Spore!

The majority of those amazon reviews just say "won't buy it with DRM". They haven't even played it. Just complaining about some bullshit that doesn't even effect the game.

Yes, this behaviour is quite irritating and childish. You don't like the DRM (publisher and marketing decision)? Don't buy the game, but don't put the blame on developers and designers who worked very hard on Spore. It's just not fair.

The constant negativity about Spore is really starting to get to me. If you look at this game as what it was actually meant to be (from the 2006 redesign, at least) it's incredibly charming and fun. Yes, the game has massive flaws, the gameplay is dumbed down, blah blah blah... but as disappointed as I am about that, it has managed to make me smile more than any game in recent memory. It's probably the first game since Mass Effect where I've felt that singular magic that only being absorbed in a good game can get you.

I feel like if this wasn't the almighty Spore, and just some little indie game, people would be going crazy over the wonder of it all. Instead, people have attached all of these crushing expectations, and when they're not met, they storm message boards and reviews crying injustice. So what if you're not going to be playing it in a month. People buy games like half life knowing full well that it's going to be a one-time thing, and don't cry about it.

Spore has its flaws... oh yes it does... but I still love it.

In my opinion, a lot of people were expecting a full artificial life evolution simulation like this research project (btw, check that out, it's amazing). All we have is a good and funny game, and that's ok for me, but no Darwin :)

Ok I used a couple of cheats and I still couldn't beat the game! This website lists the cheats available: http://www.cheatcc.com/pc/sporecheatscodes.html I got close to the ending, but I was still far away:
The center of the galaxy is covered in every inch of Grox and his empires. Your just under constant attack and there is the natural disasters to deal with that you don't care about, light years away from you are. Wormholes also appear and that effect is cool and serves as a half ass waypoint system. I accidentally stopped auto-gaining health and I blew up. Frustrated I looked up the ending on youtube:

What a lame ending eh? The game just never ends and keeps going. That staff they say automatically creates a fully terraformed planet. Big woop right? They don't even give you the keys to a planet buster. :hmph:

Half the fun of a boycott is telling everyone about it.

lol, you guys were expecting some kind of super game or something, it's a damn decent game if you take away all the promises made (which I don't know why you even listen to anymore, devs never keep promises), it's a good game to play. You guys were expecting way too much, I'm glad I didn't hype it at all. I was actually expecting it to be shit, I probably am not going to buy it anymore, but still.

Merc 2 will do.

Wut? Spore > Mercs 2 in every sense of the word BETTER.

I realized it's not worth $70 so I'll spend $60 on Mercs 2 instead.

No other games to buy..

I dunno, I never played it, I didn't pay to own Spore (wink wink), and I was going to actually pay for it, but after some playtime I realized it's not worth $70 so I'll spend $60 on Mercs 2 instead.

Neither games are worth the purchase seeing as how Spore's singleplayer gets dull after a while, and Mercs 2 is just shit.

Also, I really need a new game for the 360. Someone needs to help me pick out a good game. I have 10 minutes to go rent one. Tell me now! Ahhhh.

Don't underestimate the power of the hype :)

Not in my book.

I got about 8 hours of average gameplay out of Spore.

So far I've had at least 15-20 hours of solid gameplay from Mercs 2 with some great gaming memories.

Yes they are completely different games, but what Mercs 2 lacks in polish, it makes up for in pure fun and lasting appeal. Spore succeeds in polish, but has very average gameplay and zero lasting appeal. They should've left in the more complex creature creation, physics, underwater gameplay, and most of all, the evolution-based stats as opposed to the shitty trivial stats that come with the assorted creature/vehicle parts.

Half the fun of a boycott is telling everyone about it.

A pointless boycott, in my opinion. Bioshock and Mass Effect (and Spore? and Dragon Age?) have been or will be commercial successes, and we know that the activation limit is in place only on the first year of the game's life (see the removal in Bioshock).

So I've passed the tribal stage in Spore, and can say that I've overestimated this game based on the first two stages. I mean it's a fun game, but I can see it getting incredibly dull as it has been going downhill to me. I don't know, but the game feels to be losing spunk.

Also, I probably would have found Mercs 2 more fun if I were to play it with one of me friends in co-op or even an HL2.netter. I didn't have fun playing alone, but the game is returned now so no worries.

Having the creature parts with different stats was a stupid as **** decision.

I'm just beginning the tribal stage. It was pretty fun up to that point, but for some reason I feel incredibly lazy to play it now.

Spore dumbed down, Will Wright prefers Sims 2 Metacritic Score+Sales over Half-Life's

As wonderful as the content creation and sharing options are, the one consistent complaint I've seen is that the gameplay seems to have been "dumbed down" for the sake of appealing to a more casual audience. Was it?

"I'd say that's quite accurate," Wright told me. "We were very focused, if anything, on making a game for more casual players. "Spore" has more depth than, let's say, "The Sims" did. But we looked at the Metacritic scores for "Sims 2", which was around 90, and something like "Half-Life", which was 97, and we decided - quite a while back - that we would rather have the Metacritic and sales of "Sims 2" than the Metacritic and sales of "Half-Life."

It seems like an odd comparison to make, Half-Life might not have sold as well as The Sims 2 but it's not like it sold poorly. Indeed it sold more than few games even approach.

Makes me wonder what Valve would prefer, the landmark impact Half-Life had on everything FPS or 5 million more copies sold. Personally I'd go for the former.

What I find interesting is that we are missing several epochs from the game

I know its a cliche but we can't forget that we're also dealing with EA here so when Will Wright says 'we decided' he really means EA told him to appeal to everyone to make more moneys.

EA's a business, they care not for impact if it doesn't make maximum profits. Sucks.

Can i also mention those sales numbers are pretty wrong.

I honestly didn't expect all that much from this game, going from the videos. I was actually hoping to be proven wrong, but that wasn't the case. Spore is fun in the earlier stages, but once you hit civ stage and beyond, it really becomes a mess for me. When it comes down to it, you're really just playing 5 separate games for a couple hours each, and they get worse each time.

Civ. is pretty much the exact same as Tribal. Space is a lot more interesting at first, but quickly deteriorates when you have to micromanage a galaxy of whiners and you realize there isn't a lot of fun in saving 3 planets at once every 7 minutes while trying to actually make progress.

if it was so dumbed down, why was it delayed for so long?

This, oh god i ****ing HATE it!

Dumbing down is a skill that takes months of hard work, and requires special technical knowledge only found in certain dwarf tribes found in and around Istanbul. Who only accept nuggets of raw Titanium as payment. Don't you know anything?

Agreed, also those Wiki figures are seriously out of date now. I suspect that HL2 has probably shipped beyond the 10 million mark by now, given the inclusion in the OB and the fact pretty much everyone on Steam has it.

Here's a few tips on how to reach the galactic core...
If you have the terraforming tools then you can build a path to the centre of the galaxy. In case you haven't noticed all the worlds the grox have a city on are T0 as far as i can tell they're all medium atmosphere worlds that are extremely cold. If you use the heat ray on a grox planet so that its temperature raises to T1 or above then it kills all the grox cities on that planet as they can only survive on T0 planets. So all you have to do is make a dash for the centre of the galaxy, fly to a grox planet, heat it up to T1 with the heat ray, build your own city and repair/refuel. From there you simply make another dash through several more systems before repeating the process until you're close enough to make the final dash.

I waited years for Spore and I've already stopped playing it.

Will Wright needs to quit EA, is ****ing his image (and vision) so badly.

Then link me up with some better ones. Exact sales numbers are really beside the point though.

Because earlier versions of the Sims games have problems patching up, not to mention have several incompatibilities with expansion packs. People upgrade to collectors edition, some games are buggy, require refund that sort of thing.

That is why I fail to see Sims as a genre breaking game, because the simplest process of patching and expasion pack compatibility means it has lost my vote
