what you mean that understoof isn't the correct spelling??? :-P

It could have been some shaders used on those lights too maybe...

Is this somehow not HDR? It certainly resembles the effect.

That's not bloom. That's [what appears to be] a 2D sprite. :p

On a side note, you can have bloom without HDR...it just won't look great. (Cough...Deus Ex 2. Cough.)

Grr won't let me edit the last post.

Well anyways, here's what a couple of HL2 screens, with simulated bloom and high dynamic range...

The second image shows what you possibly could see if you were looking down on the dark ground, and then quickly whurled your head up towards the street ahead. If this was a video, you'd first be close to blinded by the bright sky, then as the auto exposure kicked in, and you'd start to see the strider with clearer detail, and the sky too.

It's exactly like playing out all day on a bright sunny day, then going back to your house. Everything looks dark at first but as your eyes begin to adjust themselves to the new environment.

Yeah, they just applied a HDR effect to the SS.

Nvidia has some examples as well. Link

They won't have it in the game right away, but they will add it in a little later. End of story, thread is done.. bye bye?

It's just a little glare effect that has been around for ages. HDR is not just a glare effect. Others have already described what it does but the result will be that your whole screen will be accurately lit like a photograph (the amount of light, intensity of light and colour of light will affect your picture).
compare:
HDR
and
no HDR

HDR makes the light blend naturally like a photograph while otherwise the colours stand out like a cartoon.
I think that is what it does.

wow, HL2 makes far cry look like zelda wind waker

NEVER EVER trust video from a real world camera for determining a game's graphics. Because the real world has no options to turn of HDR or bump maps. ;)

So essentially what you get from a shaky cam is the game and its graphics, + a mess of "post-processing" added by the camera.

yeah you have a point asus. we shall see in the final version i suppose :)

Mr Redundant. Nothing pisses me off more than someone with no clue stating something wrong as fact. HDR was in the beta. That is a fact. There was a rendering .dll file called dx9_standard_HDR.dll or something similar, and using that to render gave HDR features.

Please get your facts straight before you talk in future.

you are absolutely correct, I have no idea why I took such a pompous attitude (blame it on the delay :p ), please accept my humble appologies.

again, thats simply not my nature... and I feel the fool for saying what I did (as I should).

I now have realized my mistake and actually am quite impressed by the features of HDR, it seems a lot more extensive than I initially gathered it to be.

I agree, Farcry is one hell of an impressive game visiually when all the bells and whistles are cranked to max.
your first screenshot looks to be showing the new PS effects from the nvidia presentation (unless Im crazy) how did you enable those?
the second screenshot doesnt work for me.

Someone will be getting banned very very soon and this whole thread deleted if they don't stop talking about what they've found in the stolen files. Crusader I'm looking in your direction.

Hmmmm!

The only thing that I would like to point out is that as with everything that VALVE is telling us there is a lie that is attached to it. It's true with the release dates as well as the features in the game. Ones is this and then it's changed to something else, so evenutally we might see a game that was revolutionary in graphics and gameplay to sameallcrap thing. Now, don't go telling me that the graphics is nothing compared to gameplay (I acually do belive that) no that's not the issue here. My point is that VALVE is marketing it's game with specific features and dates that it cannot meet in the end! and that in turn is not fair to us all. Stop the lie shit and come tell us like it is TRUTH. God, I do get really tired of hearing this constant bullshit from VALVE!

Fenric search for Half-Life 2 HDR on google. Then call yourself an idiot for looking at me.

Sorry, but I'm not going to cower before you because your a mod even when you're in the wrong.

Edit: Wow, those Far-Cry pics are good! Does the demo use those features? ...it doesn't look that good when I play it. :(

By the way, Mr Redundant:

To get the second pic to work, copy and paste it into your address bar, put a space at the end and press enter. :)

Sorry for double post but I couldn't edit the earlier post.

The leak had HDR as far as I am aware...

Crusader (in response to being told its not in the stolen files said:
I'm afraid it did :)

In the wrong huh? I catch you doing it again your gone, if i catch you insulting other users on this forum your gone, is that clear?

I assumed the HDR was not in the beta since I thought that they were still trying to get it in the game at this point.. didnt make sense, to have it in a build before e32k3 but not in the final shipping version.
(I dont have the beta so I couldnt check on that)
however I did know for a fact that Valve (I think it was Rick Ellis) stated that there was no HDR effects in the E32004 video (which is why I was pretty adamant in my case)
also before, I thought HDR was simply just gamma correction, and Bloom/overbrightening were different effects entirely.
*shrugs* well I know whats potting now, and I appologized for being so short.

Fenric wasnt argueing about HDR Crusader, if anything he would know exactly what it is.. he was saying discussing the LEAK (some people call the hl2 leak the BETA) is illegal and against forum policy.

I know what he's saying Mr Redundant. And I don't have the beta either. :)

Edit: deleted excuses

I am trying not to explain myself in this thread, so I PMed Fenric rather than continue it.

yes, his point was however not where you got your info, or even where he could find the info himself... it was that discussing the info (regardless of source -heh) was in fact against forum policy.

I assumed you didnt understand his point because your response was
"Fenric search for Half-Life 2 HDR on google. Then call yourself an idiot for looking at me. "
so you either thought that he was implying that you had the beta (like he would care) or that he didnt know HDR was in the beta.
