Will Source Support The Athlon64 ?

I was wondering if the Source engine will take advantage of the Athlon64 cpu's ? I know the latest Unreal engine will support it, and the gains are huge like 30% !!

Yes. They have already discussed a 64bit recompile, however, you'd need a 64 bit versions of Windows to run it. Otherwise, HL2 should run very nicely on one :) That chip has amazing FPU capability. As for chip instruction sets like SSE2, etc. Not sure... Probably though.

indeed... but at a $800 pricetag right now for the AthlonFX they are very steep... 20k stock in 3dm2k1 is sweet tho, very nice procs

Is the Athlon64 faster than a Pentium 4?
Ei: let's say they made an Athlon64 at 2.0 Ghz, what that be better(faster)than a Pentium 4 2.0Ghz?

Making programs to take advantage of 64bit cpus isn't that hard, so I don't see why any game from now on won't support them.

yes, higher IPC for the AMDs; also, a P4 2ghz is not a good comparison, most mid-end Athlons (Barton/tbred) already beat out these northwoods ages ago

the Athlon FX released this month is just an Opteron (Sledge Hammer)...940 pin, ECC RAM required, dual-channel on-die mem controller....etc.
the Athlon64 (Clawhammer) being released the 23rd of this month is the 739 pin, non-ECC, and has a single-channel on-die mem controller.
the San Diego core is rumored to be the "true" AthlonFX, will be released Q1-2 next year, doesn't require ECC RAM, has a dual-channel on-die mem controller, and is manufactured using the .9nm process, and will have initial speeds of around 2.6ghz iirc

Is this a question or statement??

From benchmarks I have seen, a P4 3.0ghz and a 1.8ghz AMD64 go head to head. Each one wins different benchmarks.

This is when NOT using 64bit instructions. So it's quite an achievement for a chip that is 1.2ghz 'slower' to keep up neck and neck.

With 64bit programs, well there's a possilbility that it could be a big gain.

But let's take this a little bit further. Does this mean that if AMD introduces the Athlon64 in September, after Microvole has finished tweaking its famous X86-64 operating system, a lowly clocked 64-bit chip, even if it runs at 1.8GHz, say, will outperform a Pentium 4 3.20GHz?

Apparently, the answer to that is yes. And there's another thing. This is probably the reason that AMD will have to wait for the Microsoft OS.

well, I guess we'll need the new OS from M$ before this happens, but impressive nonetheless

You could always switch to a unix/linux dist. :)

If winex ran HL2 half decenlty(hehe), you may get some decent frames with 64bit compilation.

I thought ATi doesn't officially support Linux? so are the unofficial drivers for these cards any good in games ?

We'll have to really wait and see in 2005 or so. That's when the 64-bit OS from Microsoft will come out.(Windows Longhorn,I think).

By then the processors will be affordable for non-professional activities.

doesn't matter too much; I say a 2.6ghz, 11 IPC, higher cache, better mfg. process compared to the latest 90nm debut sounds great; now Intel will have to kick into another gear

Hmm, you know, I heard there would be a 64Bit XP released later this year (for the athlon 64).

No idea, I've never really been serious about Linux gaming. And also the fact I have a Gefore 4 ti 4200, so I can't get first hand experince with ATi's linux drivers.

Also most linux gamers use a geforce of some sort (although that's starting to change) so I guess that nvidias linux drivers/support for linux IS better.

care to elaborate on that ? sounds suspicious.. then again, I can't recall that I've heard this info... some cloudy space tells me that I have, but not sure

I've heard about the 64bit XP. I thought it was released ages ago?

Anyone have any info, my next CPU will hopefully be of the AMD64 variety.

it's already out; now, it was supposed to be released years ago, but never happened, just this month; test samples have already been given out to some last month, but not for retail until now

yes there will be a WindoxXP64 due out late this year;

nice find

no it wont. i just read a amd PR that states that Athlon64 will be just as well off without its release around the same time. Microsoft says it will be out around Q1 04 from an article i read.
hmm ?
