I'll definitely wait a bit, until a good percentage of the kinks and bugs have been worked out. Then I'll get it.

Hey if you don't see a need to upgrade from Xp then don't. If Xp works fine for you thats great.

Microsoft has never waited so long to release an OS.
I will skip ME cuz ME is gay.
95 -> 98, 3 years.
98 -> 2000, 2 years.
2000 -> Xp, 1 year.
Xp -> Vista, 6 years.

It is a significant improvement for the average user, business people, gamers, and developers.

Sure they could have coded some more of the stuff into Xp, but hey Id Software could have just updated Doom 1 with all the stuff Doom 3 for free. Valve could have just taken Half-Life updated it with everything Half-Life 2 has for free, but they released Half-Life 2 seperate.

aero glass is a gimmick as much as compiz/xgl are, which seems to be quite a selling point for linux zealots.

there's also more behind aero than just some transparency and shadow effects, the whole 'engine' has been completely re-written and takes a different [better] approach to previous versions of windows; most people seem to think (or don't know any better) that it's just a surface thing, when there really is alot of work going into the 'backend.'

alot of these things may seem like they're going against that cliche, but in general, they are just plain better.

i'm getting vista for the kernel 're-write' alone, things like uac, avalon, protected mode, instant search and so on are just damn nice extras.

like i've said before, i was really content with 98 and i wasn't in a hurry to get xp, a bunch of friends [illegally] got it and they were saying it was just 10x better, in general.. i pretty much see the same thing happening here, alot of people will say they see nothing worthwhile upgrading for, but the millions upon millions who do will convince you all quickly. ;)

i would say "i don't understand why you don't want to switch" but as said, xp really is a stable and fine os, but vista is just better in so many ways.. i guess i'll be one of those people testing it for you. ^_________^

nice analogy minerel. :)

nope, but if you get a clue you may realise that some people may like windows, or simply doesn't like morons. ;)

it's funny, when someone 'defends' (i use that word loosely) apple or open source (linux) they're 'praised' yet if someone does it from the other side, we see stupid comments like yours.. the interweb is most marvelous ! :D

I like windows too but you just dont seem to be able to handle people having differing opinions.
edit: and when i say windows im referring of course to the versions prior to windows 1984.

no, there is a difference to having an opinion and attemping to state something.

eg; vista is only xp with a new gui, dx10 is only being added to vista [and not xp] to push sales and dx10 could be implemented in xp.

notice how i don't have a problem with anyone (like, the ones who have different opinions), except the same people who make the same posts in every vista thread ? yeah..

I'll get it when I upgrade, and hopefully SP1 will have passed by then.

such as ?
I think he's talking about "Trusted Computing" and the anti-piracy (privacy) hard-coded elements of Vista.

trusted computing, you mean the thing not really fully supported nor functional in vista ? and the thing which is supported in mac os x and the actual chip is present on the hardware ? i see. :p

i'm really not too up to date on the apparent rampant drm in vista, so i'm asking a genuine question. :)

new/improved windows explorer .. it's just plain 10x better.

Am I one of the only ones to hate the new explorer? I liked full paths and to have this default noobification pushed onto me was horrid.

Ahahahaha pretty GUI's count for nothing.

greater orgianisation including better ingeration of search, better and new use of metadata and so on.

I can say I've never used search at all.

new/improved start menu .. also just plain better.

I put it back to the old school start menu pretty damn quickly.

kernel is more or less rewritten.

About damn time.

Look if you like windows good for you, but there are alternatives that suite my needs rather well and do the damn job. It's natural for people to bad mouth Vista so don't get so high about yourself, ignore them.

omg is it really that hard to click a few things and change that.... I mean hell I don't even think my Xp shows the address bar by default!

Better than having it look utterly disgusting where you want to puke.

you hate the whole new explorer because of the bread crumb nav ? lol, okay..

whether you don't use the new search functionality or not, it does not take away that it is useful/good; personal preference plays into every part of an os and is not really valid for criticism (not explicitly though).

Ahahahaha pretty GUI's count for nothing.
once again, another person who is only looking on the surface, (as i've said) there is alot more to just how it looks.

here are 2 good starting points:

http://blogs.msdn.com/greg_schechter/archive/2006/04/02/566767.aspx

.. and if 'pretty guis' count for nothing ? why is the gui of os x and compiz/xgl such a selling point for os x and linux ? lol..

i do ignore [the majority of] them, otherwise i would be making thousands of posts every time i ventured onto the internet. :eek:

i do not high about myself, i more or less have little input, i just 'present facts' or whatever wording suits you.

I'm gonna boycott Vista.
I don't care about the improvements, M$ can rot for all that I care.
Blasted monopoly bitches. :angry:

Becuase a larger portion of computing society must have a unique and interesting desktop that they need to change every two weeks. The current systems work fine for me so I don't see the need for change.

btw I read a bit into those articles and hardware accelerated 3d or anything similar desktops just arnt my thing. Yes it can be and will be turned off if I ever encounter a full version of Vista. As it is though I don't see it as a worthwhile addition. Granted not having to restart and OS with new video drivers is nice but it can already be done in many linux setups.

I'm also a Gameplay>Graphics person. As it is we have enough tech to make fun and engaging games. Sadly some companies don't understand this and seem content making tech demos for a living.

When you install vista will your hard disc be cleaned like when installing XP?

I'd buy it but...I don't purchase my software. lol

Except for Valve games, I fully support them. And Guild Wars, but I got my 2nd copy free and my 3rd for $15 off my friend who quit playing

You have three options.

1. Format your XP drive - Don't do this
2. Upgrade your XP install - Don't do this
3. Install to another location and dual boot

1 and 2 are stupid seeing this is only a beta.
