bank-details is risky, identity theft is a real problem. I remember 3 specific incidents where someone called my parents & I picked up the phone and they asked for bank-account details, claiming we won something, or were supposed to get some money back, or claiming to be with some bank.

When I pressured them for their contact information, saying I needed to look them up then call them back directly, they tried to skirt the issue, taking about unrelated stuff. Not to mention, their no-so-perfect use of English made it more suspicious.

I don't know what someone can do with just your name and bank account information (although that info is usually contained on a check), but I've witnessed scammers trying to get that info. I guess maybe the only thing missing was a social security number. That reminds me, I've always wondered about putting your SSN on job applications, I've usually skipped that line unless they're ready to hire me though.

Just FYI, sending a cheque contains even MORE information that in a wire. A cheque contains all your bank info AND your signature. In a wire only your bank info is sent, and this is only bank to bank. And your post is even easier to intercept than a wire, to intercept a wire you've got to hack into the banks secure network but to intercept a check? Just steal the mail and mailboxes don't have the same security as internet servers, atleast ours don't (don't know about the states). And what if that cheque gets missing in the post? The probability of a cheque getting lost in the mail is higher than a packet on the net getting missing. Have you ever posted a post on hl2.net with it not appearing? I've NEVER ever heard of a wire transfer gettin relayd "to the wrong person" unless the idiot sender typed the wrong account number or something. Hell I know my account number by heart. Account numbers are like IP adresses, your wire is sent to that account, there is no one putting the money into an account a computer does it. No one can do anything more with a bank account number than they can with your name or your address. If you are that paranoid about security go live in a cave, burn your birth certificate and buy gold teeth with your money, then no one can steal it!
