Windows 7 Home Premium $30 for college students

Any idea if this deal just provides an upgrade from vista or a full version?

I wanted the 64bit version, but I'm on 32bit Vista. I know I can't do an upgrade, only a fresh install. I can't deduce if these offers will provide an iso for a full 64bit install D:

pretty sure win7 home premium comes with both 32 and 64bit versions

I know retail vista came with both but not OEM. Not sure about Win7.

it doesnt sound like it does:

According to NewEgg, the 32-bit and 64-bit OEM versions of Windows 7 Home Premium cost $110. NewEgg also offers a $10 preorder discount ending October 20, lowering the price to $100. The full retail version of Home Premium is priced at $200 and a retail upgrade is $120.

The 64-bit OEM version of Windows 7 Professional is priced at $140.

so 64 bit and 32 bit upgrades are separate SKUs as well as the 32 and 64 bit OEM versions

Guys. What Glenn wanted to know is if it was a complete OEM install or just an upgrade .iso, and whether an upgrade will work in his situation.

Glenn, from what I understand, you can still get a good deal here. For $20 extra you get the OEM box, which is pretty nice deal IMO. You should find more information in this very thread somewhere...

I know for sure I can't just upgrade. You can only upgrade from Vista from 32bit Vista to 32bit Win7. I assume the same goes for 64bit Vista to 64bit Win7.

I keep seeing the word 'upgrade' as part of this student deal, so it seems like I would only be able to upgrade to 32bit Win7. 64bit Win7 needs a fresh install, which I assume doesn't come with an windows 7 upgrade.

So yeah...it doesn't say anywhere. I might just have to stay 32bit which I didn't want to...

MS doesn't support going from 32bit to 64bit Win 7 without doing a fresh install. But I've seen guides posted on how to go from XP (32bit) to Vista (32bit) to Vista (64bit) and then Win7.

Here is a guide WinXP to Win7 (32 or 64).
Settings backed up, fresh install. Just need to reinstall programs as well.

You can do fresh installs with the retail upgrade (not sure about student). Some show how you can even buy the upgrade Win7 even if you don't have a previous key for Vista or whatever. Borrow someones vista and install. Only be on there an hour or so so no need to activate (you have 30 days anyway). Then upgrade with Win7. It doesn't seem to care that Vista hasn't been activated yet.

So there are a lot of paths not supported and yet a number of things open. I guess that is what makes it confusing.

Anyone knows when it will be available for Europe? I just switched from XP to Vista ~3 months ago, when I bought a new notebook, but I wasn't yet covered with the deal of switching to Win7 for free. But 30$ sounds like a good price.

What's so awesome about Win7 again? What are those awesome intuitive features Vista doesn't have that Shamrock spoke about in another thread?

I read that Microsoft has the right to charge you for the difference if they find you aren't really a student.

That's in the ToS, but I'm pretty sure this is an idle threat to the average person.

Take into consideration the amount of manpower it would take to actually follow up with thousands and thousands of people to see if they are actually students. Then there's the hassle of them actually forcing you to be liable for the difference in pricing.

I bet this is just there to have legal hooks into the relatively few people that will order a ton of keys by making new .edu email addresses to resell them.

Already got Ultimate from Technet.

Is there anything I'm really missing out on in opting for Home Premium instead? Can I still run things in compatibility mode for XP like I can in Vista (64 bit)?

No Win 7 Home premium will do every thing that Vista Home premium will do in terms of compatibility. With Ultimate you can run an XP emulator for software that won't run through compatibility mode, but it won't take advantage of your graphics card as I understand it, which kind of makes me think it's more for people who can't stand not being able to use their 15 year old accounts package rather than gamers.

Unless your planning on stuffing more than 16GB of Ram into your system any time soon I'd say Win 7 HP will suit you nicely.

Win7 Pro does this as well. But, as you said, it doesn't utilize your graphics card at all, so use other VM solutions that have been out if you want to use it for gaming. As MS has stated plenty of times, this solution is mostly for business users and their outdated apps.

I think they set up the XP emulator with 16 MB VRAM FYI, so a lot of games will have issues with that.

Canceled my order and swapped out for Professional anyways. No harm done and I get the silly bonus features for the same price. Thanks again for the heads up, Captain M4d.

Just clicked here where it says customer support and there's a little email form thingy.

just got the email saying its now available. Yay, windows 7!

Woops, got 64 bit upgrade instead of 32, so its completely useless to me. I could do a fresh install, but I really don't want to. I'll just install this on my laptop instead and keep on running XP on my desktop.

--First time looking at win 7. I despise the new taskbar. Circle in rectangle for start --what the **** were they thinking? Giant buttons for items with NO TEXT on the taskbar? What is this, OSX?

Hey now, I'm posting this from OSX Snow Leopard and I quite like my dock! From what I hear you can tinker around quite a bit with the new rendition of the aero taskbar of win7 and it's more intuitive than anything that Windows has offered before.

It is sort of a stinker that there's no classic option this go around, though. Can't wait to play with win7 on my desktop machine tomorrow.

Excuse my deviant double posting but I must vent my frustrations! Looks like I'll have to backup and reformat to get Professional on my PC, you can't go from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional with a mere upgrade install. The worst part is I forgot to bring my portable to college, gonna have to borrow one tonight.

What a rough life, amirite?

bah!

Apparently my laptop is also 32 bit. I did not know this. Also, the installer from this service only supports the upgrade, and not a full install.

So basically I wasted 30 dollars.

Heh, I cancelled my preorder a while ago and they confirmed the cancellation and I still got a download link and product key. Emailed the bastards again to make sure they don't charge me.

You mean you can't go from Home Premium to Pro with this version? ****!

the "fresh install" when using an upgrade version still saves all of your files in a folder, they just don't have all the registry entries, etc. It shouldn't be a major issue to back up and get things up and running, posting from Professional and upgraded from Home Premium here.

I'm disappointed that only students in the US and the UK get this deal (with the latter having to pay 160% more than Americans, but still).

Also, I found out that if I bought my laptop about 10 days later than I did, I would probably be eligible to get Win7 for free. I know someone mentioned that to me around the time I was getting the laptop, but back then there was no definite date for this so I didn't want to wait for an indefinite time. But now it turns out that I started using my Vista on the 16th of June, and the whole deal started on the 26th. :(

You should see if you can get a deal directly through your Uni or through calling MS Europe. I've found that successful in past renditions of Office/Windows and have studied in a couple big unis now.

If I have Windows Vista 32 bit Premium will I be able to update to Win 7 and which version should I go with??

I believe to do just an upgrade you have to from 32bit to 32bit. As far as version, I'd go with at least Professional, depending on what features you need.

A clean install is super easy, and with this you can go from 32bit to 64bit. A clean install for me took only about 40mins or so.

I can run 64 bit so this should be good. I hear good things about running games and stuff. do you think Win 7 utilizes power of multicore processors more efficiently than vista did??

I'd imagine so. I never used Vista so I can't say.

Got a refund, and got 32 bit.

Just learned: "YOU CANNOT DIRECTLY UPGRADE FROM WINDOWS XP TO WINDOWS 7"

**** this. I'm not backing up my 1TB of data. Sticking with XP.

Wins 98 is where its at! it was my favorite OS of Microsoft and I had the least amount of problems with it. also I'm not ready to upgrade to 7. I'll just wait 1 more year and either make a new rig or buy one with all the works

I'm still waiting for my copy of Windows 7 to turn up after paying Acer £12.78 for it.

For the 10th time, all your files will get saved (if you opt to) in a Windows.old folder.
You won't lose anything.

Is there a way to install the upgrade on a PC without Windows? I remember this being possible by entering the CD key of a windows product you own after you install.

Any ideas?

Sweeeeeeet! I'm not currently taking any classes but I still have my university email so I'm gonna take a crack at this. Not sure how they would want to verify that you are an active student.

How does one go about burning this to bootable DVD? I want to run it on me mother's computer instead of my computer and don't have a 4~ GB flash drive.
