Gamespot published an article earlier this week about Spore, a new game by Will Wright. It's a very strange premise for a game, but it might work.

The game allows the player to begin with developing a creature as a cellular entity and eventually creating a creature with more sophisticated brain functions, which will change the nature of the game to a more RTS-type game (he cited a particular favorite of his, Populous), where players will control herds of creatures. Once you upgrade the "hut" around which the creatures centralize, the game changes into what he called "a simple version of SimCity" where the player manages technology and interacts with other cities that have sprung up around the world. Wright demonstrated how the player can eventually purchase a UFO to travel between planets--and eventually star systems--to populate, conquer, or simply observe.

This sounds bloody awesome. Wish there was more info/any pictures

I agree. The game sounds ingenious. It's just like Will Wright to do something original.

Yeah.. sounds cool. BTW... don't britians say bloody? I don't recall ever seeing a Virginian ever saying that.

I say lots of stuff like that, words tend to catch on for a week or a month or two at my school.

cuz if it say you begin since a celular entity them is going to be loooooong

From the 1up.com article:

# Tidepool phase: In the game's initial state, the action most resembles a sort of free-form Pac-Man. There's also a strong hint of Super NES classic E.V.O. and quirky GameCube cult favorite Cubivore; fighting and consuming other creatures allows you to adjust the form and abilities of your creature.
# Evolution phase: Once your creature begins to grow and take on a distinct physical form, the game switches to a more Diablo-like feel. With its emphasis on battling other creatures to strengthen yourself while making forays away from your safe haven, this section is very much about growth and development.
# Tribal phase: When your creation has achieved a satisfying level of physical development, you can focus on its mental acuity. At this point, you relinquish control of an individual and instead move to a streamlined RTS interface, caring for an entire tribe of your homebrewed beasties, giving them tools, food and slowly upgrading their state of existence. Think Populous.
# City phase: Here the game becomes more like Wright's own SimCity, with emphasis resting primarily on building up the technology, architecture and infrastructure of your race's dwellings.
# Civ phase: Once your city is established, you can zoom out to the global scale. Here your people begin seeking out other cultures in a Civilization-style experience. Interfacing with the rest of the world can be tackled in many ways, be it militaristically or diplomatically; on foot, in boats or by airship. Ultimately, however, the goal is for your creatures to conquer the planet.
# Invasion phase: Once the world is your oyster, you can move on to other worlds in your solar system to colonize or terraform. And beyond that you'll find other solar systems, scattered throughout a beautifully-rendered galaxy in which planets lurk among dust clouds and black holes spew ejecta. Here you set forth to make contact with other planets.

The scope of this game is like Civilization times 1000. I mean, I thought controlling little Sims made for a complicated game. I have no idea how this game will be designed, but I'm sure Wright is the guy to do it.

This game sounds like it will be amazing. Even more amazing though is the way they are making it. Priority one was to bring the cost of next gen games down. All the textures, models and animations are made on the fly instead of from thousands of graphic artists. Very impressive.

Way to go Will W.

No worries. It's not coming out tomorrow. You'll have plenty of time to save up money for a new rig.

Sorry to dig this thread up, but I read some news that made me very happy. EA will prolly have more Spore on E3. According to Eurogamer.net (how do you guys like their new layout btw?) it'll shown behind closed doors. I'm hoping for some official screenshots or maybe even movies.

not sure about the new layout, the old 1 was easier to navigate, the new 1 has too many ads. also you have to register to comment on articles now. :O

But Will Wright can basically do what he wants.

and whats so famous about this guy?

what games he made?

he is the creator of the sims?

wow thats means this game is going to be very variated

Gamespot has preview online: LINK

This game might really deliver what was promised. Not counting BF2, Spore is the game I anticipate the most right now.

With the sheer glut of mediocrity that passes for games now this one can't come soon enough.

What irony then that it's being published by EA, the biggest producers of genericana going.

Fingers crossed things don't go south on this project.

IGN has a preview online with some actual screens of the pictures that were taken at the GDC two months ago. It's way more elaborate than the Gamespot article.

After finding a planet a bit farther away from the sun, Will zoomed on in with his UFO and then dropped the creature off to see what would happen. Unfortunately for the creature, there was no atmosphere on the planet and it soon exploded into a bloody spray from the lack of pressure.
Wow. :o

This is the kind of thinking outside the box that we need these days. With all these new games focusing on better graphics but with the same familiar gameplay, a game like Spore is well overdue.

I look forward to seeing how limitless and complex one's creativity can really be in Spore. I wonder if the abilities and purposes of the vehicles that you create can be customized as well, or if they have set unit types with pre-set functions, movements and abilites, like tanks and boats, that can only be customized visually. It would be awsome if all aspects of everything can be changed!

Hopefully the game will live up to expectations. It looks really cool!

It's great, and there'll be a XB360 version too, hopefully with XBL support, too bad the release date is Fall 2006, feels so far away :(

Here is a streaming video of Will Wright's demonstration of Spore. You have to register to see it but all you need is a name and e-mail address.

Thanks for that. Watching it now. And I will be for a while coz it's over one hour! Cool!

I hope it will be completely modable. I can't wait to make a Combine race. :p

Well, Wright made himself a picture-perfect Care Bear race... :D

This should be possible. Wright mentioned that in the later stages of the game you can cross-breed and make hybrid races to re-establish on other planets, which sounds basically what the Combine does!
