I know the RC is free and good for a year. But for those who are going to pick it up anyway then Newegg has the upgrade versions on discount.
$100 for the Pro
$50 for the Home

Discount expires July 11th. They have both 32 and 64bit version in the box.

I still can't believe they're making 32-bit version, I mean jesus christ, let it go. But look who I'm talking to, they're still releasing it with an "XP Mode".

The XP mode is in case there are any compatibility problems with older programs. Its a smart move to include it, and a good idea at any rate.

What's the harm in doing it? If you're installing 64-bit, then you're fine.

MS doesn't want another hardware fiasco like with Vista. They want Win7 to be able to run on a multitude of devices, including netbooks. Some of them are still 32-bit too.

Trust me, by probably Win8, MS will only be offering 64-bit. They already cut 32-bit support for server, so the client is next up on the cutting list.

Just encourage everyone to upgrade to 64-bit and it will help push MS to realize there are less and less people on 32-bit and thus make it not worth the cost of maintaining it, where they can instead use those resources to make a pure 64-bit OS.

Obviously this won't happen until all major apps work in 64-bit mode. For example, IE8 has a 64-bit version, but it isn't set as the default because a crap load of plugins won't work (such as Flash). Once major vendors fix everything, MS will have confidence to cut 32-bit and we can all be happy!

the majority of every processor is 64bit compatible now though.

Every new processor, yes. There's a lot of older ones still out there.

im installing the trial version right now....if I like I might buy a OS for the first time in my life.

Professional sounds good with that xp compatibility mode n' all, but I'll wait until it gets cheaper.

Not including XP mode in the Home versions is god damn stupid. Then like no one will have it.

Oh I get it, with the new 'upgrade anytime' feature unlocker, it could work out I guess.

i use W7 on my laptop, starting to like it.

*waits for OEM price*

The thing is this is a pre order. So you aren't actually buying anything. Can't ya place the order and then like 3 months from now cancel it because the product doesn't ship til like October?

I'm pretty sure XP qualifies to get you Win7 upgrade. But I don't think you can do a upgrade from your XP install with everything already there. I think you would have to do a format and fresh Win7 install and then pop in the XP disc showing you own it.

You can't upgrade from XP.

I pre-ordered Home Premium because $50 is hell of a deal, especially when it's going to cost $120 retail on the release date and there's no way I'm spending that much.

Depending on what you consider upgrading..the answer will differ.
Being more clear is better.
Don't have to buy the full retail Win7 and save money by getting Win7 Upgrade when already have XP? Yes
Go directly from existing install to Win7? No

If you get a copy of Vista (key not required) then you can do a upgrade from XP to Vista and then from Vista to Win7 with everything still in tact.

Do you guys know if you need the xp serial key or just the disk when doing the 7 install? I bought a copy of XP years ago, but after moving three times since then, I can't find the license key anywhere.

If I'm currently on 32-bit Vista, can I upgrade to 64-bit 7 without any problems?

i just wiped my hard drive and installed...easiest installation of any OS so far

It won't work. To upgrade you need to be running setup through Vista and the installer won't run because it's in 64-bit and it's getting run on a 32-bit OS.

At least, thats the problem I had getting my Vista 32-bit to upgrade to the Windows 7 64-bit RC. I had to format and clean install the Windows 7 RC.

Bah, nevermind, I didn't see that Asus already answered that.

Eventhough the RC doesn't expire for another year, it won't remain fully functional until then. Thinking the RC will go into a "limited mode" as early as this July or August.

I think I've heard that us Europeans aren't gonna be able to do any upgrades because it's not technically possible to upgrade from Vista with IE to Windows 7E that doesn't have Internet Explorer. Not 100% certain about this.

Not all Atoms (commonly found in netbooks) are x64:

Well Microsoft are blaming the EU commission saying that they can't offer upgrades due to competition laws while the EU commission are saying that's a load of nonsense and Microsoft are free to release upgrade versions here. Microsoft can easily offer upgrades for Vista to Win7, as we we can still buy regular Win 7 with IE. Infact i haven't seen anyware that actually stocks Vista E and i think it'll be the same with Win 7E. Personally i am fed up with the EU commission and wish they would stop meddling because it's only harming the customers. Apple get away with bundling Safari,Itunes .etc on thier Macs and no one says anything yet the EU commission throws a hissy fit cause Microsoft bundle IE and Media player.

Most people I know who aren't computer savvy still have 32 bit processors. And applications still aren't compatible with vista, so why not the XP mode?

then these people will continue to use xp/vista and when they want to use 7, they'll upgrade to a system that supports 64bit.

I know they exist, but honestly, what current applications aren't supported by vista? Because so far the only programs I've found I can't run on vista are generations old or are plug-ins for automatic driver detection. And if you want to run old software then you should run an old OS.

The idea is, if you don't force people to move forward with technology, some never will. My aunt's computer is a pentium 3 and she still has AOL dialup, I can't imagine the heart attack she's going to have with her next computer purchase, "ahh!! reinstall office 2000 quick!!"

I am going to use this thread as a windows 7 help thread for myself. At least for one Post. I hope somebody sees it.

Why is my volume in windows 7 so quiet? In my games, I have to crank my volume on my speakers to max to get decent volume. In the sound settings it's all the way up.

Any way I can fix this?

I'm assuming you know to set your volume in the taskbar...... right?

Is it onboard or a separate card (which one)? Do you have the newest drivers? 2.1 speakers?

VIA VT1708S

Hmm, never heard of this chipset before. Anyways, you didnt say if you have the drivers for it. Your motherboard should have come with the disk that had audio drivers on it. If you dont have it then im sure you can get them from Asus' website.

Installed the drivers from the site. Didn't seem to make any difference.

Oh well. Bah.

I guess if you went into control panel already, then you could try making sure you have your speakers plugged into the right jack. You might get better results from the 'headphone' output rather than the 'line out' or vice versa. Make sure you don't have your speakers plugged into the 'MIC' input jack, if you have one.

I seem to recall having a problem like this before. I think my issue was conflicting volume control panels. Something I installed was overriding my Windows control panel settings.
