Why do we like some tastes and hate others?

This has been bugging me for ages while I eat the crap I get for dinner. Nothing to do with the cooking skills of my parents or the food. It's my body that hates 90% of all the foods that I get. There are very few things I enjoy eating.

But I'm always wondering why I hate the taste of vegetables for example. It's natural and (supposedly) healthy. Why do I hate to eat it? It doesn't make sense. You'd expect evolution would guide us to prefer the taste of fish and vegetables over cookies and chips. I love ketchup and mayonaise, hotdogs, french fries and pizza, but I hate most (if not all) healthy food.

WHY?!?!?

If you eat it, you will get use to it and come to like the food

Cookies and chips have fat and sugar...more rare and useful for the body than the minerals and vitamins and vegatables.

Icecream is the perfect example of what the body really wants.

I freaking hate ice cream. I hate all sorts of candy too. Except for cookies. They rock.

you know when really thinking about it, if you think about why something tastes so good or so horrible, the taste it self becomes so much less impactive, like something is illogical about taste itself.

Steamed cabbage = best thing eva. Not kidding.

idk. Personally I cant stand fish. Idk why. I just can't. Part of me dies inside every time I read how healthy eatting samon or something is for you. Alot of it has to do with what you eat when youre growing up and how much variety you get etc. But there has to be other factors aswell. I wish I liked fish. It smells god awful though.

Maybe you're just whiny. If you are hungry enough, anything edible becomes tasty, and things which are un-edible begin to look really tempting.

I remember seeing an episode of Muppet Babies by Jim Henson ? Hanson? when I was a kid and all the little Muppets were eating this disgusting slosh. BUT Ms. Piggy had a grandiose idea of imagining that the food was ice cream, and Kermit loved the inedible delicatessen as he imagined the slosh transforming to ice cream.

Don't be daft, kermit was a puppet. They have less taste buds than people. Duh.

Too bad Muppet babies were animated...

Haha, just kidding. I'm the same way. I can't stand my mother's cooking.

There's very few foods that I'll refuse to eat, but part of that is probably due to my upbringing. Being that my parents were chinese living Toronto, we ate the typical 'exotic' chinese foods quite often. Don't understand all the hate towards veggies either, it's healthy, tastes fine (great if cooked properly and combined with other foods) and well... makes your shit green. :)

I agree wih you Brick. I practically hate anything that is good for you. I hate onions and most people say they are tasteless or when put in a dish absorb the flavor of the dish but I still don't believe it because it tastes haggard. Only healthy things I'll eat are:

Lettuce (The fresh, crisp, green kind not the haggard old brown stuff that has been sitting in the firdge for 2 years)
Carrots
Corn (Nice on a cob)
Potato (Mashed or roasted only{doesn't include potato things like Fries})
Bananas (Mostly only in Milkshakes [real milkshakes not McDonald's type ones although they're nice too] but sometimes by themselves
Apples (Pretty much only in juice but if I get a nice, cold and crunchy Pink Lady I'll eat it)

Other healthy things I'll eat and don't say they are haggard but I don't like them (They are alright not yum but not yuk)

Peas (Not canned FFS)
Tomato (Red, plump and fresh, if it's been in the fridge or out in the fruit bowl for too long then no thanks)
Grapes (The green, no seed kind)

That's pretty much all.

Compare that to the list of stuff I do like and you'll see what's up:

All meat except fish
Almost all kinds of candy
Pretty much anything ice cream related

Now when you take the above list and split it it'll end up being colossal.Compare that colossal list to the list of the stuff I don't like it'll be miniscule, minute, microscopic.

I hate fish, too, with a passion. but earlier i was pretty blazed and put blue cheese dressing and relish on a fish filet, and it was pretty damn good. youd be surprised what looks and tastes good when you got munchies that bad.

I'm pretty sure half of it's what you get used to... taste for shit like olives, haddock, tofu, spinach etc. usually develops over time. Like beer. When I was young, me and my friends all disliked the taste of beer, but after 6 or 7 years of regular consumption it becomes awesome.

When you come from work and you're really hungry - everything tastes great.

I've drank beer countless times, and still don't have the taste for it. It's just not my thing.

Oh sweet merciful thing! Most vegetables make me gag, actually. Very fussy eater. Fruit's nice though, even though I don't eat it very often, but onions, cabbage, broccoli, mushrooms, tomatoes all that I can't eat. I've tried numerous times cause I wanna please people, just yesterday my grandparents had made some kind of stew with mushrooms in it. I tried to eat it but god it made me feel sick after a single bite...

I heart a lot of stuff. the only stuff I dislike are mussels and certain kinds of fish.
