What is the point of seeing your feet?

Honestly why do you want to see your feet.. .what on earth does it add to the gaming experience to justify the waste of resources?

That is the worst comeback I have seen in a long, long time.

In my opinion, we are nowhere near being able to make feet look and act realistically in-game, so no I wouldnt prefer them.

Hands when picking stuff up would be nice, but again, too complicated. I was impressed with the getting-HEV-suit animation though. Movable hands would allow for the best HL2 mod though: Gordon Macarena!

Wow.... that's a stupid question.
Why do you want to see your arms?
Why do you want to see your weapon? I mean it just blocks your screen, you have your ammo display and a crosshair, why would game developers spend time on making weapon models?

You know, there is that little thing called realism. When I am standing and look down I see my own feet. So unless the player is controlling a floating weapon with a pair of arms attached to it I expect the feet to be there.

You see the weapon to shoot. You see the arm thats holding the gun. Play without them. You can't. (Well, it'd look crap without the arm, but you could play. Thing is, you don't need to look at your feet)

You played Hl2? Then you'll know you can get through without looking at your feet or them being there for that matter. Its pretty trivial.

Last I checked, Valve wanted you to be Gordon Freeman while playing the game. So, you want to see Freeeman's feet while playing? Look down at the floor. It's all there.

Valve doesn't show gordons legs for the same reason they dont have his voice, or his shadow, or his reflection. It's for immersion purposes. After just having played FEAR, which had player legs and shadows, I would have to agree with their reasoning. Putting awkward legs that are controlled by WASD movements completley ruins immersion. It just makes me feel like I'm controlling a large, awkward corpse. (Alot like controlling the hand was in Tresspasser) The only game I can think of that seemed to get it right was Operation Flashpoint, which used the entire player model and based a camera in the eyes, meaning you could see your entire body, and the camera was affected realistically by the player's movements. However, again, this seemed to make movement very awkward and strange.

Controlling a player in an FPS shouldn't be like running around in real life, it should be more like you're in a dream, having seamless control over a floating representation of you. It makes you feel more connected, more part of the world.

Why they didn't let you see his feet:My version

They didn't let you see the feet because if you saw the model from a more distant perspective(with a cheat,I can't recall which)it's only a person without any textures(duh!)

I'm not one to criticize usually....
However, I care far more about gameplay than graphics. I'm sorry. You ever wondered why Nintendo is still alive? Its not cause of little kids. Its because of 30 year olds, who just want to play games.
Seeing feet makes no real difference in gameplay at all. There abscene would probably be for the better. I'm not playing a FPS FOR LEGS!!!!!!!!!
Hell, I play Doom!!! I hated Doom 3. Doom was great though. It wasn't about graphics. I love it because of gameplay. Same goes for Halflife. Honestly, I'm probably too mature for my age, but people....please. Graphics are not a game.

lazy programers, and stop with "to_make_you_feel_like_Gordon" excuses mr Newell

You go model and program feet and legs then.

Honestly, I know extremely basic C++ programming. Its hard as hell. Just to make a program to calculate the quadratic formula. Most of the time, its debugging it, so that certain values don't cause incorrect answers. And then to see, non-programmers go, "oh thats so easy" pisses me off. Honestly. GO to steam. Open the Source SDK. Create a mod called, "feet mod". Build a mod with all the HL2 singleplayer missions, and add in legs and feet. That work all the time. And match the HEV suit model. Then come talk to me.

yes, programming is very much a pain in the ass. just a seemingly small and simple thing can take pages and pages of code. Laziness is not the reason for you not having legs, the reason is because it's a completly pointless and an utterly horrible idea.

While the feet tend to be an annoying feature, I feel that shadows and reflections are not. While playing F.E.A.R., when I stepping past some lights, and my shadow jumped onto the wall, it made me jump, until I realised that it was just my shadow. The feet, however, did seem clumsy. Unless programmers can get that feature looking correct, they should stay away from it.

Ive noticed over the time I have played FPS's (From which when I Was Like 6 or 7 "Turok -N64, 007, ect.) till now (HL2 and Halo 2), that barely ANY FPS's let you see your other parts of your body except your arms. The only ones that come to mind that actually did was Halo 2 and Chronicles Of Riddick. Why is that? Is it really that hard to have a model that you can see when you look down? Because I find that it ruins the experience when you look down and see a shadow hovering in mid air under a floating pair of arms. Is there a specific reason for this or is it just lazinees?

Becaue the legs and feet look like shit. Simple as
It doesnt matter how good the graphics are, if your staring at a monitor the legs just dont seem real. If you look down normally, you can see most of your body.

WHO DARES DISTURB MY SLUMBER?!?

Well, HL2 is suppsed to be realistic. And in real life, I certainly can't see my own feet. Although that might be because I'm actually a floating Zombie Master Floater Zombie.

It's the same reason you can't see yourself on cameras. Would be nice to add, but only if they did it right. Otherwise, I don't mind much.

Maybe HL3.

Legs look like shit. They did in Halo, they do in F.E.A.R and they would in Half-Life.

Until an implementation that doesn't look clunky and jerky everytime you strafe comes along, I'm happy as a torso holding a gun, thanks.

Sulkdodds, did you happen to get that quote from anywhere?

:p

lol wtf not many games have it where u have feet that u can see why are u all complaining about it now and are all of you planning to look down and say o yea i can see my feet

Are you crazy!! how could you see your feets in the game. They are probably under your desk. Maybe if you could make a hole through your keyboad and desk you could have a look at your shooes, boots, toes or anything you use to spray a nasty smell around you!!
