I have 2 computers, If I buy hl2 from steam, can I play cs source on one pc and my friend play hl2 single player on my other pc or do I have to buy the retail to be able to play on both pcs? Thanks in advance..

I don't think you can login to your account in two different places at the same time, so no.

wait so you have to be logged on to steam to play hl2? Wasn't there some kind of offline mode? Ok I just tried it......I unplugged my internet, played cs source on one pc with my account and played condition zero on the other pc in offline mode.....Woot, thank you steam.....Thats from one pc.

I would edit the above but this is a little different........The whole point of steam is to be able to install games to a different computer with your same account without the hassle of disks. So couldn't you go to all your friends house that have hl2 preloaded, unlock it for them with your account, then they could play the game offline, is this a loophole or do they have a fix for this? Does anyone know?

yes but if they every get back on the internet then they are screwd.

oh and you have to log in every 30 days i think... or somthing like that.

Why would they be screwed, I thought the whole point of steam is so that you can play any game you wanted with your account on any pc? Right?

No, its a bit of a loophole, but an aceptable one. Besides, single player games have been being cracked and shared since year dot, so its damn near impossible to spot.

Anyway, valve recognise that whilst the single player will be amazing and fun, its only a few hours worth of fun. Multiplayer is what 90% of HL2 players will want, and it is totally impossible to play without buying a copy. Can't be done.

Thanks for the answer, I was trying to think of it the other way which is you can buy the game on cd retail then take it to your friends house install it on his pc and just use a no cd crack so that he could play it as well which just the same as using steam with one account. Or maybe steam only unlocks it one time according to your wonid or something like that...Has there been any literature about this. I looked through the faq for steam but found nothing...

Acutally you can do it. one person has to login using offline mode, and then the other one can connect to steam's network to play CS:S.

HL2 would only be unlocked on your acct on his computer. If he tries to log onto his own acct on his computer, he will see HL2 as being available, but he won't be able to play it. He'll need a new CD code to unlock it for his account.

However as long as he has your USERNAME/PASSWORD he can log onto your account and play any of your games.

K that I understand. But can't he at the same time play a single player game offline too?

Tell your cheap tard of a friend to not be so cheap, and get his own copy. What your doing is actually illegal, you bought a copy and are giving it to other people who have no paid for that product.

Also dont double post, who cares if they are 2 diffrent subjects, thats why the english lanuage has paragraphs.

Look dummy. My question was I have 2 pcs and If I buy it through steam am I able to play hl2 on one pc while playing cs source on another. They are 2 different games and my question is if steam allows this kind of setup.

My second question dummy was isn't it possible to exploit steam and be able to play it on another pc. Then I cam to the realization that it is the same thing as taking a game you own to your friends house to play.

So I am not worried about the second question but wondering about the first. Thanks dummy for your useless reply. Next time don't tell me what to do.

Woah woah woah, back up there Jethro.

If you do that, its illegal, your account could be erased, and they could even take legal action in the court. The point of STEAM was to release updates and not have to wait 3 or 4 weeks, or even months for one big patch.

It was also, indeed, to eliminate the hassle of CDs.

What your talking about could result in a profit loss for VALVe...

I'm not trying to be too harsh, but I think VALVe really could sue you for doing that.

Ok ok, go back to dling your songs :D

i think u could better let ur friend buy the game or download it somewhere ;) or just play together

it may screw up ur account and then u and ur friend wont be playing it

So you can't play your games on any pc you wanted? So if you buy retail you can play your games on any pc but if you but off of steam you can only play on one pc. That doesn't make sense so before you reply think, actually think for a second. Lawsuit, whatever like they have time to sue 1 person. Thats the whole point of an account. You can go to other pc's and play your games there. For example . Lets say you are at work. You dl hl2, your account unlocks it and now your playing hl2 at work. You logg off. You get home. You sign on and your playing hl2 at home. That is the point of steam. Anyways I finally tried it.

I was playing beta source on one pc , and I was playing counterstrike offline on another pc so I know its possible.

So I answered my question since no one else was able to. You can play hl2 offline on one pc and you can play cs source online on another.......So there I go.

if you want to install your copy on a mates pc to unlock it and then let them play at the same time while not beng onlinethen its your call. but if they ever even accidently log on in online mode or if steam tries to update and logs in while theyre just looking at porn then your gona be sussed.

i guarantee steam i will track log in times and ips as well as game playing time (ie when you loaded it up and when you stopped playing) if that info gets back to valve itll be cross referenced to check if the same id/software was being played on two seperate pcs at the same time...and account bans shall be dealt out liberally.

Or not. Steam will only let a user account log on to one machine at a time, so if he "accidentally" logs on, or rather, tries to, he will get "Account already in use" type message. Given that steams whole princible is that you can play your games on any machine without having to cart disks and CD keys around, I don't think they will ban you for it.

What if I logged into a machine whilst still logged into another, having forgotten I'm logged in elsewhere? Thats legit and wouldn't look any different to valve that what you suggest.
