New Doom III Preview

http://www.homelanfed.com/index.php?id=16400

Willits said that the physics engine for Doom III is a unique id Software engine and is not a licensed engine like other games have. Willits described a Doom III test map where 100 boxes are stacked up and one shot can bring the entire stack down. Willits claimed such a scene would bring other game physics engines down to their knees.

Please take note of the bold. Hit me if I'm wrong but was that a direct arrogant dig at the HL2 engine. I mean seriously what else would it be?

Please feel free to express any form of anger. If I'm correct. If I'm tripping. But it does get me angry when a arrogant company flames a humble company like Valve's work like that.

fs abomination is jut going to come back and delete this topic.

It probably is. When u get HL2 u can try this, if it runs okay u can be mad, if it doesn't hes right :)

He was just talking about how great he thinks the Physics engine is. He didn't mention anything about Valve at all. He just thinks people will be impressed.

Bear in mind, he hasn't Played Half Life 2, it's just an opinion. He's probably comparing them to games that are already out.

Anyway, I'm sure that the Source engine will be capable of 100 boxes in a room. Valve did have that demostration with the moving machine with Gears and Cogs, which could've been stopped in a lot of ways with a Spanner.

It could be that the physics engine of doom 3 is better than the one of hl2. Why not? What is wrong with that?

It could be that it is not. But who cares? I mean, there will always be better stuff. And that is a good thing for gamers don't you think?

As long as you think hl2 is great and worth buying it, be happy.

Don't complain about other companies having a better engine (or claiming they have a better one), but be happy about the progress in the game industry. :bounce:

Even if Doom III has more powerfull physics there is a problem:
What is the reason for employing it in a corridor enviroment? It would be just stupid, all HL2 physics we have seen actually makes sense and just isnt a show.

Wilco, Abomination gave him permission.
And Feath is correct. He wasn't having a dig at Valve he was just praising the physics engine. I mean, who is he? Did he deisgn the physics engine? If so, fair play to him.

Valve can't exactly boast about their physics because they didn't make them. If he's designed an engine that's as good as Havok or better on his own, then he's totally justified in what he says. Give him a break.

I thought Havok was only responsible for the ragdoll effect?

I met Willits at a Press conference for Quake II in Australia. I asked him "Is the reason for your female character to jump on the success of recent female characters in games such as Lara Croft?"

He then raised his voice and said "We are iD software we don't need to do that"

And then I asked him "Would Quake II be released on PS1?" he laughed at me and said "It can't handle it". 1 year later it was on PS1.

At the same press conference they were all extremly arrogant to everyone and I actually laughed to myself so many times in disbelief.

Let me assure you peoples. That comment was a dig at Valve. Plain and simple.

Kamakari, this is about three more posts away from starting a flame war.

You're just looking at things in black and white.

Black and White? Are you referring to my avatar?:p

Lol, if thats not a miscommunication (i love that word  ), I have my opinion about Willits.

I'm stating mine.

EDIT: Just to clarify in case it is difficult to get what I meant, I meant he's being very narrow minded and not looking at other options. To him Willits was either slagging Valve off or not, and he refuses to believe it was the latter. There is more than one way of looking at things.

Here my opinion:
BÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ!!!!!!

Btw, I'm always best ;)

I respect them so deeply with what they brought into my Old School. Playing Modem to Modem with a mate after school for hours or before call waiting went off or before Mum told me off for being on the phone and I should be doing homework. So much good memories.

You know something? I would say all of the things I say in this thread to iD personally to there faces if I had a chance. There pride has turned into a green ugly monster around them. And when they start to have little digs at other humbled companies like Valve it gets me so angry.

Im with Chris_D here. This is gonna be a flamewar very very soon.

Its kinda funny to see everyone looking for things to post and then say "OMG! THAY DISSED HL2!!!!11"

....well well...

Open your eyes. It wasn't a dig at Valve.

Brings a whole new definition to the word "fan boy" doesn't it?

Ok. iD aren't bluntly going to flame Valve are they? No way. So they do it suttle like. Like that. Trust me it's so them. heheh.

This raises a good question.

The working relationships with the iD crew are heavily publisicised (sp?) and half of the time it ends up a member leaving or people throwing insults. In reality I guess that while iD are full of the industries best, most appear to have attitudes.

Now the question is: - We don't know anything about the Valve teams working relationship. So whats Valve like?

Send an e-mail to ID and ask if that comment was an indirect insult to Valve, and send an e-mail to Gabe and ask him if he gives a shit. Both answers will come back negative. So just leave it man.

That really doesn't matter Rossel.

Yeah who was that guy who left iD when they first announced Doom 3. Ummm. The upper management hated his guts so bad and wanted him gone...

I can't be bothered with this anymore.

lol! its called marketing!

If you run a company and you say something like "My produkt in not good at all...dont buy it! Get it from the nextdoor shop instead!" It wont sale. People are dumb and thinks "aha, thats great!" when thay hear "This produkt is the best in the world, you cant find any better!"

You learn that when you grow up little one...

I think its just better that we have these "mega-games" coming now in pretty much same time. It raises the quality of competition and gives us consumers better games.
-
Hollenshead said he was not worried about other highly anticipated games like Half-Life 2 and Halo 2 taking away some of Doom III’s thunder, saying, “We don’t need other games to suck for ours to be good.”
-
And how come they implented the physics engine after hearing about that hl2 will have a good physics engine in it(if i remember right).. :)
Just waiting for bungie for releasing their information about the "best physics engine ever"
Im not trying to dis any game here, i think theyr all going to be great, just trying to get my point clear.

I don't think that was a crack at Valve. Their engine can do that, that's great, just because they're telling us doesn't mean they're bragging to Valve or anything.

Hell, if any comment made about their engine's capability is meant as an insult to the other company, Valve has been insulting the crap out of iD for a long time now.

Besides, if it is, what do we care? We don't work at Valve. We're not Gabe Newell. Move on with your lives people!

i'm quite sure that the source engine can handle the same thing, but a) it would be no use and b)would it sell a single copy? No. People only go for the overall experiance, and if HL2s physics would be neat, but the gameplay would suck, nobody would buy it. that also works the other way around. Just because the doom III engine can do it, I'm not going to buy Doom III, because I don't like the setting.

however, he says it can be done, and that it brings othe engine to their knees (what I doubt...). that wasn't a sidekick on source, but on every single game engine out there. it's like majestic said. Marketing.

Weel, let's schedule a big death fight between John Carmack and Gabe Newell. They will fight with crowbars while the Star Trek battle music plays. We may throw some headcrabs in to add some challenge.

As long as it isn't a direct and very arrogant insult, I don't care what he implied. By direct and arrogant insult, refer to Core against Lucasarts.

Lol , what an ass. ID :-/

While Willits' comment may not have been an outright dig at Half-Life 2, tell me, what other game currently in developement is making a name for itself with a robust physics engine? You'd have to be pretty naive to think Willits didn't at least have Half-Life 2 in mind when he made his outrageous comment.

It should also be pointed out that the MacroMedia Flash demos at Havok's website can perform a simliliar feat to the one Willits claims would "bring other game engines down to their knees."

It would seem that after Valve completely stole id's thunder, id is now reduced to making petty and boastful statements instead of simply releasing media and proving they have a superior product. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

To my knowledge, Valve has never claimed that a given feature "would bring other game engines down to their knees."

Maybe not valve but ALOT of other games/companys have that line in their promos.

and those are usaully the games that blow........

People people. Let's think about this. Doom3 ALONE brings people's systems to their knees (even in the latest benchmarks, it's essentially unplayable at even medium detail without a high end DX8 card), with or without lots of physics calculations. The computers at QuakeCon are playing Doom3 at 640x480 with no AA. If you're forced to play in such a low resolution to prevent even your high end your graphics card from blowing up, then yeah, I bet you can probably spend the extra CPU cycles for a couple more physics calculations. But that's nothing to crow about either.
