Will Half-Life 2 use PS 2.0?

Got to hand it to cypher he has pretty much covered all the bases.

Just to derail the thread slightly. There was an issue around this time last year with the Nvidia implentation of PS2.0 running very badly on the 5600 and 5900 cards so Valve recoded hl2 to use ps1.1 in many places instead of PS2 if you were using one of those cards, it was simply to increase framerates and did not effect users of other cards.

That was the main reason for Gabe's statements recommending the Radeon 9800 over the Geforce 5900 however that was a year ago, newer cards are out and more time has been spent on dev and new drivers are out for pretty much every gfx card so it's anyone's guess how things stand now.

Not very useful info unless you have one of the cards in question but it does confirm the presence of PS2 in the game/engine.

nice to have you around, cypher. i feel a little smarter now.

like there is any *NOTICEABLE* differance between ps 2 and ps 3....

and yes, HL2 uses ps2

stupid question:is the beatiful water efect on morrowind ps 2.0?

No, most likely 1.x

Morrowind runs in DX8.1 not DX9.

That water is half beautiful half messed up. I don't know whether I like it or not. Though I can't deny that the ripple effect when you walk in it is pretty cool.

With ps3.0 if it was ever encorporated into HL2, it would be a whole new experience. I dont want to get gunned down in the Hl forums, but go look at the Unreal 3 engine and what ps3.0 will look like. It will be amazing if HL2 ever used it.

what you've seen from u3e is all ps2.0. There was no sm3.0 included when they first showed it.

ironic isn't it

Everything you saw in the Unreal 3 tech demo can be done with DX 9 and PS 2.0. Games have not even begun to tap the actual power of DX 9. However, you need to have some really powerful hardware to fully use DX 9 (which is why Unreal 3 is coming out 3 years from now instead of today).
